Fiability Ski-Doo or Arctic Cat

Ski-doo will have all their bugs worked out for next season and its a great sled to ride. Arctic Cat is changing things up a little and we all know what happens with first year sleds! But they both go like snot!

Where are you located? Maybe someone can recommend a dealer demo or a rental outfit so you can try some different sleds out. We have a few different demo days in CO and Wyoming every year. It's a great way to form your own opinion, and yes it is a good idea to stay away from the first production year of a sled if reliability is important to you.

If your looking for reliability definately go with the cat. However I would recommend trying to get some seat time on each before you buy. I for one will be switching back to cat next year.

Hmmm...

I wouldn't consider AC's mountain lineup "all new" for 09. If they introduced new motors, whole new chassis, skid, etc, then I'd agree that a first year model might be a gamble. However, it's the same tried and true chassis with the same motors that have run well (albeit some had some reflash issues) with the same skid that's been lightened up. With electronic reverse and a sizeable weight loss to the running weight of the sled, Cat is going to be a tough contender for the 2009 model year.

On the other hand, BRP said that they would have the bugs worked out for '08. What the heck happened? I know they must have more failures than any other sled this year from all of the rants we've read on this and other forums. Sure, there are some good ones but what's the chance of getting one that needs lots of warranty work? How many people were burned with that and have decided to not go back until they know the bugs are gone. For me, the chance is too high even if the sled will out perform Brand X when it's running.

I am not loyal to any particular brand but I want something that will perform reliably which leaves me with the other large sled manufacturers. I drive way too friggin' far to ride and I want something that I can feel comfortable taking into the backcountry.

I would go with the Doo.. Should be excellent for 09 2nd year model on the suspension (far superior ride to Cat), and 3rd year on the engine (Far superior power to Cat).

After looking at the offering from Cat for 09, all I have to say is welcome to 2003! Only took 6 years to equal the original REV.

Opps, ya I thought AC was finally changing their chassis what with all the speculation on here and that new 600 race sled. Still a good sled but not as progressive to ride as the XP chassis. So I'd still recommend DOO(09 model!)

Excuse me is not Fiability but reliability about these sled...

We are all just kicking you in the balls a bit. It happens a lot around here.

Anyway, I bet you speak French better than most speak English on this 4M.

It does'nt look like you will get much help here, too many attitudes. My brand bias opinion would be to go with cat. Doo rides better and has a few more horses than cats of the same size but the reliability of the last two years has been lacking in the doo. I have not seen doo fix a problem within a year or two, they seem very slow in rectifying problems with their sleds. They all have good and bad points and all will break down sometime, but the last two years with doo would scare me off. The cat M series is a very good handling sled and has had very good reliability and although it feels a little slugish, the torque band is very wide and it just keeps pulling.

HEY GUYS,
I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE SNOWHAWK GUYS, Do you guys go on web sites in the summer and tell people they should be riding motorcycles instead of 4-wheelers. Can you put a post up with out telling someone that a snowhawk is the best, can't you just stick with the topick. If he wanted to ride a snowhawk the post would of said (witch snowhawk should I buy).

You should do more research before you mislead people

M8 power for 09 has jumped up, unconfirmed 155hp....question is does it keep the torque? If so holy fak look out doo!

M8 suspension dialed for 09, it's going to be rider prefrence here. Cat guys saying best ever bar none (including aftermarket). Guess it depends on what your doing and how well you can set up your sled. My guess is if you set up an M8 SP you'd love it.
If you set up and XP you'd love that too.

I wouldn't go out on a limb and say one was better than the other by any large margin.

Personally I would buy another Cat, I just do not trust Doo.
Also I prefer the 'modablity' of the Cat.

Really it comes down to the tuner imo

!!

I do every winter about 1500 km. 300-400 on trail (in my region the trail are pretty soft) and all the other km are in powder or very very soft snow...

I won't overheating my sled in trail.

I want to know where are the cooler of the M8... and if you know if M8 have some tendency for overheating...

Keeps the thread alive.

And those last two answers are the best so far for the thread topic.

Yes I would try to introduce the quad rider to the bike, with proper rehabilitation, anybody can get off those wheel chairs. :D

M8's don't overheat, if your on hard trail then use scratchers as with any long track sled.

Thanks for the information, now i can decide witch sled i will probably buy...
.....i had both an m-8 and xp this last year, each had its' advantages....xp, power, trail ride, turning, go anywhere confidence...down side, reliability, cold ride, throttle stuck and wrecked sled....m-8, only down in power slightly (noticable on trail and packed snow due to track), in the powder the control was better and the track was also better, reliability superior (no problems)....while i liked some things about both sleds, the cat was my pick
