Gallagher snow report

How much new was on top of the tracks from yesterday up the jeep trail?

Not sure about how much new on the jeep trail over yesterday. We were not the first ones up the jeep trail as we tried the other trail first. There was a group of 4 I think that went up before us and the only people we saw all day. Couple of them did not make it in due to mechanical problems I think. As for the main road up there was about 14 inches of fresh. When we got up the trail into the lake area there were no tracks so either no one rode there yesterday or it snowed a ton. Guessing it snowed a ton as other people had to have been up there yesterday.

Precisely why we stayed in the meadows and trees. Would not want to head up the bowls right now even if you could get up there.

Think about the trail up there---How many avy chutes do you go across--and the valley in to the saddle--all avy area. Just a heads up--Me and a freind were back there in the same kind of situation--could not figure out why we did not see anyone else--But the snow was calling us. Well on the way back out of the trees and meadows--Powderboy got hit by a avy and we were lucky on that one as he escaped it and his sled got partily buried. We got it unburied and headed out and I got hit from behind and was able to outrun it. After this we got much more active in education on avy's and our calls as to where we ride in the conditions.
I guess what I am saying--is think and check before going riding as to the conditions in the area you want to ride and be aware of changing conditions.

Paul - you are right, Avy was risk was HIGH. We read the reports and kept off the all of the hills. You do cross a few small chutes on the way up, you are right. We stopped before each and looked to make sure it was OK. Also, no sign of any self triggered Avy's and NO sign of any rain up high either. If we saw any of the signs that said things were sliding on there own, we would not have gone. The three of us are still young, and plan to keep riding until we are old. :D

That is good that you are paying some attn there. I was shoveling through the layers looking at it--Okay--but the top was not binding to the lower levels of snow.

Just watch as we want you around to ride for years to come!!

ya - we actually did a little digging when we were stuck on a small hill (not big enough to slide) and noticed how there was 2ft layer on top of some older surface hoaring. It looked weak enough to slide on the big hills, but wasn't bad enough to slide unless triggered (over 5000ft anyway). Point being, be careful up there guys. the snow pack is still new and has a number of weak layers. time will fix it, so please be careful this new years as there has been enough time to compress the weak layers yet. with the number of deaths already, we don't need any more. Please be careful and read the reports before you head out. most avy deaths accure with people that are familar with the area and have training. Just say NO to your inner POW bug when it calls you to tear up some steep powder face. :D

Buddy and I went up to the lake saturday evening as a couple of m1000's were coming down the jeep trail. Their tracks were almost covered up in an hour. Buddy got the flu, started puking and we came back down. Broke 3 sleds up there friday in 14 miles.
