Goodyear Gatorback belt

Hey 3211115 belt experts...

3211115 belt has a 1-1 1/4" section of cord missing out of the side of the belt.

Is this belt toast?

Belt was broken in nicely, stored on sled in heated garage at night, and is warmed up every ride with easy 2 miles before hammering on it.

Belt comes off every one or two rides (50-100 miles) to be scrubbed with dish soap and a brass brush.

The clutch faces are scotch brighted at the same time.

Belt has 915 miles on it (I love my new ProRMK).

Can I continue to use and observe this section... or is this a belt grenade waiting to go off?

After reading IndyDan's opinion of grenading belts impacting the crankshaft, I want to avoid grenading. I don't really want to spend $180 on a belt, BUT I will feel pretty stupid if I hurt the crank over $180!

Thanks,
Murph

I cut the threads back and ride it some more. Just keep an eye on it, it it continues then ditch it.

No loose threads poking out.... sorry for the crap photo...iphone

Should I hit the cords with a lighter/ torch to melt them or just leave it?

Thanks.

I don't think those threads are nylon. I'm guessing if they are anything other than nylon, they won't likely melt off, but give it a try.

My 115 went 40 miles on my new '10 Dragon. Lost three or four top cogs.

I'll post a pic.

Very strange and rare. How many miles on the sled? How many miles since the clutch was rebuilt?

Not sure if they would do it but you might try and have that belt warrantied by the dealer you bought it from. That is a long shot but if you have a good relationship with them and your clutch is in good shape then I would say you got a bad belt.

I am also assuming you didn't try to power the sled out of a stuck spot or something else that could damage the belt.

Rode 53 miles today including some hard pulls (no real long durations though) Belt looks exactly the same. The missing section of cord is the same length, about 4 bottom cogs

that happened to my belt also. i cut the area of the cord and it worked and is still on my sled after 1800 miles. its not granaded and it still works (slips) but needs to be replaced now. i was comparing it to a new 3115 and i noticed it stretched out quite a bit, maybe after the cord broke. either way that belt really impressed me and even if aftermarket came out with a belt made out of criptonite the 3115 is going back on my sled. good job on on your belts polaris. me and i am sure everyone else hopea the price gos down a little though.

I have been running the XS belts from Carslisle since they first came out. Even had them on my 03 800. Never a belt issue. I had spoken with the primary designer of this belt back then. His name escapes me right now.

Anyway, at the time the belt was designed to hold up to the big 1000cc Ski Doo's. And it has. In the process they discovered that it was also a much better perfoming belt. Like the Goodyear belt they noticed a big RPM drop. 600rpm on a cat just by switching the belt. This rpm loss translates into less belt slip. Basically, transferring more power through the clutches. Less belt slip then translates into less belt and clutch heat. Meaning better belt life.
I'm excited that the Goodyear belt is showing the same types of gains. I think this is going to be a very good belt.

I have stated it many times on here. The 1115 belt is virtually indestructable aside from possibly a bad batch out there. I just never felt it was a very good performing belt. It tends to slip. Some have even reported grooves worn into the clutch face from this belt.

Never ever take chances on your belts. If you are questioning it then don't use it. Depending on rpm and speed a blown belt can endanger you and your motor. The side impact from your clutch closing can be enough to throw your crank out of whack. Just FYI.

At least Carlisle was honest with saying that they don't have a belt to compare with the 3211115. Honesty is a good thing, instead of saying we have a belt that can hold up just as well as product X, just to sell more products. Carlisle has great products, and after hearing what mountainhorse said, its nice to know that they are up front with people about that.

I guess it may not be as strong, but they sure do hold up well.

Hey, Mountainhorse. Did you ever get any feedback from others using the Goodyear Gatorback yet? Mine is still on my 08 D8 without any problems.

Saw this thread popped back up to the top. For reference on my belt pic I posted above... Dealer gave me a new belt no questions asked.

Have a good dealer and keep your reciepts from these babies! :face-icon-small-win

I talked with all three....

The belt performed well but did not hold up very long for them.
The outer layer delamininated and/or heavy fraying of the belts...

1 turbo Dragon at 10 lbs boost, One Stock Pro RMK, another moded PRO.

The belt works better than the stock belts BUT... it does not last long ... The outer layer seperates and peels off like a banana in a very short time under heavy running.

I would much prefer to run this belt and hopefully, they get this lamination problem resolved so we can run it..

Just my .02

I Have a Gatorback and an ultimax XS belt both in hand. They are for an 800 dragon. They are both new I recived the gator back from a supplier to try out... and honestly, as hard as that gator back belt is in comparison to the ultimax I will not run that on my sled! I.E. when u pull a belt out of the sleave its sold in it usually has an egg shape. If you try to push the gatorback belt in together with both hands you have to work prtty hard to push it together. If you you slip when holding it together that belt will spring out and fly a few feet away from you. The ultimax is softer and one heck of alot more flexable. I have read this thing drops RPM's but as hard as this thing is I gotta belive its harder to turn, as in takes more power to run it. Its very hard at 80F what is it gonna be like at 10 degrees F. And like the Gates extream belts i used to run in the late 90s they lasted a lot longer but they were hard and would slip and wear the primary clutch. Carbon fiber is for tunnels not belts. Remember its just my .02

I went with the xs809 to save some $$. My sled eat em up. Cogs fall off after a few hundred miles. The 115 lasts a whole season. Actually longer than the damn engine.
