Your sister did it right by having the INITIATIVE to make her life better. She worked at it and over came it. A fairly large portion of assistance people get just puts them in a downward spiral of not having the initiative to do anything to make their conditions better. It should be a hand up when you are down NOT a lifestyle!! I have talked topeople that have moved to Michigan because their benefits were higher here compared to where they lived before. Word spreads on how to manipulate the system for all you can get. No personnel pride.

This, a hand up not a hand out. Period.

it's funny to me how blind people really are. Does anybody care about what Hilary did? Why they have been investigating her? All I will say is this is and will be the best and most welcome change in history of politics. It is time to "make America great again."

yep they sure are they elected a person who's lawyers are their way to court at the end of this month because their client is accused of racketeering. Now that he is President elect I am sure he will just have to judge deported even though the judge was born in this country. With one little word that was planted at the beginning of the campaign "crooked" he was able steer people away from his own dirty hands. Much like a draft dodger made himself look like a war hero and a war veteran a villain in a past election. Politics is such a great profession what other profession can you use the media to project your short comings onto your opponent and get a way with it.

What's done is done .
I don't see anything good coming from reminding the losers how flawed their candidate is .
We won, America won, it's time to help our new President move our country forward and start undoing the mess created in the past 8years.

Losers protesting serves no purpose, nor does over-zealous celebration from the winning side.

All statistics show the majority of those on government assistance are on it short term. It's a small minority that abuse the system and are there for years.

The "welfare queen" is largely a myth.

I'm not saying all are long term. I am saying that a portion will take the system for every little bit they can get using every little thing to their benefit with little effort to change things until they are limited out on it.

From north of the border seems that both Trump & Hillary are much alike - both part of the "establishment" that they both profess to want to change. Hillary is just an "old white male WASP" masqerading as a woman while Trump is a boorish lout masquerading as a businessman (how many times has he declared bankruptcy anyway). By all appearances it seems that both attempted to buy their way to the WH.

Sad to see that these two were the best your great country could put forth as I know that there are many great, honest, caring, intelligent and hard working folks south of the border any of whom would likely prove to be better candidates.

The writing was on the wall when your Supreme Court quashed the spending limits on campaigning ... the establishment is ever more firmly entrenched thanks to that bright move ....

We wish you all the all and in all likelihood, Trump will not be as great as some had hope nor as bad as many think.

Public housing in Colorado is FULL of full timers. My wife has worked in that industry for over 15 years. She currently is a compliance auditor for the low income housing programs. She previously managed over 1000 units in five states.

The statistics are being misrepresented. I have met dozens of 20 year plus veterans of public assistance myself. I would bet 50% of them have been there 5 years or more, which in my estimation is way more than a hand up.

Military welfare has to end too, lots of things do from both sides of the ailse. Hopefully this new perspective moves us to a much better place than I saw us heading.

I find it interesting that when a billionaire or corporation avoids taxes, uses loopholes, or takes handouts from the government (subsidies, tax breaks, etc) it's just good business, but a family receiving barely enough to get by are worthless leeches on society.

Think how much someone like trump costs the government with all of his lawsuits, tax audits, various legal preceedings, inspections, security, government oversight, etc. while likely paying nothing in income tax. I'm betting he costs the government more than the average family on welfare.

Corporations employ people which adds to the tax base.

I don't agree that the welfare queen is a myth. I'm a pharmacist and see the same welfare queens every month for the past 10 years.

You know what kills me and my hourly associates in the pharmacy? They bitch about their $1 medicaid copays that they pay with $100 bills and their multiple rug rats are all wearing name brand expensive sneakers.

Most of the welfare folks I see are working side jobs under the table for cash and not paying taxes on that income.

I'm for helping people but I don't believe in rewarding bad behavior such as paying more in welfare benefits for each additional child they have. If they have time to fuch on the government dime, then they have time to work too AFAIC.

Not even close...

Good Luck with the Calexit, you libs can all get on the same sinking ship that way.

On a little different subject. I have two questions.
Are farm subsidies a hand out? Different form of welfare?

I'm sure glad your anecdotes are more accurate than many large, sweeping studies that have found the opposite.

I'm sure you've seen people that have been on the dole for years. I'm sure there are people that abuse the system. I'm also sure that despite your anecdotes, these are the minority. You don't see everyone who gets assistance. You don't even notice the ones that get help for 2 months and are off. You only notice the small percentage that is exploitative. You can't extrapolate that to anyone who has ever taken assistance.

Well, I guess obviously you can, it's just not accurate to do so.

Farm subsidies are a backlash from the Great Depression. The government had to pay the farmers to produce food for starving country. Since then to government has been subsidizing the farmers due to the fact that the government makes money off the farmer when selling commodities to other countries. And I I believe the farm subsidies come out of the food stamp program if in not mistaken

I found this on the net.
Why is the farm bill so controversial?
Critics contend that the subsidies it hands out are wasteful, illogical, and counterproductive — a welfare program for millionaires and giant agribusinesses. Over the last decade, the farm bill has cost taxpayers more than $168 billion. In theory, the program uses loans, price supports, and payments to protect family farmers from the fickle fluctuations of weather, price, and economic conditions, so that their businesses remain stable and Americans are ensured a steady supply of affordable food. In practice, the program keeps food prices high, costing consumers billions, while funneling most of its aid to giant agribusinesses and wealthy farmers. About 75 percent of total subsidies go to the biggest 10 percent of farming companies, including Riceland Foods Inc., Pilgrims Pride Corp., and Archer Daniels Midland. Among the "farmers" who get federal subsidies are Bruce Springsteen (who leases land to an organic farmer), Jon Bon Jovi (who owns bee colonies), former President Jimmy Carter, and billionaire media mogul Ted Turner. "The typical farmer has literally millions of dollars of wealth," said Dan Sumner, an agricultural economist at the University of California, Davis.

The people that are on assistance for 2 months are not welfare queens, which you claim no longer exist. I can TAKE YOU THERE, and introduce you to the 20% of the units in this housing project that have been occupied by 20 year veterans of welfare.

Just stick your head back in the sand. It is definitely best to assume there is nothing to see here...LOL

There are many years that our farm government payment was our profit for the year. Otherwise we wouldnt have made any money. And then that was paid out as dividends to the stock holders any way.... Asset rich but cash poor is most family farms.

Loudhandle,
Paying farmers not to grow crops is called "set aside programs" not "subsidies".

To answer some other questions,
Subsidies are just that, making up losses....
Before you mess yourselves and say "why doesn't my business get this?"...

In order for me to qualify I have to pay a premium. A hefty one.
It's simpler name is crop insurance.
Last year we had a mildew destroy 250 acres of Barley.
Our crop insurance paid us half of our loss.

Food stamps are included in the farm bill, as the farm bill is designed to assist in feeding the nation.
