FAILED first ride.

2500 mi on my 2020 @5psi and 8400 rpm. Checked leak down at start of year, 3 on one and maybe 2.5 on other…………I’m not gonna complain.
Boosted sleds have less aggressive clutch/ crankshaft hammer happening. (Slower response)

This alleviates the crank issues.

Likely you got a good cylinder finish out of the box.

I know of guys still waiting for motors that went into dealers in January and warranty on drivers has not happened yet. Polaris is walking a tightrope with supplies and quality control issues. Sucks cause I like Polaris products in general. The quality on there razors is not where it should be either.

Cylinder finish is key no doubt. IMO cold starts are the hardest on these motors.
But Indy Dan said they were all bad as it was the poor process, not inconsistant workmanship. If he said some will be good and some will be bad due to huge quality control issues, maybe, as I cannot speak to that.

You’re putting words in his mouth. He’s recommending they all have a bit of prevention taken.

Nowhere does he say they will all explode if you don’t or are guaranteed to fail.

Defending the motor as bulletproof comes across plain silly considering the experience of the OP and title of thread.

Sorry for the blanket statements, I am not speaking to all…. I am directing this towards people that always have motor troubles…. ( But trust me there are alot of failed 850’s ) And do not for one minutes except SUPPLY CHAIN DELAY !

( 100% ) - of the entire bean counter staff at Polaris should be fired Tomorrow - They are ruining the company at record speed.

Next they need to stop listening To Chris Burandt about everything under the Hood, ( Sorry Chris not trying to slam you, Just because it’s fast and fun for a few weeks doesn’t mean a 900 is Consumer ready ) The New 900 will most likely suffer more problem then all 650, 850 Patriot motors. ( A lite-weight flywheel is almost as dumb as a roller bearing PTO bearing. )

as For the cylinder finish…. It has gotten much better, but some are terrible so there is a quality control problem the reason the ring locators fail is because the ring is getting to got….. it’s glowing Red Hot causing the anti-rotation pin to fail.

and depending on how you ride there are many many sleds that run great for many years, But if you are a mountain guy that Makes lots of long full throttle pulls early in the motors life the ring life is 15 to 25 hours at best.

These new motors need pre-mix….. and they need to be broke in very gently and after break in they should be re-ringed.

As for the PTO-End Roller bearing design it is a complete design failure.

For all those that have had good luck……Great for you and I hope you get many many miles….. But let it be known Ht e failures have for the most part run Polaris out of motor parts.

And for the over heating statement I made……. Spring is coming and the Short tunnel short heat exchanger sleds are going to be impossible to keep cool on the trail….. and conventional scratchers will not work.

The 900 Will give Polaris the Big Boy company ( Chest Pound ) but my guess is it’s going to be a train wreck.

The Roller Bearing PTO -end is a big mistake.

advise I would give….. Buy a 650, or an 850

Seems strange, Indy Specialty is building a new heavier crankshaft for the 850 and 900 Big Bores, And Polaris went to a lite-weight fly wheel ???? - In the past lite-weight crankshaft, lite-wheels close to 900 cc’s has been a death sentence….. The 900 Needs a heavier flywheel, and it needs a heavier clutch.

I would completely support Polaris on the 900 RMK if it was advertised and sold As-Is -No - Warranty ( Then the whole project makes sense.)….

Then the public would know what they were signing up for.

Another big disadvantage the public has right now is, Most of the failures and whining and crying in on Facebook
not on forums…..

The Factories many others do not like forums because it’s much harder to get bad press removed….

Facebook is Delete street…. Bad content is removed at a rate unfair to the public.

Cats been running short coolers since 2013 with conventional scratchers and no issues, and their tunnel is not much longer than a slash.

I really hope you’re right Vern….. I remember the 2000, 2001 800 RMK chassis in Cooke city rid8ng from the parking lot 10 miles down a snow covered hard packed road…. No way you could keep the sled cool with your gear strapped to the tunnel.

The reported running temps I have heard of the new boost leads me to believe that there is no way to keep it cool
in spring riding conditions traveling for miles on hard packed roads.

Don’t take me wrong people….. Polaris has been my shops life for over 37 years I want to see Polaris be the best
in the industries.

frustrating to watch the new young Guard at Polaris and the bean counters pound the snowmobile division into the ground.

I commend the innovation and forward thinking I just don’t like the fact that the testing is so sub-par

In 2018 you said with the poor quality of the cylinder finish on these motors they would not last. I just turned 4300 kms of hard riding on my 2019 and it has been stellar, the best sled I have ever had. This motor pulls like new still, so I believe your past statements were wrong. How can some be good and some be bad if all are made poorly? I respect your opinion but your predictions did not mirror actual real world experience.
So because your sled made it 4300km all 850's are good? [emoji848]

I’m with you on wanting to see Polaris be a great machine. But lets face it low snow year not many miles really and many issues. R stands for race motor needs service after race we’ve asked for some of this as a consumer. I’ve recently got into running razors in the desert Polaris performance is the best there is in this segment but at a cost of high repairs here also.

( Oh my God if that isn’t exactly what I thought )

On a Side note….. Last year I ordered a new Polaris 4 seater General loaded with all the good stuff ( $40,000 )

I also ordered a new Can Am Defender Limited also loaded ( $40,000 )

between both units I put on about 5000 miles……. Guess which one I will not buy again.

There is no comparison between the two of them….

And I am keeping in mind that I compare the Defender to the Ranger and the General to Commander.

That General will be my last Polaris Side x Side unless a Large Miracle happens

The Ride Command Gage is the only feature that Polaris really has everyone out kicked.

I hope all Polaris people understand - I am doing this to hopefully help Polaris open their eyes to the problems they have.

I am 59 years old i have nothing to gain by saying any of this.

it’s all an Attention getter to the Polaris community….. A wake up call.

I’ve had 4 850 engines put in my ‘19 to date. All locating pin failures.
The last engine only has 80 miles this season. Probably won’t get many more in ‘22.

And this folks is the reason I preach Cylinder finish.

Tony Takes excellent care of his sleds, But when he hits the Snow it’s WFO until the day is Done.

Ring heat is the only thing that can cause ring anti-rotation pins to fail that fast.

trail riding and moderate Mountain riding rarely causes a locator to fail…. Motor is never wide open Long enough.

Keep in mind - The bigger the bore….. the higher the BTU output per cylinder.

this is why you see locator trouble only in 800 and bigger motors 99.9% of the time.

Wait you see the piston failure in the 900 motors…… My guess Polaris is building a new Piston at this at this moment for the 900 hoping to fix the problem Before it gets worse.

My thoughts….. Good luck !

I’ve been riding short coolered cats since 2014, short coolers do the job. The only time there is an issue is rock solid frozen spring mornings, but all the sleds in the group long or short cooler heat up on those days.
