Hunting Rifle for an 11 year old

I was thinking of a Browning lever action .243. When he outgrows it I can have a varmit gun. What say Ye? Anybody have one they wouldn't mind getting rid of?

Steve

I think your on the right track with the 243 But i would look at a bolt gun like the remington 700. great varmint and deer guns. 70 grain ballistic tips with varget powder for deer and antelope :beer;

the blr is a nice rifle, but I would have to advise against it. you are gonna have to cut the stock down.....they are not easy to find as would be a 70, or 700 stock. there is a bit more to fiddle with on a blr then a bolt gun. they are not as light as a bolt gun.

if you really want to get him a blr, wait till you will not have to chop it up, they are an awful nice gun to hack on...on the other hand, there is a good chance if you asked for a beater stock on the 24hrcampfire I bet someone will give you one.

my $.02

good on ya for getting the young ones out though:beer;

thats exact caliber i was thinking when i read your thread title. i will be geting my boy a bar 243

My dad bought me a used .308 when I was that age and it was a great gun(still have it). Got a soft recoil pad and shot 165 gr. at the range. Used 180 gr. for hunting and got a moose with it the next year at 12.

I have a Ruger MK11, ultra compact, 243 with handloads with 95 grain Nosler Partitions for my kids. My three boys have used it and my girlfriends daughter used it and it is a great rifle. It has taken quite a number of animals over the years.

That was my first gun when I was 12, I didn't need the stock cut down, the 243 and 308 are smaller than the 270 or 7mm in the blr, I think it should be fine.

Thanks guys, he's pretty tall and athletic so hopefully he could handle a heavier gun. He might be 2" taller by October also. To me the lever action seems more comfortable. I'ld like him to start with the open sights too.

my boy is usin my 223 and loves shootin my 25-06, i am goin to have get his deer with the old 30-30, family tradition, of course he's 5'8 125lbs with a size 11 mens shoe and he's 12:eek:

At 12 I bought my son a left handed 7mm, shortened the stock and had it ported, kicks like a .243. He's now 16 and has trained himself to be more comfortable shooting right handed instead of left (frigen paintball) so I'll be looking for another 7 for him this fall.

I got my son a remington model 7(youth rifle) in .308 for X-mas when he was 10...planned on taking it right to wild west guns and having a brake installed...but he wanted to shoot it first...7 yrs later he still shoots it without a brake..(personally I dont like shooting it since it is both very short stocked and a light rifle for cartridge size)but he has never once complained about it....

my 8yr old shoot a break action 243, perfect for him, but he'll need something a bit bigger down the road a couple year... the youth model Remington 700 sps should be the ticket... maybe I'll move him to a 260-270 Model Seven short action rifle... either should fill the bill nicely...

I got a 270 in remington model 710 for my boys. the 710 is an economical model. no adjustable trigger of the 700 and comes from the factory with scope mounted as a package deal.

They are not big and could handle it fine. It is a great gun.

That is exactly what I was thinking. You are so smart AJ. ;) :beer;

I started with a 7mm when I was that age. Love that gun still, but a .243 would be awesome too.

Take him to the gun range and see what he likes if you can get your hands on a couple to borrow for the evening.

I had the choice between the 7 and .243 and ended going with the 7mm. Let him see which he likes to shoot better.

Ha ha nope just shook the little black ball and that's what it said :D I still have my very first deer rifle. It was a winchester model 670 243. a great gun I also have a 700 varmit 243 . Its just a very versatile caliber. 58 vmaxs for rock chucks any coyotes. Might get flamed for this but with the right bullet I wouldn't be afraid to take it out after an elk

I would not either. I would just be more careful on choosing and taking the shot. However, I am one of those folks that don't subscribe to the ultra mag newsletters. It is fine if you are going to Alaska or Africa, but I am not always a supporter of "the bigger the better" philosophy.

As a disclaimer, I use a 30-06 for all my big game hunting. And if possible, I usually aim for the head on deer so I don't make too big of a mess of the meat.
