If I can't find an M8, should a go with a M1 instead? Or keep looking?

Hey, as soon as my sled sells I'm going to be buying an 09 M8, if I can find one that is. They are hard to find. I have a line on a few dealers, but they are going fast. If my sled sells before the 28th I need to have an M8 by then, as we have a trip planned. So I don't have much time to keep on looking and waiting for one to surface if they are hard to come by at that time. So I guess my question is, if I can't quickly find an 09 M8, would I regret going with the M1000 instead? There are tons of 09 M1's left sitting at dealers, so finding one is not hard. I ride mostly on the flats, about 1400-3000'. And make a few trips a year to the mountains. I don't need lots of high marking power for where I ride, but power makes it a lot more fun when you don't have hills to boondock on and around. Most of my riding is off trail looking for the deepest snow we can find, and the few hills we do have, we hit up when ever it snows. I know the M8 is the better boondocking sled, and that is what I love to do, but would the M1 be alright as well if I can't find an 800? I have been hearing and reading some stuff about belt issues, how bad are they? I can't afford a belt every other ride. Any opinions?

Thanks :beer;

M1000 is a little heavier, but feels even more heavy when ridding it. The motor pulls like a tractor though awesome torque. How big are you? If your a big guy it shouldn't bother you any.

I gotta say I love my m1000, first had a 08' now have a 09 with a pgt and at 5 pounds its insane! I have ridden both the m8 and m1 and I cant notice a difference in weight. I think in 09 on the sno pro it was like 15 pounds (not positive) equivalent to a half tank of fuel. You do notice a little vibration at idle but the other thing you notice is the way it climbs like a crack smokin billy goat on steroids! You cant go wrong with either both awesome but there is a little more potential in the m1000. IMHO:beer;:D

I'd get the 1000, esp if it is a 09. I don't quite understand the heavier thing, the couple different ones I rode felt very nimble and light, lighter than my 09 XP. I have 1000 turbo now, just dont have any time on it.

Manx is right. The M1000 feels nimble and light compared to my 09 XP. It has badass power stock and its a pipe, can , Y-pipe and controller away from 190 HP....

190 on a stocker with bolt ons?

I have a buddies new 09' M1000 in the garage. It rips. It has arm stretching tourque and turns way better than my XP....It dosent feel heavy at all. It feels.....Badass!! We ride every weekend and the thing climbs, carves, slices and dices amazingly.

Buddy put the 2010 seat and a can on the thing and its comfy looks cool and that one liter beast really hauls the mail. My Buddy sits down on this sled and climbs stuff at 10,000-11,000 feet that would amaze ya'.

This sled has more power than my 09' XP with a billet high comp head, can, jetting....The only advantage I may even have over the beast is my clutching. Soon as he bolts on that pipe combo and a PC box? Its all over but the shouting as the M1000 simply puts out stoooidly usable amounts of HP.

I like the M1000.....Lots of big HP potential and the motor runs like its not on the ragged edge like the 800's.

He gave $8500 bucks for that new leftover 09'. For the power and handling that thing has? I cant imagine a 144HP 800 even being in the game with that 162HP monster off the showroom floor.

I say keep looking.

Why is that? Care to explain a bit farther as to why?

Awesome thanks. Lots of good info in there.

A bit I hear yeah, I would be putting a Y pipe and can for sure, maybe full pipe, so that would pretty much put it in the same range as the M8. I'm 170, about 190 geared up ready to ride.

Same range as an M8?

Dude a piped up M1000 will make 180HP+!!

An M1000 with simple bolt on stuff will absolutely stretch yer' arms out and is in turbo sled power territory.

Those M1000 guys are making huge amounts of legit power with bolt on goodies! Not in the same range as the 800....

2009 M8 465 lbs ~140 hp.
add Y, intake & can (about $600 total)
Now M8 is 454 lbs & maybe 145 hp.

2009 M1000 490 lbs ~160 hp
add y, intake, can.
now M1000 is 470 & 182 hp (15-17 lbs heavier & has the hp to get the front off the ground)

You cant get even the new 2010 M8's up in the 180 range short of adding the turbo.

The M1000's are badassness IMO. I'm the proud half owner of one until my buddy pays me off....By the time that thing is piped and ripe I may not want my money back!!

haha man you shouldn't do this. Your making me want a 1000! lol What I ment by in the same range was weight wise. Is would get the weight of the 1000 pretty close to that of the M8. I love HP! But I also LOVE being able to jump on day in and day out, and not worry about reliability. Yes I don't mind mind tuning, but I want to ride! Not sit in the shop trying to make it run right. That's the only thing keeping me from a 1000 right now. Are they a reliable as the 800? All the topics I see about a sled burned down around here is a 1000. But also pretty modded ones I guess.

100 hard straight up miles through rocks, sticks and poor snow...."Our" M1000's belt is like new and its a beast.

It just pulls so much harder than my XP 800....And my XP isnt stock!!

By the time the M1K is piped? It will be end game unless I turbo my XP. Me and my buddy are fat. We both weight 230+....Comparitively? We need big man sleds to match up in our larger scaled universe?:beer;

Big power aint a crime....:face-icon-small-dis

burn downs are from modds. the 09 stock with just a slp can is an awesome machine. If you put a full pipe on get the slp with PCIII and its pull and go the egts are just in case. the closest you can get the m1000 to a m8 in weight is 15lbs, the motor is that beefier. After pipe you may want to add motor mounts. But an m8 wont touch the m1000. I have beat turbos that trenched to much and cutler 1000's. The 09 chassis is nimble no matter what you get. the 162 feels shorter than previous 153's. If you can feel 15lbs out of 480 ish lbs. your whining. The suspension setup plays the biggest roll in how it feels. Personally it feel lighter when climbing the steep and its trying to come over backwards, never had a m8 less a turbo do that.

m1000+pipe=airbox and the right tuning, more like pushing 200hp.

I would never buy another 8 without a turbo.

You can get over 180 hp without even puttign a pipe on an M1000, and then look at the difference in torque.

Look at the thread about taking weight off the M1000, this weight is easy to pull & cheaper than adding HP to the 8.

I've had a few of each in different track lengths along with a 8 turbo now & the 8 is a great sled, but it needs a turbo.

Lol...I posted the 180 just being Uber Frugal...We were told by Vohk 195HP is possible with the speedwerx stuff, Pipe, can D&D Y pipe with a PC controller.

Thats a hard number for me to fathom or post here as my buddies M1000 is bone stock sans the can....

195HP? Staggering power from a sled with bolt on pieces.

I have both 09's and the m-8 waits in the trailer while the 1000 is on the hill.

Last year I put 780 miles on my 1000, first belt wore out at 480 miles, second is still on the machine.

You can talk hp all day long, but the TORQUE is where the 1000 keeps on climbing.

Even more really good info. :) Thanks guys. The 09 m8 is out there, you just have to look, and travel to find one. I started this topic with the intention of finding out if the M1000 was an ok second choice if I couldn't find an M8 in time, before our trip on the 28th. But you guys ended up selling me on the 1000 instead. :) I'm not surw what mods I'll end up all doing, but for this year I think it'll only be seat. Over the second half of winter I might start modding, since I won't be able to ride anyway. But for right now I want to get it in my garage and ride it stock for a while. But first I need to sell my D8. All we need to know is if the guy can get the money, lets hope so, and soon. I want to go get my M. Before I run out of time before christmas....

Just to let you know
RTK is claiming 225+hp out of a ported SW piped M1000. you want something that runs on the flat and I think its around the $2000 Dollar range, said and done. I've heard slp is working on a 215hp ported option that is plug and go on pump gas.

Get the M8. M1000 will wear you out alot more......mostly from having to hang on twice as hard!!:D
I've rode both and the 8 was a touch easier to throw up on it's side, but it was a 153 and my M1, 162 didn't have a handlebar riser. That said, the 8 was easier to ride because you didn't have to hang on as tight, seriously.
So it comes down can you hang onto a bunch more hp for less $$ or do you want the sled that won't pull your arms off?
I'd opt for the 1000.
Min'es got a slp pipe, cpc head, intake and fuel box and the power is niiiice. About 900 mi, on second belt about 200mi ago. Hasn't blown a belt, runs great, easy to pull weight off of. The M8 felt just as heavy to dig out when it was stuck! No reason to think it won't be a reliable sled for quite a few more miles.
