Wade you are close...anyone that has been convicted of an enumerated felony cannot own a firearm. Federal law also prohibits those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from owning firearms. It is also against the law to have a firearm in your possession while having possession of illegal drugs or distributing illegal drugs. An enumerated felony means (armed robbery, burglary, possession of narcotics, rape, sex offenses, etc....usually crimes that are considered violent in nature) Some states, however, superceed the enumerated felonies and ban all felons from owning firearms. Regarding Idaho and federal law, a felon that was convicted of a non-enumerated felony ...such as fraud, grand theft can have a firearm in their possession after they have served their probation or prison sentence. All convicted felons can petition the court or parole board for reinstatement of their gun rights....5 years after their prison or probation term is completed.
