friend totalled my sled. what do i do to cover my a$$?

may be you should have insurace next time. i'am actually glad you are out of a sled. don't need people like you running trails without liability coverage

hmmm wow. thanks for the support guys.

how many of you actually have insurance? those of you who arnt wealthy

I have insurance, I'm not wealthy, but I'm intelligent enough to carry liability insurance and like to protect what assets I have right now. It's also required by the law in ND that sleds have at least liability insurance. Who is going to pay if you cause property damage or personal injury to someone while riding sled? The $14/yr I pay for my $50K/100K insurance policy is good peace of mind.

Just as someone said earlier I can't afford to not have insurance.

I do, I dropped my sled of a cliff in nov. Insurance cut me a check for 4.5k, put the time in, and fixed it myself for about 700-800$ Pocketed the rest.. Things can go bad so fast on a sled.

:mad:Your an F'n Criminal!! Why am I not surprised.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Do not listen to this idiot!!!
well...say it was carefully parked in your yard and your bud hit it with his vehicle...his vehicle insurance should pay for it then...so put a few dents in his rig...or somebodys obliging rig to make it real and get collecting...oh yea if ya want say you were sitting on it in your yard as well and get some whiplash bucks...if it was stolen from your garage will household insurance pay...put it in your garage and burn the garage down and fire insurance will cover it...heck man alot of ways to get er done....so get er done..!!!

This is my translation of what you are saying.

I don't really care about anyone else. It's all about me. I don't have alot of money and i'm going to use the excuse that i'm a young ADULT so I can make bad decisions that could affect other people but I don't care cause it's all about me.

Now I don't know you but highly doubt you actually think that way but I'm pretty sure your buddy didn't set out thinking he was going to wreck your sled either.

This easily could be about you wrecking someone else's sh*t. You don't have insurance. You told us all you don't have any money. What good would a contract with YOU do me if you don't have the ablilty to pay. Would you make $25-50 a month payments? That would do me very little, I want my sled fixed now, not 1-2 yrs from now.

Insurance isn't just for wealthy people. I'm insured for just the opposite reasons. I'm not a wealthy person. I don't have lots of cash sitting in the bank for times when "sh*t happens" so I buy insurance to cover my azz or someone elses in cause "sh*t happens".

Nobody is trying to break your balls. I'm sure you're a fine young man. H*ll you're going to college not selling drugs so that's a good start but don't get so wrapped up in it's all about "me" and look at the bigger picture.

^^^^^^^^^^ I'm sure, in your mind, you're just a regular shmoe getting what is owed him. I can assure you, it ain't the case. You sir, are a man with no morals. You are a crook who causes the rest of us to pay for your lack of character.

There is a difference between problems like ragincajun is dealing with, trying to figure out what's right, what's due, and your thinking: that of dishonesty and lies.

hmmm wow. thanks for the support guys.

It's those of us that aren't wealthy that need to insure. Now you know why.

Chalk it up to hard lesson learned.

Ok, so you and I are both riding in the bowls, which we have done, and you hit me. I know you did not mean to, but you did. I have over $15K in my sled and now the tunnel is wrecked, front end is done, rear suspension is toast. Basically it is totalled. I am out $15K, but I will just settle for a new sled, so there is $9K. Now say you injure me and I have to be airlifted out, there is probably another $3K, hospital is easily another $9K. I am out of work for a month, another $4K. How am I going to pay my house payment and other bills. I can't loose my house because of what you did, but I could. This is a cheap scenario, it really is.

Lets do the math, $10 to $20 a year for LIABILITY insurance or $25,000 to cover my expenses.

If you really care, you will at least get LIABILITY insurance to take care of someone else. I know you can afford that. PLEASE AT LEAST COVER YOUR AZZ so that you can take care of me or someone else that you could hurt. I carry liability insurance on every sled I own, even ones that do not get ridden. I carry full coverage on my sled and the sled my husband rides. $125 a year for $10,000 in coverage, the other one is even less. I have uninsured and under-insured coverage as well. Part of owning a sled, a car, a house, is making sure that if something happens, whomever I hurt is taken care of.

You are young, but you don't want to still be oweing me when you are old.

So that was your lesson in responsibility. Now to help you out with your dilema.

First and foremost, with him accepting responsibility, you are a step a head. Next, even though he is responsible, is there insurance on the sled he was riding? If not, then does his vehicle liability insurance cover it? If not, truth be told, the owner of the sled is responsible for your sled. He is the sled owner and he made the mistake of not having proper liability insurance on the sled. He also made the mistake of loaning the sled to someone. Again, part of being a sled owner or a vehicle or house owner.

Yes, being an adult sucks. It is laiden with responsibilities and mommy and daddy can't fix it for you anymore. We had it so good when we were growing up, but now life hits hard. Because you are not rich, get the proper insurance. At least LIABILITY insurance. Your parents can help you out with the sled insurance if you want full coverage, either with the payment or adding it with their insurance. You can also make monthly payments. Do you have insurance on the vehicle you drive? If not, please refer to comments above and double the amount. Do you really want that hanging over your head for the rest of your life?

I'm certainly not wealthy, newest sled is an 05 Poo 900, but I'm educated in life enough and have enough common sense to know to cover my arse in case things go wrong, and they will sooner or later.

I carry 500k liability and full coverage on both sleds and trailer, $625 year.

Liability is.....well...a small price to pay for liability. Think of it this way, most people are going to have an accident, at least once. So, if you factor in all your years riding, figure out how much you are going pay total for insurance, take that value and compare it to a hypothetical accident involving you and a riding partner, or a complete stranger. I'll bet it's a ton cheaper to have the liability than pay for a new sled, hospital visit, and if the guy is an ***, who knows what else he can bring up.

Bottom line, everyone here can say "shoulda", but in the end, you didn't and now its going to cost you. Hard lesson learned the hard way.

Childhood's getting shorter.

Auto insurance became mandatory right after I got my license.

I refer to my above post, how long till pedestrian insurance.

Then come INSURANCE/insurance, someones getting rewarded, not the defendent though!

Write up a contract and have him sign it. If he doesn't oh well, your on his word that he'll pay. Next time don't let people ride, drive or loan out your stuff unless your prepared to pay for damages yourself. (my personal rule of thumb.)

Insurance is a good thing. I have State Farm and it costs about $400 a year to insure for 12 months. Sure is worth it when you smoke a 11,000 dollar sled!

got him to sign it yesterday. is there still a little confusion? i didnt loan out the sled he hit me with. i was just along for the ride and then that fiasco happened. next sled i get it will have full coverage on it. i learned my lesson here. thanks for the help fosgate.

Hayden,
Going out in the fresh pow on Sunday. What are YOU doing?

I never saw any place it says he loaned out his sled to the friend who wrecked it. DUH!!!!!!

ya my buddy kevin lent his uncle's sled to the kid who hit me. he did have permission to use it. looks like im probably done for the year after saturday. bill said i could go with them and ride his wife's 700 but ill have to see. sled is in the shop right now getting a quote.

You know I read a post something to this effect over on Dootalk about Christmas time where a guy didn't have insurance on his '08 XP and it got stolen up in Canada. He also claimed that insurance was too high and all the sad stories that go with it. The guys on Dootalk were even putting together a fund so this guy could get himself a new sled. I looked at this and thought that this is insane. Guys would pony up their hard earned cash for this dude's irresponsibility? If you can afford to own a sled, plus mods, plus gear, plus avy equipment (I hope), plus the truck to get it to the hill, plus the cash to spend a couple days away from home then you sure's hell can afford the money to insure it. In ND you are required to at least have liability on any motor vehicle. I am thankful that the legislators in this state are smart enough to protect the innocent person that may get involved in any mishap with someone else. Ragin, I know that you have a bad deal there but I hope that this post makes you wake up and insure whatever motor vehicle you may have. Full coverage for my sled is $700 a year. It's not a big deal to me since it's a $10,000 sled and sleds are very high risk to insure. Please anyone else out there that is reading this,go out and at least get liability on your toys cause you may end up paying big bucks for an incident that would have possibly only cost you your deductible.

I know you said the next sled will have Insurance...very good on you. Glad no one was hurt. The wife and I are not wealthy ... but we have full coverage on our 04 , 06, and 08. Just short of 500 dollars a year. We cant afford not to be insured. This coverage is good year round, like when the shop burned to the ground and you lose your sleds or the cull down the street steals your sleds...its just the wise thing to doo. Dino

insurance is a fu(k job... all in all.. insurance companies are criminals... health insurance? the whole setup is a scam but everyone needs it. seriously the legal system is the same ****. i said it already... you red repped me for it. i tried to talk about it in private messages and all i could say is good luck. but the legal system isn't going to get you anywhere so whats the point. making him sign **** is going to make him feel less like he wants to make it up to you. an accident caused by him ****s you so you try **** him back... hes gonna definitely **** you too if he can..
