Helmet cam Avy- Wake up call

CC – how can you compare someone who makes a living planning and achieving extreme sports to billy bob hitting a hill on his weekend off? Fact is, way to many people have died this year from avalanches, how many people have died jumping a stack of cars?

Our sport is very small when compared to MX/ATV….so the 30+ deaths seem like a very large number to me. IMO, ATVs will always be the most dangerous machines on the planet.

Now back to the topic, when and where are we buring CCpowder????....i get his sled:face-icon-small-hap:beer;

dumb ***

I saw two sleds in that shot.It`s not about the idiot that started it but the other rider he might have killed and all the other people that have to come and rescue your dumb ***.Take mike duffys av class and you will learn what to look for.

Any of you ever own a bullet bike?? Did you always follow the speed limit??

How many have a motorcycle that you ride on the highway and dont always wear you helmet??

How many of you have had a few drinks and drove??

I have done all 3. Do I do it now, maybe #2, but have learned from things I have done in the past. Be interesting to see how many of you cowboys will fess up.

Just want people to look in the mirror. I guess everyone on here ALWAYS follows the rules and NEVER does anything stupid. The point is too many of us need not live in glass houses and throw stones. :)

I posted this on his thread, and I still dont get it. Maybe someone can help me understand.

I guess I just don't understand.

Evil Kanevial and every other freestyle motorcrosser these days does stunts where they cheat death, yet we fill the stands and cheer!!

NASCAR drivers and every other motorsport racer cheats death and yet again, we fill the stands and cheer!!

What about the NFL playoff game when the guy got pulled off on a stretcher after getting hit, we fill the stands and cheer!!

A snowmobiler does what he loves, cheats death and we burn him at the stake.

I dont get it. No one wants to see anyone die, but most of us snowmobile because it is an EXTREME sport and we love the adrenaline rush. Take precautions, enjoy the sport we all love and let people make their own decisions, they are the ones who have to take responsibility and own up to their mistakes.

Its no different than being a cop. They go out every day with the fact that they could be killed on duty, yet they continue to go to work because they love it. How about a soldier?? All of these people had a choice, and they chose to risk their life for something they love to do.

Anyways, I am sure I will be tied to the stake after this.

Im glad someone finally had the balls to say this

Ok, how about this:

We as snowmobilers take measures to avoid avalanches. For example, we carry probes, a shovel, a beacon, ABS pack, etc. This is because we do not want to get hurt or hurt anyone. Dont want to see our own familes or anyone else suffer for a wrong decision. However, many dont take an avalanche training course in order to see the signs and stay away, putting themselves and othes in danger because of poor decisions. And as a result, people find this an irresponsible act.

Now, we all live in areas with bad weather and we drive in these conditions. We of course wear a seat belt and would assume most even drive a little slower. However, your decision based on not knowing how to drive in these conditions could endanger yourself, friends/family in the vehicle, people in other vehicles and even the rescue people. So, how many of you have taken a defensive driving course to know how to correctly drive in these conditions?? Is this irresponsible as a driver of a vehicle??

Dont get me wrong, I am not saying what the guy did was right or wrong. My only point is people find some things ok while others are wrong. And I am curious where the line is??

I say the following as a joke: You must all be mormons!! You pick and choose what you feel like is right and wrong. I know mormons who hammer other people for drinking, yet they have no problem hitting the casino. Or how about the joke about why you take 2 mormons fishing with you?? If you only take 1, he will drink all your beer!! (I am mormon in case you are wondering).

This is a great thread. The best thing to come out of this is that we are all reading and talking about it. Can't have enough reminders.

As a side note:
A lot of the extreme, high risk, thrill seeking sports are done by Professionals. And the guy that pulls the race car driver from the burning car is trained to do that as best he can.
Education and experience play a big part in recreational snowmobiling.
The willingness to take that risk for a rush is up to the individual. Just hope there's someone at the bottom that has the ability to find a save a life.

I've been there more than once myself.

I'll fess up, CC. I have done all 3. I do none of those now. Helmet always on a bike, booze never behond a wheel (i don't leave home much anymore though ;) ) and I no longer speed on anything since my car wreck. Not my fault but it taught me a lot about physics. ouch.

you are 100% correct. we used to hit everything no matter w/ no knowledge of danger. Evoultion changed that. Death changed that. If I point a finger and beat the drum I guess it's because I foolishly pray I can get someone to listen and save a life.

snow is way low for this time of year up high, Corey. LOT of boulders. we need more snow to ride the Lakes IMO.

His prerogative and right.

Life is short live it up....but I just like modsledr dont care to be on the mountain with this kinda of attitude!!!

ahhh and base jumping sounds fun!!!!

I have done 2 of the 3.....don't ride street bikes but what to get into riding dirt bikes.:D

I agree with Rock on pointing the finger and beating a drum.........If we just talk to one person in the parking lot or on the hill and it makes a difference thats what counts! I did this the day after Christmas over at Bear River and the guy looked at me like I was crazy for even saying something about staying away from the hills that weekend. :(

Cory I see the parody in your point. If I was lying on the street bleeding to death because I got shot doing my job I'd be sad for my family but proud. If I was taking my last couple breaths under a pile of snow on a hill I'd die feeling like the most IRRESPONSIBLE *** in the world.

Good point.

The bottom line is there is seldom a winner when someone dies.

Not Mormon;

Don't drink and drive;

Speed, frequently;

Took the defensive driving course, CDL, and used to drive a overweight military 18 wheeler in Europe, Greenland, and the middle east (on and off of C5's too);

Have taken the Avy course and will again tomorrow at Tri-City;

Didn't dig a pit up in the lakes yesterday but observed the natural slides, windloading, etc. Only climbed the few slopes that SS, Duner, Rock and I thought safe;

Don't think that with others at risk any of us have the right to do what might kill themselves too;

All my kids are married, my grandkids are growing just fine, but carry heavy life insurance so my Tink isn't left with nothing.

All that said I believe that we all have a responsibility to ourselves, our family, our friends, and our sport to come home alive every time. Loss of Dave (Animal) has had a huge impact on our community. BC will be hurting for the eight lost this year for a long time. The two young men lost above Logan and the 15 year old on Yamaha hill will never be replaced.

While we all have the ability and choice to end our own lives is that what the discussion here should be about?

If you're going to play in Avy prone areas please do it with knowledge and responsibility. Do it with the bystanders in a safe place. Think of what the natural avy path is and have others stay clear of it. Do it with all the appropriate gear.

Come home… I want to ride with you again.

I've read what dgoetz wrote explaining what happened and how he got onto that hill, that he waited until his riding partner (wife) was clear, that he'd riden there for 20 years without a slide.. It's the kind of decision that I would have made.. maybe it's the one that Kim, Duner and I made yesterday riding a south east facing slope above the lakes yesterday.. I stand by my statement that he was lucky.. Maybe not stupid like I thought at first. I hope that I have that kind of luck if I'm ever in that situation.

Very well said Chief!! Especially like these 2 sections.

Any of you ever own a bullet bike?? Did you always follow the speed limit??In town and were there are people around? Yes. Out of town in a more controlled enviroment? No

How many have a motorcycle that you ride on the highway and dont always wear you helmet??Dont step on a bike even to whip around the block with out one.

How many of you have had a few drinks and drove??Nope

I have done all 3. Do I do it now, maybe #2, but have learned from things I have done in the past. Be interesting to see how many of you cowboys will fess up.

So One and even that one I would go through good lengths to try control the situation as much as possible to keep it as safe as possible.

^^^^^^^ Realy, I am shocked that you would try and pull that out even if it was meant as a joke. Not a lot of class right there.

Some one said it, you can still ride and avoid those areas. Play in the meadows, avoid the big stuff. And as far as comparing what we do to extreme sports. Many difference. 1st They put mucho time into preparing the conditions and setups to make it as safe and predictable as possibel. 2nd if they wreck it is just them that gets put in the dangerous situation. If they get hurt people are on hand to help medicaly, still affects their fam if they get hurt. We Dont have the luxury of having people on hand to help us with injurys.3rd when you set an avy off the people that have to come in to try and save your butt end up being in danger also, If you wanna disagree all I have to say is look at the BC avy this year. It is extremely selfish to take the risk and then possibly put your "friends" in great risk to help save you.

Sweet, I have no class, I think I will go apply at OVS!! :) Would it help if I make a joke about a priest and a rabbi?? I edited my post for the more sensitive Snowesters.
