Fox Evols on Pro

Actually .30" shorter than the PRO.

I'm sure you could make some a-arm brackets that woould make up the difference.

This chassis is sensitive to ride height in the front.

Sure some have used the 17.20" IQ shocks... but they would feel even better the right lenght.

Not trying to change the subject but I have a quick question for Mountainhorse or anyone that can provide input. Clearly it is ideal to have the exact shocks made for your model. I have a base model 2011 rmk with the ryde fx shocks so any shock upgrade is going to make a huge difference for me. Unfortunately I do not have enough money to buy new shocks made for my model, but a friend of mine has a set of evol x's from an iq rmk that he will sell me for very cheap. Even though they are not the exact length (as discussed before they are .3 inches shorter than spec for the pro). My question is, even though they are not the exact right length and will not provide absolutely perfect ride height, will the performance improvements be enough to warrant buying them for a cheap price? For the price he is offering them to me I will have a hard time finding stock walker evans for cheaper. I would have to imagine that the performance of the slightly shorter evol x would still beat the performance of the stalk walker evans. Am I correct? I am an aggressive and very capable rider so I could really benefit from some good shocks, I just don't have the money (college student) to get exactly what I want so I am trying to make due with what options I do have. Any comments?

A little over a quarter inch is not going to make that much difference, JMO
Give Andy a call and he may help you out with shortening and a shock rebuild for the fox shocks.

whats your definition of very cheap?

I'd be happy getting a set for "cheap" for the wife's IQ.....if you follow what im saying

Mounting bolts are different sized than IQ, also, metric on Pro's, SAE on IQ.

rj,

I run the IQ evols on my pro. I just ordered the reducer bushings from fox to fit the metric bolts. The shorter length is actually better on the Pro. It helps the tipping point transition. There are a couple companies modifiying the stock walkers to be shorter and I believe the 2013 has been shortened to provide a slightly lower ride height. That little bit lowers the CG which works well on the Pro. I run less air pressure and settings than I did on the IQ.

Exactly. What happens with slightly shorter shocks is that more pressure gets placed on the front track shock so you get more transfer and it becomes easier to unload the skis to initiate countersteering for sidehilling/carving. In fact Tom Dines is using 1/4" shorter Evols for his Doo kits and he helped develop the Evols. The drawback would be for hardpack trails as you'd have less control unless you upped the shock pressure which would make the ride a bit more harsh. Not an issue for most mountain riders tho. Bottom line - shorter is fine, longer... not so much!

Have FUN!

Thanks for the info everyone. I'm glad to hear a few people have been running the iq length shocks on the pro and have been liking them. I figured .3 inches would not be too big of a deal but I figured I better do a little research before pulling the trigger. I am excited to finally get some good shocks underneath me.

mtbroncrider, I will keep you in mind if I end up needing to sell the shocks for any reason but I think I might give them a shot so I got dibs on them for now

I'd give them a shot as long as they were originally for an IQ...

The bushings... easy to bore out to 10mm... those little sukkas are pricey. (do it in a lathe so that the bolt will push through both sides.. accuracy in the drilling)

The 13's seem to have a bit lower ride height on them than the prev years... and the 13's have a bit more control when on edge... so... hmm..

Gman is correct about ski pressure... unfortunately with the std model, you cannot adjust the front-track-shock (FTS) preload... so you will be stuck with the ski pressure you end up with UNLESS you buy an aftermarket limiter strap that is more adjustable (like the timbersled strap)

These are the shocks I've been running BUT with the 37" wide Timbersled front end.

Great shocks... but as I've said above.. the "sweet spot" is a smaller target than outside the sweet-spot.. and with 5 different adjustments on this shock... Plan to have time to understand the adjustments AND the on the snow time to dial it in... not a day your friends want to shred.

Good luck, they are amazing shocks in the right hands!

Thanks for the info Mountain Horse. I am going to have to do some reading so that I understand the ins and outs of adjusting the evols (I've done some research, but not enough). Like I said, I am excited to finally be able to put some good shocks under me so I will definitely have to put in the time to make sure I get them dialed in.

Whoops almost forgot, can anybody tell me what the center to center is on the holz alpha x rear shock for the iq chassis? Are the shock lengths the same as for the pro? I see the alpha x skid will bolt into the 11 pro but not not sure what the shock lengths are.
