Hyak avalanche/landslide

HOLY POOP!! And that's just the obvious slide, what about all the hills we ride up high and over east?? WOW......I imagine there will at least be some huge washouts that make last years look small, be careful next time out, our riding areas might be missing some pieces!!!

Missed my friends cabin, we were just there having drinks after riding Gold Creek Sunday.

He was just told by his neighbors that the ski resort is now closed for the year...

exreme danger today

Extreme things happen on extreme danger days. good thing the ski area was closed. Just a little steeper and these things happen on considerable and high rated days. Looks like the avy danger should drop a little during the next week but even moderate and considerable danger levels need to have caution exercised. Get avalanche training if you havent already.

The NWAC had predicted things like this. Read the avy reports daily for the area you ride.

ERE Extreme Runoff Event. I remember the 03/04 season where we would get big 4 ft dumps only too melt in a day, a couple of days after it fell. Leaving deep trenches at water crossings. Or the 04/05 season where it didn't really snow till March and April. Each year has its own way. So far it all seem to come in December and faster than normal. Way faster and colder. So far my only riding was from the house. Hows that for your first ride of the year. Awaiting Mods and way more rides.

and some people still want to go riding after this.this happened on a ski resort hill.to go riding in the backcountry now is insane.I am related to one that would go,yes he is a jacka$$.

One of our nieghbors was walking with several others in the lower community yesterday when it happened. It's almost more of a land slide then an avalanche. They said that the snow started moving then rapidly liquified into mud soup. Current working theory is that there was a lot of water moving under the snow pack which undermined the limited bond. That slope gets manicured from year to year so there aren't a lot of natural anchors to hold things in place.

The guy who owned the house that was totaled was apparently inside enjoying a cup of coffee when it happened. He's OK.

It's raining up here again.
The next week isn't looking good.

DOT Flickr page has some good images of what's going on up here...

It's alost a start over! Time to head north....

Looking at it yesterday it did look like more of a landslide triggered avalanche. It looked to me like there was a large crater gone right up where the break was, alot of water underground with how much it was raining prob couldn't drain fast enough..........Like a big Zit on the hill side, could only hold so long before it burst. Like pass rev said, there is not much more than small brush anchored in the hill.

I can confirm that beer was involved...
More then just a little.

Went to take a closer look at the carnage today.
FACK! The pictures on line just don't do it justice.

I also overheard an old timer was also checking things out say that the original owners of the area had filled that part of the hill in with stumps and fill in order to make the terrain more appealing to skiers. It's a nice terrain feature now, pretty much a ravine. Interestingly, the road that switch backs up in that area was not washed out.

Snowing up on the pass at the moment.

Seeing as Hyak is closed for the rest of the season---Maybe we could do a hill climb there?? Have a gated course and time for each class. Sounds like a new natural obsticial for part of the course.

Who knows who to contact??
