Gas or Diesel...

I think all diesel trucks are going to have their own "personality" (for lack of a better word). My husband and I have two 07s. Theoretically the exact same truck, but we get different mileage, mine runs colder and as a he!! of a time hitting running temp. around town. The only time she gets close to being hot is when when we pull heavy crap with her. Go figure.

They take your own "personality" if you got them at zero miles and your man broke his like a man it'll run like a man. If ya break it like a girl it'll run like a girl. Its all in how ya break in the computer system & motor. Thats my experience anyways. W/that said Break it Like a Man!:D

Well Sled, you know what happens when you assume . . . she has a chip and she pulls various trailers. They are just two totally different trucks. BTW ~ she gets the better mileage too. W/that being said it has been broke in like a man! :D

So just what kinda mileage doo you get with the 8.1??Just curious what a real world person gets...not the average salesman story. Our son ran a 00 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 5.3, 20 mpg when he drove it proper  Ran a sled deck in it with air bags , it got around in the snow good, great ergos, 170 K miles on it with no problems.... Dino

I get 10 mpg around town, 9 mpg towing the 16' enclosed with 2 sleds or the 24' enclosed with 3 sleds... doesn't seem to make a whole lotta difference how big the enclosed trailer is to a certain point because most of what you're pulling there is from wind resistance. I get 13-14 mpg unloaded on the highway ... 285/75/16 tires on 3.73 gears. I get ~12-13 towing my single-axle 4-wheeler trailer down the highway @ 80mph with a quad and a dirt bike on it.

That motor is calibrated to tow, and that's about it :o

For comparison, I got 8-9mpg towing the exact same enclosed trailers with my 2000 5.3L and it's not even funny how much better the 8.1L pulls it. With the 4-wheeler trailer I got about 15 with my 5.3L however.

Honestly the only thing I don't like about my truck is the 26 gallon gas tank. It really needs to be like 44 gallons :)

my 01 8.1 ext cab SB with 285s and 4.10 gears gets about 10 mpgs around town and 9 towing the open 4 place with 4 sleds. mine unfortunatly is a cali. truck to so it has all the extra emissions bs to. my bros 03 8.1 reg cab LB with 265s and 4.10s averages around 12 mpgs in town and 10-11 towing. havent got much highway time on mine but one trip it got 12 with six dirtbikes on the trailer and all the camping gear and a BIG load of firewood. in the 03 with 3 dirtbikes in the back and all our camping gear we got 16 mpgs once on the open road. i dont know why mine gets 2 mpgs less unless its the extra weight, bigger tires or maybe just the cali restrictions. like mentioned it doesn't matter how big the load you only lose 1 or 2 mpgs no matter what, thats the beauty of the big block. i have a buddy with a 03 1/2 ton with the 5.3 and he gets 15-16 around town empty but with the same trailor and 6 bikes it drops down to 12-13 on the highway so not much better when towing than the big block.

from what ive seen the big blocks aren't much worse on mileage than any of the newer diesels, say anything built after 99. i've got friends with all breeds of diesels and around town they get an average of around 14mpgs and only 10-12 mpgs towing. i dont buy the hipe about all the 20+mpg claims out of the diesel boys cuz i've never seen it except on a couple older early to mid 90s diesels. so to me it doesnt seem worth it to own one with the extra expense in fuel and the rediculous repair costs.

oh and i agree with dogmeat on the fuel tanks, mines the 26 gal and my bros 03 is the 34 gal and he can get alot farther than me on a tank of fuel. i wish i had the 34.

If the purchase price doesn't scare you off, diesel all the way. I love my duramax, starts at -40, never been plugged in, runs like a race horse and pulls like a mule.

WOW I honestly cant believe how many people on here are favoring gas trucks...maybe most of you gas supporters have never owned a diesel or have had bad luck with them. I myself will never own another gas truck if I can help it. Yes they are more expensive to maintain, but to me the bennifits far out-weigh the downfalls. 1:Way more power and torque 2:Better fuel milage, especially when towing 3:No slowing down going over hills 4:Much longer useful life if cared for and maintained propperly. Those are just a few of the major advantages IMO. I have owned 2 Duramax's...my old one being an '03 and my new one is an '07.5 and its my baby! It has a 12" lift with 37" tires and gets 17-18 mpg @ 70-75 mph. The only complain I have is that Diesels are like a drug...a very addictive drug! Once you start modding you cant quit and there goes your money lol. You can never blow too much black smoke! :D

Lift Pump

After the install of a new lift pump in the tank this summer, and now a Inj. Pump $$ 1100 , and fuel Gage...the lift pump has only 6# under load ...without the chip  Shoulda had the gage earlier:face-icon-small-blu So its like $300 for just a good lift pump, $500 for a Air Dog system with filters....$$ 1600 for a fuel system :( IMHO that just shot the hell outa economy-mileage for the diesel... cant even count the number of times the companys f550 went into the shop last year. we got it brand new the end of the year before so i'd like to blame it on being a ford.. 3/4 ton silverado gassers have anywhere from 200,000 to 300,000 and rarely see the shop.. espeially for engine trouble

Sounds like a typical ford...aka (F)ound
(O)n
(R)oad
(D)ead

And a typical Chevy...300K and still runnin strong! :D

Had an 06 Dodge diesel Mega cab, then last year I bought a new 6 liter GMC 2500 gasser, what a mistake never again! I average 12 mpg with the GMC and I averaged about 17 with my diesel, plus it pulled my enclosed trailer and other stuff that I tow like it wasn't even behind me. This gasser tows like sh!t and is a gutless wonder compared to the diesel. If you have the extra $$$ IMHO go with the diesel.........:face-icon-small-win

I've owned tons of Chevy gasers which were very reliable trucks but, my last to pickups were Dodges with the Cummins 5.9L and I have never had a problem with either even all chipped up,exhausts, air intakes......etc the 04.5 was a 3500 with 115,000 miles on it when I got rid of it an my 07 2500 now has 51,000 miles on it with no problems, after being boosted I'll never go back to gas trucks.

cummins will go forever...
6.0L silverados can definitely pull for being gas powered but no matter what diesel is the way to go for towing.. especially in higher altitude and going uphill
