how many areas around west are avy prone. ive heard skyline ridge, and lions head, and i'v seen a major slide up by bald peak. yes i am a flatlander and like to get as much info as i can. PS i know avy can happen any where with the right condition and i am going to take a course this fall

Here in Utah we had slides on hill that have never slid. We always hit a few bunny hill with a steep crest or cornice, something that should slide. If it doesnt break we go bigger than bigger etc. Just be careful.

that is some crazy bad advice on how to test conditions

....X2....Best thing to do, IF you are serious about this, (and every mountain rider should be), is to take a class. Kudos for you to take one in the fall. If you want to quench your desire for the knowledge now, read an avy book. Any titles by Bruce Tremper, Doug Fesler, or Jill Fredston will give you the basics, and scare the crap out of you! Read the books now, and before your class, and before every season, and you will be headed in the right direction.

One good way to find out about avy danger is to visit the avalanche forcasting sites, here in utah they have previous seasons slides and where, also injuries, deaths etc. Also a lot of good information about what generates slides and the rationale that goes into the avy forecast. Don't know if other states have this extensive of info but I bet they have something.

avalanche.org will take you to these places

X10 on Diz's comment!!!! ANYWHERE in the west is avy prone........that is thinking about it in the wrong way.....it shouldn't be what is prone, that leads you into a false sense of security. take a class. visit the avy forecast sights. FOR SURE!.....but that doesn't guarantee you of safety. you should assume it will, and act accordingly.
