bought a new work truck today. 2008 Ford F250 Kingranch 4 door Short box diesel. She's nice :) Gets horrible fuel mileage but oh well, thank god for petro pass.

I don't mean to rag on your truck, but we've been getting quite a bit of those new 08 SuperDuty's in as work trucks.... the guys basically said they get worse miledge than any other truck they've ever driven :(

Like, I've been hearing 9 MPG average and stuff ...

What are you getting?

its only got 12 miles on it :o But I was told straight up from my dealer that 10-12mpg would be the norm. Thats okay with me, its not my personal and im not buying the gas, and I wont tow much with it. Just sort of a PR work truck.

So I guess ive burnt my first gallon of diesel in it hehehehehehe

I hope they get better as they break in. I drove one home for a guy from location yesterday ... those are DAMN nice trucks, and this was just the XLT package. I just hope the 6.4 turns out to be better than the 6.0 was.

I want one for a personal truck purrrrdy bad but there is no way in hell im dishing out $4.38 a gallon of diesel out of my pocket  Dealers are giving them away though so it makes it tempting. I want a Dmax, 03-07, but the 12 miles on my worker is gettin to me :o

As for this thread.......I would rather ride a pink crotch rocket than a Prius. Little cars do NO good out here

If I'd have known it was gonna be like this this summer I wouldn't have bought that 2500HD last november :(

I'd have probably saved $5k :(

I believe the real safety hazard with hybrids, is the same thing that happens when you lay a screwdriver across a battery. You get burned by hot molten steel. It splatters and vaporizes. Take all the batteries in a hybrid, and even the high carbon steel of the jaws of life, will explode. Probably blind you.

As for the Tesla, I believe it uses Lithium Ion batteries, Do a search on youtube, and see what happens when you rupture a Lipo battery. That's why each battery is in a steel tube.

Aren't you guys old enough to remember old cars like the Chevettes (sp). Some of those cars got 50 miles to the gallon with gas, and not carrying a ton of batteries and electric motors. Hybrids a neat technology, but they aren't an economical solution to the problem. They will help someday.

The Tesla stores 53 kW-hrs of energy. That means it would take about $4 worth of power to charge. Or 11 hours at 120 volts / 40 amps. And, that's suppose to take you 200 miles. Or put another way, one of those big windmills could charge 680 cars a day. Or, a 100MW coal fired powerplant could charge 45,000 cars a day. Yha, it's gonna take a lot of new powerplants and transmission lines.

I'll give you a little credit in your ability to hold a debate on political issues as it does seem you have a little knowledge about world and social events... even though your point of view is in the definate minority on here..... Credit due for the effort.
Lineman tools? whatever dude. We are talking about batteries here... worst case scenario is fire, but good luck with the electrocution argument.

Not to allign myself with Ruffy, the hippie, but the electric hybrids of the future will be using Super Capacitors....you ever touched a capacitor that is not "super"...hurts like hell.

1980 diesel Rabbit got 50mpg too. It's nothing new...-again, there is talk of the future hybrids running on diesel instead of gas...diesel is more effiecent for the application. Also there are buses runnign now that are pimping highly efficient diesel/electric mixes and they have cut emissions 90 percent and raised efficency 60 percent:eek:

Yah, series hybrid, kind of like trains. I heard that they brake electrically too? I was really surprised to hear that, but I guess they weigh so much that mechanical brakes wouldn't work?

Funny how advanced the big machines really are as compared to the smaller stuff.

The cars of the near future are gonna sport electric brakes and the entire drive system will be as well. The only reason to have the damn gas/diesel motor is gonna be to produce electricity. Dude you need to read that book, it's great after the 3rd chapter or so.

Think about it ... You all know those 90,250,320-ton mining trucks with tires that are like 4 feet wide and 12 feet tall? .... Those technically are hybrids. They're diesel-electric .... they have diesel motors generating electricity and then wheels are driven by electric motors-I forgot to mention this in my post on buses, they are using it in trucks as well. Good job meat.

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken the electrical braking effect comes either reducing current through the magnets on the motors or alternating it in a different direction so as to produce electromotive force in the opposite direction hence braking..-don't forget that the braking is used to charge the batteries, hence the Super capacitor to fully utilize that...

What I dont get is this

People say how their prius gets 45- 50 mpg, that is in town.'

No for me, and aout 80% of the country who works typically commutes on a highway at speeds in excess of 70mph. These hybrids are hardly breaking 30 mpg.

Jetta TDI gets 45+ all the time

Handa civic non hybrid I think gets 35 or so

Heck, my 99 grand prix with 230k miles with a 3.8 gets 27 to 30 combined city/ highway

I am all about putting a couple bucks in my pocket, but what is the realistic way to go, good MPG on teh highway or good MPG on a city street going 30 mph?

i had an old chevette for my first car!!!! 81 four door hatch back!!!!! great car, it took a beating and kept going!!!!!!!!!!! mileage was AWESOME too, not sure opf the exact, but i wasputting about 700 km on a pretty small tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Model A with a flathead four cylinder with a single barrel carb gets better gas mileage than the majority of vehicles made today. These hybrids are a joke, You will wear the car out trying to get enough miles to just break even on their price. The technology to get good fuel economy has been around for years, it seems that engineers try to complicate things to make technology look better than it really is.
