Future of snow biking?

I would love a Aprilia 550 engine for about 30 minutes until your engine craters. I would know...I had two both ended up cratering!

Im not worried about weight. Just a little more power would be good for my big ***.

Titanium valves, or something else give out?

my new factory edition SX450 is well over 60HP and 224 lbs, I looked at the CR500 dyno charts and it was 56hp and heavier back then, new iron is getting light and efficient for sure.

Yea but they're pushing 80hp or more with the mods like the LIGER CR 500.

Your 60hp bike will be 42hp in the parking lot of many Colorado riding places. And about 36hp at 13k.

So you're down to a 125 before you even get it unloaded.

Not my year 500, stock was higher than that, add in motor work I'm likely pushing 80 hp. And if not I would be shocked if I am much less.

I can honestly tell you this... I have a high hp cr500.. I rode someone's 16 450sx on the16 Timbersled and the length of the gears is crazy, the power is great. It feels crazy light ...... Now is it usable, light and a great snow bike yes yes yes... Is it as exciting and fun as the cr500 .... Nope nope nope ..... But the cr you have to be pickier on the gears and it uses a bit more fuel... I could also own 3 cr500s for the price of admission of the ktm

Yeah, agree with you on the length of gears issue, I'm going between 2-4th non stop. And hit first and fifth often enough. Lot of work, but like you said hard to beat. One big reason I went with the 500 over my 450 was longevity and cost to rebuild and keep going for years to come, the 500 will also retain it's value much better than the others.

That's crazy talk that getting into a Reliable CR500 is cheaper than a KTM. Only if ur time has no value.

I buy them all the time for $1500 that have been sitting, clean out the carb, throw a fresh top end at it that I always have in the box on my shelves. Jet it out of the factory manual put a tank of gas in it and ride. They never break, they always run, they smoke everything except another big bore 2 stroke with a lighter guy than me stock. I don't get the maintenance thing?

My buddies all drink that cool aid and every one of them either spends way more time or money on maintenance than me.

Maintenance schedule....ride all week after work, then ride on the weekend. Sunday night pull drain plug when you pull into the garage. after dinner install fresh air cleaner and top off oil with about a quart of tractor hydraulic fluid from walmart. Done ride another week.

seriously the most reliable cheapest to maintain bike in History. jet out of the book for conditions...don't even have to pull the carb.

Yes it eats more rear tires than most but you get fast at changing them and good at watching for closeouts.

Maybe the snowbike thing is different but I ride it without a kit in 2' all the time and much more than that in the spring. I have a piston on my desk that was in the bike for 7 years ridden weekly and run at the dunes a dozen times easy, could have left it in there just felt guilty. I have seen worse people are trying to sell on ebay it still looks good.

I dont get it?

KTM's are the queens of the snow bike world. I don't know any KTM riders that will even ride dirt without a full complement of tools, they double those when going out into the snow.

Ive never taken tools on any of my ktm/husky rides on dirt or snow. The only bike Ive ever towed out of the backcountry was a cr500

I have both..... Ktm 300 2013 modded and a cr500 modded ... Both are stone cold reliable... The only thing I find on the ktm is the gaskets go and seep oil sooner than the cr...my front sprocket seal, clutch side case seal(the worst) been through 3 in 500 hours, exhaust valve cover seals... But honestly a top end every 100 to 150 hours and call it good... 200 hours on the cr500 and 500 on the ktm 300... I bring tools for either .... That is just smart riding in the back country... If things are not breaking your not riding hard enough good gas, good oil clean air filter and feed it Rotella..... As I do for all 5 of our bikes for the last decade...

Your crazy Man!!! I don't break down really ever, but I always bring tools. I've fixed Honda's KTM's, Yamaha's...man everything mechanical will break. I can't even count how many times I've peeled off a chunk of quick steel for someone to repair a case or cover. Ive never even used the stuff myself. Masterlinks, tools, bolts, fuel filter and line, hoses, tape, wire, clamps, first aid, water, food, emergency blanket, tow strap, phone, ID, spot messenger/tracker, tube, tire repair, air, lighter, man the list continues on and it all lives in my camelback and I would feel more naked without that than I would my helmet. I work on my bike out of my camelback, it insures everything I need to work on my bike is in there. I don't carry the full custom tools like a flywheel puller of course but it has everything else. I expect the people I ride with to carry the tools they need or I consider them unprepared.

Could be why I don't have that many people I ride with. My CR500AF will go about 70 miles on a tank and if it starts I want to ride a tank, my 650 will go 100plus. on a 75 mile ride you can get yourself 35 miles away from anything....that's a long walk.

Im not 100% sure but willing to bet both of those were setup issues. I ran both a 450 and a 550 as hard if not harder than most and barely an issue other than setup.

I only wish i didnt get rid of mine before i got the snowbike itch as it would have been a challenge to setup but man would that beast have been a blast on a mountian. 14,500 rpm and pushing 90hp at 265lbs...hells yea.
