  • Do a yearly subscribtion of say 30$ for access

    Votes: 19 8.4%
  • Make all the site sponser's $ go twards the site only

    Votes: 61 27.1%
  • Do a mo. fee of 5$ for access

    Votes: 1 0.4%
  • If I have to pay anything. Snowest can take a hike off a cliff.

    Votes: 144 64.0%

  • Total voters
    225
  • Poll closed .
One impact to think about is the strength of the groups like SAWS and others that help fight the good fight...they wouldn't have near the membership if it wasn't for this 4m. Is it worth cutting them off at the knees to have bit faster connection? I think the membership will drop with any form of mandatory payment.

Alright, I've read enough and voted and only a couple people have expressed in any way how I view the situation so Here's my 2 cents.

If this site goes to a pay site without something more significant to offer besides what's here now, or strictly to support Christopher's new shiny gadgets I'll be gone as will a pile of others.

First, There wasn't the problem with the server overload that we are now seeing before all the shiny object crap was added.

Second, I will agree there were some server related problems, (database error) This is NOT a hardware issue, it's an issue of a bad database be it organization or efficiency of code. Fix it right don't just try to throw more computing power at it. That's like trying to fix pitiful riding by buying a turbo Yamaha.

Third, This sight handled WAY more traffic without slowing to a crawl before these "upgrades" were added.

Fourth, I also understand Harris wanting to "clean up" the site a little but what is being attempted is clean up and numbers expansion. Which possibly could have been handled by the current equipment without the added layers of code recently added.

The whole idea of Bringing Snowest to a whole new level has been the objective. And if it was lowering the quality and adding tons of extra crap to muddle your way through then mission accomplished.

So far I've seen nothing but more confusion, further degradation of the content, More repetative threads of questions that have been answered a thousand times (and it doesn't surprise me as the search function sucks and blows). Most of the most important features asked for by the membership here have been ignored while more crap that very few want, and even less need, is added.

During the off season I spend a lot of time on here just BS'ing or whatever but this time of year most of my time is spent in technical threads giving and recieving good information that we all come here for. That is getting harder to find here and there's less and less of it by the day.

So as it stands would I pay for it? Not a chance.

Yup!

I've given this a fair amount of thought, and my simple answer is NO I will not pay to use this site. Most of my closest friends today have come from people I have met through this site and riding with them. However, this site would not exist if these guys (Snowest/Harris Publishing) were not making money already. If I pay money to use this site, I would expect to have a say in how it runs. I typically only go to the Utah Section anymore, because the excitement, fun and good information seems to have dwindled in other sections. The site used to have a ton of useful information. Although there is still useful information, unfortunately, a lot of the great information was lost a few years ago when the site was changed over to this new format. I see more bashing and brand loyal jargon than useful information now in the other sections. We now have a problem of this place running too slowly. I am hardly ever on here anymore because I don't have the time, and patience, for the "slower than bad dial up" speed. Other forums exist, and they will likely all benefit from Snowest's current problems. However, like previous attempts, they will will not likely take the place of what we have now.

seems to be a theme. Everyone just hangs out in the differnent State areas....I know I do and get good advice there.

Is this due to how areas are modded or that within the area threads people don't get all worked up over some good natured ribbing?

thats pretty much where i hang out too.
i do it cause fouled plug is all jacked up (seriously we have sub forums in the "everything else" section? a little too ironic, dont you think?),
i cant find the performance/mod section,
i still have yet to see the mountain deep powder section.
And I still dont know which section in the arctic cat forums to read...

however, I can find the Utah section easy and its always fun talking with the mafia fools in there! Except when stupid azfarc mod dude came in out of nowhere and decide he was going to moderate the Utah section... that guy needs his privileges revoked...

My vote is for leaving, I already pay a yearly subscription to the SW mags all 3 of them and will no way in h#ll pay for this forum, if the mag subscriptions are suffering than get rid of the printed version and charge to get a virtual version that could be accessed through this site for a fee and if you dont pay you dont get to read the mag but I will never pay just to use this site with no benefits

One side note is that you could charge a very minimal fee say like 1.00 a post in the classifieds to list what you want to sell

Just my opinion but i liked the old forum alot better. Actually the old old forum was the best. Way more info and content.

I think all of these catagories is a bit much. Its a sledding site. Not facebook. The forum breakdown for brand and sled generation is nice.

But the new swap meet is lame as can be. the old one is so much better. I like how you can thumb through the old swap meet in about 2 minutes. the new one takes 2 minutes per section......

I used to really really enjoy snowest.com. I still do but not in the same way. There are some great guys on here. But so many of the people that made this site what it is have gone away due to all the B.S. and rules. As well as all the changes.

Less is more. I myself wouldn't mind a small fee. like 5$ per year. But $60 per year.........yeah right. 99% of the users would go away.

I manage a multi-million dollar livestock operation.... Just exactly how much does it cost to run a website? I would like to know.

As fas as declining magazine revenue.......... compare recent issues of the last 2 years to what was in print 8 year ago and you'll have your answer. Not alot of useful content.... and all adds for whatever product. No more how to or tech info. Just adds about OEM comparisons which get a bit silly at times, and arcticles of blank check builds. Without showing how any of it gets done....

I quit my modstock sub for the same reasons alot of people did. charge to use snowest without any real benefits, i'd bet most would quit their snowest subscription too.

I say if money is the problem..... cut the fat. not add to it. thats at least how my business works.

Just my .02 worthless cents.

I think that it is okay to put a donation jar link within the site, Dune Ratt does this. I do not think that charging for access will be a big hit, as said earlier there's plenty of other free forums to join! $30 year is way too much, and a monthly access fee is a little ridiculous.

This is what I heard too. All I have to say is RIP SNOWEST. YOU WILL FAIL IF YOU CHARGE.... PERIOD.

TO Whom ever else runs this sight besides Chris.... YOUR HEADS GOT WAY TO BIG FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. YOU WILL END THIS SIGHT IF YOU CHARGE. THERE ARE ALOT OF OTHER FORUMS WITH ALOT LESS DRAMA.

SO I BEG YOU HARRIS PUBLISHING.. PLEASE CHARGE FOR THIS SIGHT SO I CAN REMOVE IT FROM MY FAVORITES LIST. I WILL NOT PAY FOR THIS FORUM & ACCORDING TO THE POLL RESULTS ABOUT 70% OF PEOPLE ALSO WILL NOT PAY.

MY FINAL WORDS

RIP SNOWEST

Here is the twist that makes this whole thing completely crazy. They supposedly need new hardware to make this site run properly with all the new bells and whistles. So they are planning to make this a pay site to pay for these hardware upgrades. Which will cause such a cutback in users that it would have run fine on the old hardware.

It would actually make me laugh if Snowest being wasn't destroyed in the process....but sadly anyone who has been on a site that has gone pay already knows the future for Snowest :(

I am an opponent of the paysite and I have made that very clear to the higher ups. It isn't Christopher it is HP.

FYI, the moderation occurring in here was not me.

That would be catwoman.

Would be good to see this place not loose what it has always been but I think it is too Late.

its hard to beleive all of this but with the downhill slide this site has been on for quite some time now, it really doesnt suprise me. i for one also will not pay to be on this forum. i love being on here but its not worth paying for when 75 percent of us are going to a different forum.

the helpful information is no longer here and it seems half the crap on here is just that, CRAP. i was willing to give the new forum a chance but its had its chance and i am not impressed to say the least. i dont know whats wrong with strait forward and right to the point kind of forums.

if this site really is gonna be a paysite now, im sorry to say but il be seing everyone on a different forum

someone have links to the ones that everyones gonna be switching to?
backcountryrebels looks to be a real good one
thanks
