guns and sledding

was wondering if any of you carried a pistol when you ride? i was considering it in case i got stranded, i would feel alot better about it. i have my xd.45

So what are you going to do with it? Shoot yourself before you freeze to death? Shoot your sled for getting stuck?
You would be better off carrying some useful supplies to keep warm, food, and some signaling devices.

hells yes im always strapped when i ride, and for those who dont, whatcha gonna do when faced with a real live snowman?...ill blow that mothers head off from a hundred yards no problem:light:

EXACTLY!!!!!!

Shot a Yeti with my 10mm put that azzhatt head over heels down a ravine. Went to get a "trophy" as FS pulled up to check my reggie sticker.
Found out Yeti is an endengered species and sheet hit the mofo fan, confiscated EVERYTHING !!

Ive had my sled breakdown in a ditch in the mountains and took buddy over 20min to figure out I wasn't behind them, was pretty eary with all the sounds I was hearing of possible animals or predators roaming around and wasn't carrying and then decided I would. has happened a couple more times buddy and I got stuck up on a hilltop and I kept mentioning its spooky up here and said I feel like we are being watched he laughed, couple minutes later we got out and back down the hill to the road, as I rod up behind him he walked up and pointed into the trees and there were 5 Freakin Huge Wolves comng down from where we just were and they stopped and turned to look at us, I said lets get the F--k out of here and have carried ever since. one gets close to us again Ill blow its head off.

don't have big caliber but my Ruger SR9c 9mm with the 17rnd mag.

Wildcard

Odds of needing a handgun while sledding are really low. But, if that need arises, it's really hard to rig something up with zip ties, duct tape and a space blanket.

you americans are so funny. i love it

Rob

I always laugh when people from other countries comment on our gun laws...

As an American citizen, we are born with the RIGHT to bear arms, which includes handguns.

You, as a Canadian are guaranteed certain rights, too... this would be like you asking other Canadians "do you guys exercise your right to freedom of expression when you're on the mountain?

It's one of my pet peeves when citizens of other countries make fun of Americans for their right to bear arms, and our love for firearms.

As a law enforcement officer, I am carrying 90% of the time, always on duty, and off duty as well... The only time I do not carry is when I am drinking. With this said, it is irresponsible to leave a firearm unsecure in your vehicle, so unless you have a gun safe bolted to the floor, yes... it's not unreasonable to throw your pistol in your pack. And hey, look at it as a survival tool.. let's say **** really hits the fan and you have to spend a few nights in the bush... It would be nice to take down an animal for food/survival.

I know your post included some sarcasm, so I'm not trying to berate you..we're all sledders here.. I'm just stating my opinion :)

Back to the OP: I have quite a few choices, but I usually try to carry something light and sub compact, that I don't mind it sitting in a wet pack for 10 hours. (so, no, I don't carry my Kimber 1911)

There is a thread going right now in the Washington riding conditions of a gentleman that lost a hand gun from his pack. A follow up poster responded as not knowing why He felt the need to carry a "killing tool".Kind of bugs me because as a responsible permit holder I feel we have a right to carry and are not wanting to kill something.Just trying to be prepared for whatever life may throw at us either in the trees or at home.

Years ago rode with Canadians and they packed. I pack not so much for the 4 legged animals but for the 2 legged animals trying to break into your truck

What were they packing? It would be illegal to be in possession of a restricted firearm (hand guns) while recreationally sledding. In general you need a permit just to transport one from location to location. Off grid Forestry guys rarely even get issued a permit to carry for protection while in the bush.

It's illegal to carry any gun while on a snowmobile in washington state. Read the RCW's.

a revolver...

last year we were on motorcycles in Northern Alberta and NW Territories... I am sure the firearm I saw (specially the guy from Ontario with a small semi-automatic 22) may be illegal... but while BSing with other people they said they had AR15s... they claim most have the firearms and the Northern cops don't seem to bother then about them... unlike Southern Canada

Washington prohibits any person from carrying, transporting or conveying any loaded firearm in or upon any “nonhighway vehicle” except by permit from the director of fish and wildlife. Excepted from this prohibition is the possession of a loaded handgun by a concealed pistol licensee.

Key here the firearm has to be on your person

This thread always makes me lol....just 2 different mindsets. I can't think of something much more useless to bring sledding, unless going shooting for fun along the way or actually hunting with a sled.

Snowmobiles are exempt. No gun, even with a concealed permit.

(2) No person shall operate a snowmobile in such a way as to run down or harass deer, elk, or any wildlife, or any domestic animal, nor shall any person carry any loaded weapon upon, nor hunt from, any snowmobile except by permit issued by the director of fish and wildlife under RCW 77.32.237. (3) Any person violating this section is guilty of a gross misdemeanor.

RCW 77.32.237
Disabled hunter permits for persons with a disability.
The commission shall attempt to enhance the hunting opportunities for persons with a disability. The commission shall authorize the director to issue disabled hunter permits to persons with a disability. The commission shall adopt rules governing the conduct of persons with a disability who hunt and their designated licensed hunter

^ wow I coulda lived without seeing that. What a pusssy
As a responsible, legal, gun packing guy from Oregon. I could not agree more. I am not defending this dip chit one little bit with what I'm about to say. But, What if he had a small child with him? I really doubt if he did but i would do what it takes to keep my little nieces safe. And yes, I take them with me sometimes :face-icon-small-hap

i wasn't there but the guy in the video did what he thought it took to keep himself safe. moose are the most dangerous big game animals in north america and that one was pissed. plus go pro's make it hard to judge distances so the moose could have been much closer than it looked , sad for sure but if it's me or an animal it ain't going to be me
