Got Skier thumb? Whats your trick..

Mona Vie--MUST READ

dont know what skiers thumb is but here is what i've got--both my thumbs were getting bad over the last 2 years--i'm a mechanic so this is killing me, i cant even tighten a oil filter with my left hand my thumb hurts so bad,i also couldnt pick up a cup of coffee with my left hand,i can ride sled but you hold the bars different than when your working and tightening bolts and such--got a buddy in south carolina calls me and says i need to try this juice and then he tells me about his wifes thumb problems-exactly the same as mine--hurts 24-7 and wakes me up several times in the night ..he says it will help and i tell him SURE it will so he ships me a bottle of Mona Vie and i try it 4 ounces a day..4 days later i think my thumb is not hurting as bad--7 days and it had quit hurting by about 75% remember this has hurt very bad for 2 years,so i ordered more and NO BS this crap works--my wife has the same problem and has been taking it for 2 weeks and it has helped her also---i told my son i was going in for surgery in the spring and right know if it never gets any better than right know i can deal with it ,no problem--not trying to BS you guys just stating fact,,this stuff is full of all kinds of natural berrys that have all kinds of health benefits---ck it out and if you think its worth a try let me know--if not no problem..i am a huge skeptic on stuff like this but you can pm verticle edge and ask him about it...sorry for the long post

Got your solution

I have skier's thumb, crashed wrong too many times with the straps on my wrists(bends your thumb a direction it shouldn't go). I went to a medical supply store and picked up a thumb brace, it just wraps around my wrist and velcros on, and keeps my thumb from bending that direction it don't like. Very thin and fits comfortably under my gloves. Cost about $10.

Thanks for all the feedback, I picked up a left, and I'm gonna try twisting the right hand throttle a bit to.

Basically skiers thumb is when you fall with your ski polls in your hand it tears you thumb back, making to so you can't pinch or grip things, it's a pretty common injury (I did mine doing boneless's on a skateboard).. I healed up pretty good over the summer, but when your thumb is on your throttle you stop to abruptly or land to hard, it causes you thumb to go back and dislocate.. there is a pretty simple surgery to fix it, but I wouldn't have use of my right hand the rest of the winter season...

As far as guard, I donno.. would that allow you to squeeze the throttle..

Right Hand Surgery

If you have time before you go under the knife practice daily activities with your left hand. Simple tasks like tying your shoes, brushing your teeth, combing your hair, and wiping your tail pipe take practice. I had shoulder surgery a few years back and did not have the luxury of preplanning or practice.

Good luck.

luckily I'm left handed both my shoulder and thumb injuries are on the right, thanks for the advice though!

We did 2 things to reduce thumb fatigue.

1. Had Darin at Gravity Worx make us custom throttle cables so we could use a billet watercraft finger throttle.

2. On our Edge RMKs I took the carb throttle return spring and let it unwind to the next catch, effectively reducing the throttle lever tension.

You guys who are chronic dislocators need to consider having your shoulders surgically repaired. Most likely, if your young (under 40), you have torn the labrum in your shoulder (think of it as the golf tee the ball of your shoulder sits on.........if the tee is torn, the ball can't stay on). If you older than 40 or so and you have a rotator cuff tear, that's a different ball game. Chronic (time after time) dislocators are putting themselves at risk for early arthritis and eventually ending up like the guy with the total shoulder replacement. Glucosamine will not stop the instability. It may help the progression of arthritis and may help with pain, but will not stop the shoulder from dislocating. Strengthening most likely will not help either (if the labrum is torn). Most likley you will need an MRI for evaluation, then see an orthopedic surgeon (pick carefully). Then BE SURE you get started with a GOOD physical therapist 3-5 days after you have the surgery. You certainly don't want the thing to get too stiff, then you have another problem. Count on being in a sling for 4-6 weeks not doing much, then you can begin to use and strengthen it. DO THE REHAB! Pain in the *** for a few months, but this is the only real way to get the stability back so your shoulder isn't flopping in the wind.
