Having an RPM problem...need trouble shooting.

Dick, I had been running prefilters before this problem started.

I am running water temp guage, as I said above. Temps have been in the 110-135 range. Running an Avenger III.

the other little thing i would try before getting to crazy chasing the gremlins is changing the main jets to make sure they are clean and free of debris.

good luck getting the beast dialed in.

This is probably way off but I just went through a situation with a '01 800 RMK that would start fine, idle fine, and even occasionally pick up revs but generally when you tried to increase the rpms it would start backfiring and running like crap. Gave up and took it to the dealer, he figured out it was the CDI that had gone south, wouldn't advance the timing, intermitently of course. This guy is no dummy and he said he had never seen anything like it before and I sure had no clue. It was running fine, shut it off for lunch, fire it up and there it was. Maybe if you have a buddy with another CDI try swapping it out, who knows???

Thanks Dick, I can't remember what my gearing is but its pretty high. Also for the PSI info! very interesting although they do talk themselves up a little bit...:)

Remember me?

I had a sudden loss of rpm earlier this season on my 1150, very sudden drop of 4-600 and would get worse with each climb. I checked and changed so many things I don't know if I ever fixed it. I removed the attac and installed a variflo..... Anyway I was also clutching to 8200 until I was enlightend by one of you guys that it should be 7900. I put some 73g light tip cat weights in the drive and I never thought I'd run such a shallow helix but I ended up with a 54/38 in the Team driven to hold rpm on the hill. Like I say I don't know If I found or fixed the problem but it now rips like never before 79-8000 at 6000'. I have my exhaust valves blocked open and the whole time I'm reading about your problem I'm thinking exhaust valves. Hey I'm going to go out to the shed now and check to see if one of mine has come loose. Good luck on your nightmare.

Brent's was not running well on the top end. Replaced everything but the engine. Come to find out it was the pick up off the stator. Couldn't see it but the wire had worn through or gotten nicked, but was still covered in silicone keeping it together part of the time. Just another thing to check.

And as far as buying NEW cranks and thinking they are good. Nope. 3 cranks in our group that were 5+ degrees out of phaze in the past year.

Gotta love your mod sleds

I say its your stingers. Thats my guess, whos pipes?

Getting better...

I leaned mine WAY down today and was able to pull much better r's. Not yet where I want them, but closer. If you are relying on egt's, they can be misleading. A too rich condition could cause a "pipe fire" and give the appearance of high temps. Just something else to think about...

HardKor, I haven't looked at the EGTs as a sign yet. Not thinking about that yet.

I thought this was FIXED!

sounds like the reeds to me. I would pull them and do the water test, if they leak they are bad!

Water test for reeds???

sounds like the reeds to me. I would pull them and do the water test, if they leak they are bad!

It was my understanding that even if the reeds were bad it wouldn't affect top RPM?

What's the water test?

Thanks

take the reeds out and fill em with h2O and if they leak, they are bad.
you may be right about the top rpm also, I was thinking powervalves!

If you can try a Ducatti ignition. And I've also had the pickups from the stator go bad on a 02 800 ves mod motor, It would run fine until the pigtail got hot then started losing RPM or cutting out.
Timing maybe, Crank outta phase.

I feel for ya Scott, I sold my 925 last year.
