flash = detonation?

I have an '03 vertical escape. the temp light has test by it that states flash = deontation. recently the temp light has started to flicker, and its kicking in the limp mode. once the machine warmed up it ran fine last time I had it out. Trying to troubleshoot the problem and thought it might be a loose wire. But the flickering is not consistent when checking the wires for a loose fit. Anyone have any suggestions on troubleshooting? Can the detonation sensor be disabled? if its disconnected it goes into limp mode. I hate to buy a new sensor to find out thats not the problem.

p.s. it is not flashing the trouble codes in the manual, its flickering like its a short.

Thx

Yeah that is detonation if its flickering. The det sensor on the 03 is a single wire and is over $200. In 04 they changed to a different 2 wire sensor and that one is around $40 and they are not interchangable. unless you buy a new CDI box. On the 03 the det sensor has one white wire to the sensor and the green wire is grounded to the motor, the 04 is grounded to the sensor itself. The ground should be on the thermostat housing. Make sure your ground is good or the wire is not broken. I had this come loose on mine and it started flashing until I fixed the ground. The only way to bypass the sensor is to have the CDI box reprogramed and have it shut off. The Det sensor is not a simple resistance like the Temp sensor. The computer looks for a variable single. If it does not see one it kicks into Limp mode. It does the same thing when unpluged. If its not a bad ground then either the senor is bad or you have actual detonation. Make sure you have good gas. Does it go away when you run the sled in reg instead of prem on the key switch. Don't run the sled in prem if you are putting reg gas in it. Good luck.

See below, my temp light came on and limp mode happened when running on hard pack yet I could still put my hand on the motor. I bought below from Rec supply(Canadian SLP dealer) in Saskatoon for $12 to trouble shoot. Problem went away. I will keep with me in the mountains so if temp sensor fails I can make it out.

I run the 03 Escape and the temp sensor on there was a two wire, as above 40$ new.

Hello,

Here is the link for the bypass device.

Thanks, Jim

“Temp sensor is a pretty common failure. You can get the little bypass resistor from SLP and test it. I carry one with me in my coat all the time.”

Hi, I copied above from a post in Snowest do you know what he is referring to and do you have them? Cost?

Thank you,

Chad

"Flickering" sounds like a bad temp sensor. If it is det, It would be a steady evenly spaced "flashing" of the temp light. Usually only at wide opend throttle. The temps sensors are a known problem on all the ves motors. They are cheap. Under $20. Buy one. If they does not fix it, you have a spare and carry it with you. I don't go in the backcountry without it. You don't even have to install the spare to get it out. Just plug it in and tape it, or ziptye it to something. Sure beats trying to tow one up hills it won't climb out of in limp mode.
