Extend track 600 Mountain Cat 136" to what?

Hi there all I am looking at putting a longer track on my 600 mountain cat. It currently has the stock 136" track and I would like something a little longer.

I was wondering what you all would suggest I am thinking maybe just going to the 144" with rail extensions.

Or would you all suggest something else? Or would you just suggest to leave it as is?

Thank you.

What I did;

156, used it for 8 years, best upgrade I ever did.

You can go to what ever length you want. The only other thing you will have to do is change the chain and gears to lower gear ratio. A 153 or 156 wuold be a good length. Some will say that the engine is too small for this length of track but that is not true. Personally would put this length track on a 500cc and it would do fine. Gearing is the key. What it all comes down to is,, you don't want any more track speed that say 70 miles an hour or so. Now with that said .. if you do more trail riding than off trail riding then gear a little higher, not much though because you will start having clutch and belt heat issues. To check track speed lift the back of the sled off the ground high enough to get the track CLEAR of the ground warm the engine enough to not cold seize it, spray water on the track to lube the hifax and start throttling up make this a graudual increase. After a few pulls run it up wide open to let the clutches shift all the way out and at that time check the mph, provided your speedo works. If it goes over about 70 the way it is you will need to gear down. 19/42 is a good place to start or 19/44.hope this helps.

144 tracks were factory options for the 600 mountaincats so that swap would be really easy-rails and the track and you're done. Stock setups in 151 and even 159 will swap right in too, you just need to change your gearing for the bigger ones.

I have a 600 MC. I first went to a 144" kit worked very well. Last year I got a deal on a 1M chassis and made a 153" it works great. Will be able to use it for several more years.

I would love to make it a 153" but I cannot find anyone locally with a skid to put under it that would take it up to that size.

Anyone have any suggestions? Does the 153" track still have the same pitch or would I need to go to a different sized driver?

Anyone have any go-bys for doing this change?

Thanks again.

if i was to do it i would use a 159 or a 151 from a 8 or 900 mt cat lots of guys are taking good stock tracks off and replacing with power claws. i know thats what i'm doing!

The M-series & kingcat tracks (141, 153, 162) are all 3 pitch tracks-you would need to upgrade your drivers to make any of these tracks work. The older mountaincat tracks (144, 151, 159) will use your current drivers.

Just my opinion, I think a track longer that 151 would make the sled slow to handle & ungainly. I had a 600 136, a 600 144, a 800 144 & 151 before getting a m chassis (both 153 & 162). The old 1m chassis is a solid chassis but it wouldn't turn very sharply in the trees. Putting a longer track wouldn't help in that regard. I personally thought the 600 144 I had was about right for the 600 engine. It also depends where you ride, I think ( just my opinion again ) in the powder you might be helped by a longer than 144 but they require more power then that that engine has. I don't care how low you gear it down it can only put out the power of a 600.

Thanks for the replies I am thinking if I go with extending the 600 I would probably try to do the 144" extension, I am thinking it would set me back in the neighborhood of $500 give or take.

So I am contemplating with the money I would put into the extenstion and selling a 600 that I might look at a 2006 M7 153" track.

I just posted in the M series wondering what is a good offering price for a M7 with around 2100 miles stock with the attack 20 track.

Anyone have any thoughts on that.

Thank you

Old argument, does not hold up, have been running long track sleds since 1968, easy test, take two similar sleds in the powder, longest track will always be faster.

Interesting comparison;
2010 Summit X 154 turn radius = 21' 11"
2010 Polaris Dragon 155 turn radius = 23' 9"
2010 M8 162 turn radius = 19' 4"

I currently have 3 04 600 1M's, one is a 141x2, one is a 144x2.25 and one is a 162x2.5 extreem. All three motors are stock with the exception of a can. In head to head testing with the same rider (my son @ 160lbs) the 162 consistantly out climes the other two on the same hill on the same day. Simple as that.

I am still debating between the extension and getting a more recent sled. I am leaning a little towards doing a 144" extension now ride that for the rest of the season and then buying a more recent sled during the off season.

Try and find a set of rails from a sled of the same year. If you use 151" rails and put a big wheel kit on them you can then buy a 153" track. Prices on the 153 powerclaw are coming down so I would guess that for around a 1,000 $ you could be pretty close to set up with gears and chain along with track, rails. and tunnel ext.

Not sure where you live but there are sled parts yards around. You might try one of them. I think there's one in eastern Wa. at a place called Greenacres no,, not the old tv show.
