i was insulted at a dealer today

they managed to lose one of my brand new MX bikes when i was having it serviced, and by lose i mean it was stolen off there lot. oh and one thing they forgot to mention was they don't have lot insurance.

I know of a yamaha dealer about 700km from my house that last year had an 2006 apex stolen from their storage shed. They were servicing the machine and instead of keeping it in the main garage they put it into the storage shed overnight and it was stolen. They had to replace the guys 2006 apex, his 2006 had 9500km on it, he ended up with a brand new 2009 Apex.

Looks to me like the dealer made a pretty fair offer, and was trying to get you into a new sled.

That snopro m8 cost the dealer $10600, and the dealer has to pay that sled off when it leaves his store.
You give dealer $6500 cash and a snowmobile. The dealer needs to come up with $5100 out of his own pocket right now, so he is in the hole on the entire deal. After dealer goes over entire snowmobile, cleans it up, replaces anything that is worn he has to sell it for $5100 to break even on a sled that you are now out riding.

You can pick up a brand new 08 m1k for $7500, and the market is saturated with them. How much do you think your 08 m1k is worth? How much money do you think the dealer should make considering he put $5100 out of his own pocket, plus the original $10600 risk to have the sled avail for you.

Unfortunately the market is saturated with 07-08 M1000 sleds, Brand new for $6800-7500.00 Remember your sleds are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them, and although they may be worth more to you the market dictates pricing, and right now inventories are very high with certain carry-over sleds.

It sounds like his price for the M1K was pretty fair, but if your not happy with it you will probably have to try an unload it privately. I always expect the dealer to offer a little less, because you are sort of paying a convenience fee on trading it in to have him/her sell it for you.

You got to love the sport of snowmobiling...oh wait I meant you got to be crazy to love the sport...these days. You get hosed when you buy it and you get hosed every year on where you can ride it.

Certainly sux!
However i did the same, I found a dealer in Camrose, Camrose Farm equipment, they blow there machines out for good prices, so I financed one paying as little as I could and sold my sled on Ebay! then dropped the monies on the loan.
I live around Edmonton and for me I have not brought a sled back for warranty issues in many years, if they need attention, I do it myself!
Been riding Cat since my new 2004 King Cat, one thing I have learned, I would NEVER EVER snow check a sled again, wait a few months and get a smokin deal on the new model when they are blowin them out.

today i went to beverlodge alb to trade in my 08 m10 , with low ks, never been sat on seat, never been used hood and they offered me a whopping 5800 dollars, and 3000 for my supposedly well used 06 m7. i told them i would be a repeat client caus i buy lots of sled, i have 3 ms in my shop, they r f****d in the head. they wanted 6500 difference for a new m8 pro. i told them i will sell privately and i will drive to great lengths to get one. they told me that the 8s were a hot item and no deals, so i told them i will remember that and in a no snow year or slow economy they will have to beg riders to buy thier chit, these guys r not riders just car salesman's and dont no chit. he asked me if there was diesel in my 7 cause it smoked when it started up,duh i hope dealerships like this go belly up , than included in the price they wanted 199 for document fees, thats crap, u dont pay that fee on toys, just another money grab. any dealers reading this remember, its our money that keeps u guys going if ur selling for full retail we expect full retail trade value, for me ive lost aprox 8000$ in 2 yrs thats crazy. i wish i wasnt such a hard core cat guy cause all the dealers around here suck, and the pol dealership is awsome just chitty sled

If you think the dealer insulted you with a $5800 offer, just wait until you try to sell it privately. His offer is going to start to look very good after you waste the next two months trying to get what you think it is worth. That is a $6000 sled all day long on the open market.

Go back, eat some crow, take his offer, get the sled you want. Life is way to short to let your ego rule.

well i am gonna sell privately , i was just hoping to get a new one faster by trading but im not desperate,or stupid, and i will deal very hard when i buy my new ride, even if i have to drive a 1000k for it. dealer support is non existing and cat dont stand by thier product as we can see with all the dd failures so im gonna shop and when she breaks ill fix er my self. back in the good ole days the dealers were riders not now thier just sales people that dont know anything other than than the color and it has a track and engine

What DD failures? Everybody has different experiences but I can count the number I've seen on one hand since they were introduced(discounting the ones that were flat out neglected or abused). Sleds are like, ahem, women. Sooner or later their going to give you trouble.

Alot of you guys that think this is the going price are from the States and have to remember the we pay alot more for sleds here. I dont know what its really worth but i know you wont find a new 08 1000 in canada for 7000 more like 10,000. new were paying close to 14,000 for a new m8.

That is exactly right....

This is the best time to buy a sled, worst time sell one... my buddy picked up a used '07 M1k for $4500... the industry as well as the private sellers are in a real hurt locker right now...

I just sold an '06 YZ250F dirtbike for $1300 below book, $200 below trade in value... it all comes down to how long you want to sit on your machine.

Eat the bullet and get what you can out of your sled or ride it.

Laws are probably different in Canada , and even in the US they try to skirt around it , but, if a dealer has your vehicle - it is under their custody, care, and responsibility. They can post signs all they want about not being responsible , but at least in WA state I learned they are. We had all of our electronics stolen out of our toyhauler while on their lot and the legal begels got involved and made them replace everything as the dealers first stance was sorry - too bad. We said think again.

one place i can tell you not to deal with unless you have to is north gate Honda in Grande Prairie which deals acrctic cat as well. they managed to lose one of my brand new MX bikes when i was having it serviced, and by lose i mean it was stolen off there lot. oh and one thing they forgot to mention was they don't have lot insurance.

m trade in in canada

I would call Howies Marine in Prince George BC........ask for Scott and see what he says he has been really increasing his sales and is giving good coin for trades....wouldnt hurt

hey snobyrd...

those guys at Hans%n's are effin goofs. i know i worked for them...in GP. they do not know a thing about sleds. and you are bang on about them being car salesmen....thats what they are. BUT they were square on their pricing. my best buddy is part owners @ the dealer in GP. i also worked there too. 08 M10' BRAND NEW...i repeat BRAND NEW...$9500.00 right now. OTD. go see for yourself. the one poster on here was absolutely correct. they have to try and sell your used (no matter what condition) 08 M10 for at least $6500 to make ANY money on it. that is going to be a hard feat...especially when they have a fleet of 08 and 09's sitting in the yard paying interest on them.
sleds are worthless in everyway! they are only worth something to the owner. it sucks...sucks hard core. we pay 14G's for something and its literally worth HALF the following year! but its the price we have to pay to feed our crave of the next pow filled day.

go see Brent at Northgate. you WILL get better treatment AND their head mechanic Ryan is GREAT. they have had alot of ****ty guys in the past but the last 2 years for them they have made some big changes in service. people can bash all they want and people will always have an opinion BUT things HAVE changed there. they have 2 awesome techs now. HUGE difference over the past in the sled/atv department. Pete and Ryan know their ****...and CARE. they are cutler turbo guys now too. take your money there instead of Hans%ns. they dont know ****, and they dont CARE.

you WILL get more selling your M10 privately...sucks you have to wait tho.

good luck man!

ps..

where do you ride mostly??

m7

Hey snobyrd, send me the details of your M7. I might be interested.

I cant stress not dealing with Northgate enough it was only a little over a year ago that they lost my bike and held no liability for it. they even had a bogus work order form that said they aren't liable for theft in super fine print AND every other dealership i talked to said there lot was insured. i have circulated the store afterward when i needed parts and most of the employees are still complete jokes. you might get reasonable prices there but when the **** hits the fan they are in no way there to help you.

i know for a FACT other dealers do not have insurance (worked for 2 other dealers besides NG) they didnt lose your bike. it got STOLEN, along with a bunch of other atv's and such. you need to know the FACTS before slandering. when you get work done to your vehicle at MANY dealers and it is vandalized or stolen throughout the night they WILL NOT cover your costs OR buy you a new vehicle. YOUR insurance will. do you know how much insurance is for dealerships on just their stuff?? it would boggle your mind.
about the staff....no comment. they have good and they have bad. just like EVERY other dealership.
too many fraud claims have been put forth spiking their insurances. are they to do a complete vehicle inspection before AND after doin a service?? people were doin to much of the, "that wasnt there when i brought it here" this is fact. ive worked for 6 different dealerships through out Canada and its the same EVERYWHERE.

like i stated b4. everyone has a story about a dealer where they had a unpleasant encounter. and i seriously feel bad that your stuff got stolen (i hate thieves soooo much) is NG the BEST dealership....not by a long shot. BUT they have done some MAJOR changes in the last 2 years. especially in the most important area's....SERVICE. no longer does the service manager work there that you know of. 2 GREAT mechanics now for recreation. it takes time to change but they are on the right path.
hey, go deal with han%en.....you'll be VERY unhappy. i know the owner there too. not going there......:beer;

If the dealer doesn't run insurance they are fools, the dealer I worked at had insurance... we had 70k worth of machines stolen in one night, insurance covered our new stuff aswell as the customers...

It is damn expensive to run insurance on a dealer.... damnnnn expensive... but its worth it.

Since the exchange rate is essentially a wash right now, if I were you, I would be making a road trip:) I know I could drive a looooong way to save $3000.:beer;

I read the ads just about everyday on SnoWest. There are screaming deals on sleds out there. Then there are those like the OP who are PO'ed their sled dropped in value and those overpriced ads run for months, just take a look.

The $5800 trade offer was darn good money IMO.

Dont feel bad, Ive got a 17k 06 900 Rmk I couldnt sell for 4grand. It sucks I know, as someone stated Ill never snowcheck another machine.

If they don't have to be responsible why have fences??? If the unit is in there possesion, they are responsible. If they choose to not have insurance, that doesn't skirt the issue.
