IDAHO: Island Park/West Yellowstone 2010/11 Snow Reports

Just a couple snapshots from yesterday's ride.

Island Park, just outside of the Big Springs Parking Lot.
The fields were untracked before we arrived.
12-18 inches of fresh powder on the meadows.

Rode Big Springs to Black Canyon to Black Bear yesterday. No grooming yet so the trails are a nightmare, solid moguls mostly on a slant because the moguls are mostly caused by drifts. Lots of snow, especially for a Thanksgiving ride, but there are still plenty of landmines. When we got up to the point on Black Bear where the boudary is for Y.N.P. there was probably 6 feet of snow, give or take. Pretty much bottomless but deep enough to climb those short hills. It did start snowing hard as we were leaving and it should be great in the next few weeks, especially once the groomers get out.

That is pretty much exactly what I saw up there on Saturday.
More than enough snow to have a BLAST up on top with.

I THINK grooming begins on December 1st ??

Once past the gate, the snow was UNTRACKED so the drifts were just pure fun to go through.
 
Looks like we have lost 13 inches on the top since the last big dump. Should have a nice solid base forming now.

As of 7 AM--Nov. 30, 2010:
We have received a Trace of new snow in the last 24 hrs. and we have 4-5 feet of pack above 9,000'. Some slabs still exist.

MODERATE avalanche hazard is expected today.

I don't understand, but I am NOT complaining.

The weather was great.

The snow was great.

The access trails had all been groomed.

And Island Park was DESERTED AGAIN this weekend?


WHAT GIVES?

We rode from Noon till 6:00pm, and pretty much had the whole place to ourself.

We saw perhaps 6 sleds the whole day out.

Either way, me two sons and I had a simply terrific time sledding today!!!

Save us some. We have reservations for New Years, we're hoping there is something fresh when get there. We've never rode there before, looks like we picked a good year.

Don't worry....we have 20 of us going up next weekend......We will have all of it tracked up by Saturday night.:face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-hap

Hey Chris,

I remember you from last year. I too am from Rigby and rode a nitro the last 3 years. I'm on the pro this year. I ride mostly in Island Park. Injured right now but have 3 rides in. should be good in a week or two. Where are your pics from?

God Gave Us SNOW to be TRACKED.

And once we have tracked it all down, he gives us MORE!!

Hello everyone! so I take it that there's decent sledding in Island park now? and is the groomers running for the wife and kids?
 
When we rode on Saturday, the groomer had been down the trail in the last 24 hours.

We spent the day up in the Big Springs area, and there was AMPLE snow everywhere.
 
As of 7 AM--Dec. 6, 2010:
