How much turbo lag should I have?

I just bought a 2007 Phazer with a rear mount MCX turbo. A side note this had been sitting a very long time. Ran better as the day went on but if I let off and pin the throttle it take a full two to three seconds for turbo to spin up and a full five seconds to full boost. Is this normal?

Thanks!

You have a leak some where my guess is the exhaust

My nytro did the same thing and it had a bad exhaust leak.

Sounds like a boost leak either hot or cold side. I would pressure test the system, and check for leaks. No way it should take that long to build boost.

i just got a apex with the mcx kit, and i didnt know, but basically guy told me the exhaust rattle was a heat shield, i say well ok...., so anyways when i went cruising down the trail it was not terrible lag or anything by any means, wack throttle, about 2-3 secs until wot, but it also had a boost leak at the actuator since it had a Y there and a switch to control boost, the switch line broke off....

so anyways, if i let sled sit for 5 mins, engine still warm but everything else cools off, fire it up, let idle 10 15 secs, go 50 ft, try to climb a hill turbo lagg would be weird and like 5+ seconds

so thats weird.... well last sat i went out, and tried to run at a hill and i lost all power, wouldnt make more than 3 pounds boost or so, if that... so a buddy says, put your hand over your exhaust... yep it would run NORMAL with hand over the exhaust... so huge leak!

i tore it down, found out the rattle was due to a clamp on 1 of the bellows being so loose it may as well not been there, then another cylinder it was loose, spinning around... another cylinder it was tighter.... but still had flex in the pipe, and the last cylinder it was tight and good!

so all clamps off, cylinders 1,2 blew the donuts out, there was nothing left, the flexing wore off the lead and wore out the weaved stainless steel and blew it out, 3 was getting there, it still had a fair bit of its stainless steel.. enough to seal so i left it, cyl 4... donut was good! because clamp was tight

soo, managed to get my hands on 2 good used donuts from a parts sled, put those in, i ground down the stops on all 4 clamps, tightened it up until there was 0 flex on the pipes,

fix'd my Y pipe gasket too... clamp was loose there... and clamp flipped down, track wacked it and threw it back, and gasket blew out....

SO all of that fix'd..... atleast good enough to get me by this winter, i go out on this previous sunday and turbo lagg was extremely little... if i cruise down the trail, wack the throttle from say 1/6th to 3/4 the you can hear and feel the turbo/boost follow you as you increase throttle withn that second.... so boost is now RIGHT THERE!

LONG STORY SHORT... put hand over exhaust with sled idling and see if it wants to die or if it keeps idling... if dies, no exhaust leaks.... if idles fine... big exhaust leak
