Great help, Utah 4M member?

I don't get on here a lot, but wanted to relay this story. We pulled into the parking lot and noticed the guys next to us had a turbo Apex so we went over to scope it out. Sweet ride, the guy answered all of our questions, asked where we were riding, we told him, he asked if we had avy equipment and asked if we knew the avy conditions. We said that we had not checked the avy conditions, he told us what they were and gave us some info about the ice layer, etc. Two of us did not have beacons. He insisted that we take two of his. We politely declined, he insisted, said he would not be able to live with himself if something happened and we did not have one. He asked one of the guys if he was buried, would he want a beacon transmitting his location and would he want his buddies to have one to be able to locate him? He even gave us a quick refresher on beacon use. Needless to say, we borrowed the beacons. He said that if we got back before him to put the beacons in a certain location. If not, he took one of our contact info, gave us his and said that we would hook up to get them back. We lost his contact info, but he contacted my bud a few days ago and he got them back. Don't know if this was a 4M member or not, but sure restores my faith in my fellow man.:beer;:beer;:beer;

There are definitely some good peeps out there. Good to hear, and thanks for posting.

Thats is great, thank you for sharing, we always hear about the bad things that happen but to hear something like this is very releaving:)

I think the question should be raised, "why in the hell do you not own a beacon??"

100% correct! Mine was on order and my buddies was having some warranty work done. No excuse for planning to ride without a beacon. It could have been a fatal mistake. Just young and dumb and "it won't happen to me" attitude to justify going riding. All that fresh powder clogs the brain sometimes. I will say that he was so insistent that it made a huge impression on all of us and really made us stop and think. We vowed to never ride without one and to always ask each guy if they are beeping before leaving the parking lot (another thing that he told us). BTW, does anyone know who this is as I would like to thank him with a email or something?

And you can ride without a beacon, just have to ride areas where your safe. I just thought I would ask. :)

Do you have his name?? What did he ride?? Might be able to figure it out from there.

Hope its a lesson you don't block off next time your eager to ride. Remember, don't leave home without it!!! Bigger machines means bigger terrain means better be prepared. Hope you find that guy and really thank him. Thats great we have a few out there to count on. Now Put it on and ride!!!!:D:D

LOL - Nuckinfutz1, you dumb azz, you're welcome! It took a bit to convince those boys that I was pretty serious about them not riding Whitney Basin without a beacon. Even if I stood the chance of not seeing those beacons again, it was well worth it. Ya know, I've actually done this before a few times and have always ended up getting the beacon(s) back. Good karma I guess. Everyone stay safe, keep trying to educate other people. Nuckin - the best way to say thanks is to keep "preaching the gospel" to other mountain riders. We can make a difference. Stay safe fellas.

Bravo

this thread made me feel good to read... then I had a feeling... then it was YOU Larry! I was right. :) Larry, you practice what you preach and my hat is off to you. Nuttz, you just met one of the really great guys in this sport and the lesson he took his time to show you is priceless. Glad he made an impression on you. Larry, Good on you. :) with respect! Rock

I have realized how true that statement is now, especially after spending some time reading many of these avalanche related threads. It has put a knot in the pit of my stomach to realize how foolish we have been in the past. I did get my Tracker a couple days after meeting you Bigrock (Larry) and will ride with it always. I didn't really appreciate your generosity until later on when I really had a chance to think about it. To tell the truth, I thought that you were a little "off" being so persistent. Now, I realize just how important and passionate you were/are and the reason why. Great info and lessons to learn on here. Thanks again for caring and making a difference in our sport. It makes me realize that we all need to be ambassadors for this sport and not take our freedoms for granted.:beer;

Wow, that is a hell of a story for all of us to remember. I have met and heard of so many awesome Utah peeps that snowmobile. Maybe other places have the same thing, but, IMHO, the Utah guys are the chit! Here's a :beer; for ya Bigrock.

Hey Larry,
If I show up in the North Slope parking lot without sleds. Are you going to force me to ride yours? LMAO;)

BTW: what should I expect to be riding?:p

I will have beacons...............:D

The way you and the Mex ride, I have just the sled for ya, my wifes old short track VMax 500, even has electric start and a seat big enough for you both of you to fit - that's how you both like it from what I hear;). With some practice Ron, maybe one of these days you'll outride your better half!:D

You can ride with out one in an area that you think is safe but if your any thing like me when you come to that untouched face you wont be able to resist tracking it up. Better to just not go out with out one you never know what you might get in to or who might be counting on you to have one. Just a rule that i live by:light:Ride hard have fun and be safe:beer;:D

Hmmm, that electric start sounds pretty enticing. With my shoulder injury I can't even pull the rope.:o
Don't know about out riding but just hoping to keep up with her. LOL;)
