FYI someone plowed Rt 35 from Nobletts parking lot up toward Wolf Creek

I'm feeling devastated. And I feel like this will be a never ending battle.

Rally your local representatives. The Vernal rep is already in someone's pocket.

By the way... was just reading some of the remarks on the KSL website with regards to this story. We need more Sledders to post up on the KSL site... Our voice is already getting drowned by folks thinking it's a great idea to plow the road... comments like... Oh... those snowmobilers have plenty of other places to ride, what are they complaining about... the road is paved and should be plowed etc etc. We need our voice heard on the media too not just snowest. Just saying...

Here's a link to the comment section for the KSL story

Is it time to set up a protest at the state capital over plowing Rt 35??

Get several hundred sledders out in front of the capitol with the media there on a Saturday with signs? Maybe the Governor would take note and ask a few select representatives and UDOT what the hell are they doing here!!!

Thanks, I was going to suggest that as well. Having only a few voices contributing to the discussion makes it look like we are in the minority, and are whining when we have a legitimate reason to be upset about it.

Going up there tomorrow. Wondering about parking. Can you drive all the way to Mill Hollow turn off? Any room to turn a big trailer around? This plowing is BS!!

I searched Google map and a few other navigation sources and this is what I came up with.
Option #1 SLC to Tabiona via 35. Is 87 mi, and takes 1 hr and 48 min.
Opption#2 SLC to Tabiona via 40. Is 109mi, and takes 1hr and 50 min.
TWO MINUITES!!!!!!!!!!!! “LIFE LINE “ please!!! Not to mentions once winter starts laying it down or one commuter gets behind one truck and trailer navigating the wet high mt road and you will be adding tons of time to the 35 rout, plus all the rigs with trailers and sleds darting across the road at any given point. Going on route 40 is the safer rout; they keep it maintained better than almost any other road in northern Utah. That is mainly because the amount of raw fuels that are trucked down from the Vernal area. I think it is about one tandem semi every 37 minutes. . What a waste of money.
There is defiantly something ease going on here:crazy:<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if !mso]><object classid="clsid:38481807-CA0E-42D2-BF39-B33AF135CC4D" id=ieooui></object> <style> st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } </style> <![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]-->

I now live in Idaho (thank goodness) but spent the better part of 25 years riding wolf creek and soapstone when I lived in Salt Lake, and this pains me to see the stupidity of UDOT rear it's ugly head. What really concerns me is that if you read the article in question, the much larger threat is the entire Uinta basin itself. Mirror Lake Highway is also part of this "study", and if you lose both sides of the mountain it will be a catastrophe for snowmobilers. The combined usage from Noblett's or the Soapstone side affects many hundreds of users, motorized and non-motorized alike. That doesn't even begin to take into account the mirror lake highway itself. This needs to be killed before it gets any farther. With a legislative session coming up, now is the time.

Having said that, UDOT is susceptible to pressure from your elected leaders, and even if you don't live in those counties, you should still be getting involved.

Lastly, has anyone talked to the snowmobile association about this?? They should be on the forefront of this fight.

One more thing that hasn't been brought up yet, where does our money from registration fees go know that they are not grooming? Granted this is only one route, but they have already talked about plowing several others. Do our registration fee's go down now? Highly unlikely. But where is the money going this year? Are any complexes grooming yet? We all need to make our voices heard but they only hear the many, not the few.

I went to wolf creek today, what a joke. If you have a 4 door truck and a trailer you will need to park in the Nobletts parking lot. They had to use a blade to plow the road, which is only plowed 3/4 of the way. The edges of the road aren't plowed. It has made a huge ice chunk mess up both sides of the road. Close to 18" to 2' high. Even going pass the mill hollow turn off. So there is no way on a road that's not fully plowed that you can get turned around along the freeway. It will be hard for two vehicles coming opposite directions to pass each other. It is a mess. Along the north side of the road is ride able but you better bring a kidney belt and a neck brace. There is no was to groom it with all the road reflectors going up the side. It's was beyond whooped out by the time we came back down tonight from mill hollow.

Is there some way that we can start a petition for the guys that park up there. I sure most of the guys and family's that sled up there aren't members of snowest. I have some friends in the Kamas area and I sure that we could get them to drop off and pick up the petition every day. I hoping we good some good snow quickly so I can start going to strawberry river. Coming back tonight along the side of the road was ridiculous, and it will only get worse.

I would guess it more old field companies that are paying for the road to stay open. All the homeowners that have house up there should have been told when they bought the house highway 35 is a seasonal road and will be closed in the winter.

There is now way it's a safety issue thing. Or the roads would of been plowed today. It snowed up there last night an the roads hadn't been touched when we went up it came back down.

These may very well be oil companies contributing to the back pocket of the representatives so they can avoid the weigh station in Heber. That would be the main benefit for them to keep this open in my mind. Did any of you folks riding up there in the past couple days see what the majority of the (very limited) traffic was...cars, tankers, plows, etc?

My same thought, if we start seeing crude trucks coming down the pass, just know they're over loaded by no less than 20%. They'll be grossing between 150-160k pounds. (Legal is 125k)

Someone will smoke their brakes before too long, wreck, die, and create a 18,000 gallon crude oil spill in our precious Uintahs.

Mark my word!!!

Who owns a backhoe? Let's just go dig a 50' hole in the road before the gate so when they get here from the other side they have nowhere to go and have to turn around.

Also I have contacted UDOT and left messages and they have not returned one call or email back. Maybe they are still off for the holidays.

I do like the idea of taking our rigs and blocking off the road but let's do it at the Capitol or somewhere like state street or the freeway on a weekday morning during rush hr. Forget blocking off the 10 people trying to use the road. Let's make it hurt in the valley.

Sent My Letter In, Hope it does some good!!! Let me know what ya think.

I’m writing this letter in response to the recent plowing of groomed winter recreation trail SR-35. The Nobletts Trail Head and parking area is used by thousands of people each year for winter recreation. The Nobletts parking area is always full. The reason for this is because this road is a vital link within the Western Uintah winter trail system. This trail connects the Mirror Lake, Soapstone and Strawberry Complex of winter trails.
Plowing this road completely destroys the trail system Utahns and out of state visitors have always enjoyed. I find it very disturbing that UDOT would consider keeping this road open during the winter months. It is a complete and total waste of tax payer money.
Please refer to any map program. SLC to Tabiona with ideal conditions, Route 1 utilizes SR-35. Driving time from SLC to Tabiona is 1 hour and 55 minutes. Route 2 utilizes Highway 40. Driving time is 2 hours and 6 minutes, a difference of 11 minutes.
How many tax dollars will UDOT spend to keep this road open only to save a small handful of people 11 minutes of drive time? What is the cost of destroying winter recreation for thousands of people each year who buy fuel, food, lodging, supplies etc. in the Kamas area?
I urge you to use our tax dollars wisely, STOP the plowing of this vital winter trail SR-35 and let people get out and enjoy, “The Greatest Snow On Earth”.

Sincerely, A concerned Tax Payer

Someone needs to plow out the mill hollow and soapstone turn outs about 50-100 feet so that people can turn the trailers around. Probably do this at the campground entrance at the top of the pass too

A guy could also buy a chain and lock and shut the gate and lock it - they will cut it but they it will be a day or two of pain for udot

Safety? I'd like to personally invite these boneheads that are involved in this to join me for a Saturday to sit roadside and watch the circus. I'm trying to imagine the headlines: "Family killed when a crude oil truck sideswipes their vehicle", "Property owners in Hanna die after sliding off WolfCreek Pass": "Assault charges filed after snowmobiler-motorist scuffle".
Pass the popcorn... this is going to be interesting.
