We are arriving late sunday night (3/13) and plan on riding mon-fri and leaving sat morning (3/19). So, yes, all mid-week riding!
I guess we'll keep an eye on the weather and hope for a bluebird to head up to the top.
How many miles up to the highway by trail from Albany? How many further to Widow? How far from Ryan Park lodges to Albany? 1st time to the snowies, but wanna take it all in, so we can decide for next time what/where we liked.
Thanks for all your help!
If there are some locals or another small group that would like to show us around (or keep us out of trouble for a day or two) while we're there, let me know. So far 3 or 4 us riding 2011 M8's and XF8 SP 141's w/2.25".
If you follow the trails from Albany to the Highway it is 20 miles. That is where T meets U on the top of Libby Flats.
From there to get to the Widowmaker you should head cross country (no trail) to where you see the "gap" in the mountain range (Gap Lakes on the map). My best guestimate is that this is 2-3 miles from T-U intersection. Perhaps someone will chime in with a more accurate measure - I am just going off of Google Earth.
If you take trail Q all the way from Albany to Ryan Park it is about 35 miles - again this is just hauling down the trail - there are a ton of roads and meadows off the trail that you will want to hit. On the way back you would at a minimum want to take U or V-U back to T and then down to make it a loop. If you take pack gas with you to Ryan Park and head out with full tanks you may even be able to ride around the backside of the peaks and through the rollercoaster/widowmaker back to T - watch your fuel if you go that route. (From Ryan Park take U to N to NO and then either cut through the gap or go to trail O and cut back to trail U - then hit T to Q to get back to Albany) - watch the weather and the daylight too along with your fuel.
If you have a GPS that you can download custom maps to shoot me a PM with your email and I can send you a .kmz file that has the snowy range trail maps overlayed onto Google earth. I don't use it much in the Snowy's but the map I made for SLO came in handy when we were up there earlier this season - that way I have nice big colored lines on the gps screen that even an idiot like me can navigate to....
I don't think I can ride next week - but if I head up that way I will shoot you a PM if I go up for a day trip. (assuming that you will have internet access somehow?) I ride a heavy 4 stroke so you probably want to steer clear of me
