Anyone know anything more about the groomer falling through the ice at Cascade Reservoir err Lake? WTF was the groomer doing out on the lake?

Snow groomer falls into Cascade Reservoir

05:37 PM MST on Sunday, February 17, 2008

KTVB

CASCADE - The Valley County Sheriff's Office says a snow groomer is stuck in a Central Idaho reservoir and they have no way to get it out.

It happened earlier today in the west side of the Cascade Reservoir.

Valley County dispatchers say the grooming machine traveled 500 feet out on to the ice on Cascade Reservoir and fell through - into the water.

Dispatchers say the heavy machine is carrying diesel fuel but is not leaking any of that fuel at this time.

Currently crews are working to get the machine out of the water.

No one was hurt during the accident.

That sucks...
I don't feel totally safe riding my sled across the lake some times. it is slushy here and their around the shore. No way in heck would I drive a groomer or any other heavy vehicle across the lake.
Hopefully they get it out soon and their is no damage to it.

I don't understand why this year it seems like this is happening so much. Is there a influx of people that think these things are light weight and or they float? That cat he was driving weighs in the neighboorhood of 16,500 lbs without a drag and or tiller. Probably tops 18,000 if he was using a tiller and close to 20K with a drag. WOW!

I say all this even though I put one in a swamp this year but I can tell you one thing, getting the tracks a bit wet and the groomer stuck with very little water and mostly cat tails versus submerging it on a lake/resevoir is two totally different things.

What I want to know is, are they going to call the dealer and ask if any of this will effect the warranty?

Opps

That Groomer Is Fu-ket submerged in water, the whole electrical system will never be the same. That's way to bad, who will pick up the cost of removal and what-ever the hell else will go into TRYING to fix it.

I took some pictures Saturday----The date is wrong on the camera!

Operator is a bonehead. He said he went out on the lake to cool his tracks. He got them cooled off.

Word is it was running on the way down. They cut a road down to the edge of the water and had wreckers hooked on trying to pull it out. It did not even budge.
Sky Crane???

Boneheaded move yes, but ya know I've ran those groomers for valley county and the runs they make are long pulls. This guy was headed back to the shed after a long day (or night) of grooming, his senses probably were not at their best. Some of the runs in this county can be 20hrs long and I'm sure he was feeling it. Those of you who have ran the groomers know what I'm talking about. That said it's to bad for everyone including the operator. That piston Bully cost the state $240,000 I believe and I'm sure it will never be the same once they get it out of the lake and repair it. Just because something like this happened don't let this stop anyone from sending their funds to this grooming program. The trails have been far better the last couple years and it can only get better with everyones support. Watched the news tonight and it sounds like they may turn this into a rescue/training exercise for the national guard. Their calling in the big hewy

If they get a heli to yank that out I want some of you guys taking photos!

Most insurance companies that insure these things (if they had insurance) don't cover water crossing stuff. Some do it at their own risk and lets hope they have insurance because with the amount it's under, it still servicable but it's also going to be very costly.

As for running the amount of hours, it's more mental fatigue then anything else as you are always watching your mirrors and working the controls. It's not physical it's pure mental in these things.

I did 14 hours on Saturday and I was drained big time! I got back to my truck, filled up the cat, checked it over for the next guy and did my log book. When I started to drive home it was honestly like my mind and body weren't attached to anything, just like jello. Can't wait to get back in and do it all over again.
