Gearing Questions for ktm 300xc

latest gearing change

So we have still been riding the cascades till yesterday and I have been trying to improve my set-up. I am definitely finding that the 12/17 17/20 is ridiculously low. I have been finding myself shifting constantly and ending up in fourth a lot of the time while climbing. Yesterday I switched my chaincase gears out to 19/20 and that was a definite improvement. Next I am going to go taller on the CS to JS set. I am thinking 14/19 with mrd-6. This should be a little taller with much less rolling resistance. I honestly think that the 12/17 for the the 300 is based on the fact that you cant fit 13/17 without a halflink, and Timbersled did not want to have to change the jackshaft gearing when sold for a 300. Yesterday the 300 was working really well with the LT. Only bike working better was a stockish 300 with a ST. I couldn't believe it. First time I have seen a ST out do a LT. Snow was super springy and temps were probably in the 50s or+. St bike could just flat haula$$ up the mtn. He did say that he couldnot follow me on the steeper more technical lines though. Did a compression test on my bike with my modded head and was shocked to see 225# on the guage! This thing is going to be gnarly with the wheels back on!

I ran a 2014 KTM 300 XC with a 2014 SX kit all winter and found that a 15 countershaft gear and stock SX gearing was awsome!! Now that spring is here and the snow is hard it is a little tall and to fast in the trees. I an having to clutch and break a lot more. I love the tall gear in the powder but not as well in the hard stuff.

Just for reference a 17/17 gear setup will work with the idler and all four stand off's in place, with links removed on a stretched chain, on a LT chain case 2014. I ran this on my turbo bike.
