ha ha thats funny, i was told to stay away from alchol when i broke my back[paralyzed from the boobs down] its a depressent and dehydrates you.:focus:

No kidding...goooooooood point.
Anyone who's been the reason a woman is pregnant knows.....Women don't need to take depressants during pregnancy. LOL

Probably close the the same as when a women gets pain medication during birth or a c-section?

I opted for the natural method...no pain meds (24 hour labor with first son). And yes..it was

Once a child is born, is it OK to give them a shot or 2 of booze every day? What's the difference?

Ruffy...wth...i cant see the relevance at all between a systematic continuous bombardment over months to a child through the host or direct to the child as having the same scope to an intervention to the host that is imposed when the child is essentually or within minutes of being independant...like what is your logic that your trying to enlighten us with in your response to winterbrew..??..because im at wits end on your arguement..

The point being is that there is a Tom of research that shows a drink now and then does ZERO harm and in many cases is healthy.

About giving the kid a shot, it is not the same. Yes the child will get some alcohol but the mother has to process it first.

LONDON — Hospital authorities say they have treated a 3-year-old child for alcoholism.
The Heart of England NHS Trust that runs three hospitals in central England confirmed Tuesday that a child had been treated by medical staff after being given alcohol regularly. The trust revealed the data in response to a request made under the Freedom of Information Act by a newspaper, which requested data on underage drinking.
The case highlights a new low in Britain's struggle to control a binge-drinking culture which has seen alcohol-related deaths double in the past two decades.
Chris Sorek of the lobby group, Drinkaware, says Tuesday that any alcohol could disrupt a child's development.

yah, that is fine and dandy, but it is just some lobbyiest saying something based on what? no much proof.

The point of this thread wasn't to find out people OPINIONS necessarily, but to find out what facts are there about alcohol and pregnancy. So far, the only thing I have found is that if you drink very heavily (3 or 4 drinks a day, every day) while pregnant, then you have a high chance of a child having FAS. Everything else seems to be shades of gray..

"Shades of gray" doesn't mean it's ok or not going to be harmful.
correct, it doesn't mean that it is going to be harmful either though.. right?

Inconclusive results at low drinking levels would have been a better way for me to state this.

The more I look into things the more it seems that doctors don't really have a clue as to what effects on a baby / fetus things can have. They can't explain why woman change the way they do during a pregnancy except that it is "the hormones"..

I guess the big thing is I thought there was a definitive answer based on research, studies, and patients for something that happens all the time, since the beginning of our race, and will till the human race is no longer in existence.

"Inconclusive" doesn't show if it IS or IS NOT harmful. It doesn't support evidence EITHER WAY. :)

Here's a link with lots of other links: http://alcoholism.about.com/od/preg/Pregnancy_and_Drinking.htm

One thing is clear, if you are pregnant and take a drink -- a glass of wine, a beer or a cocktail -- your unborn child takes the same drink. Whatever you eat or drink while pregnant goes directly through your bloodstream into the placenta.
If you're having a drink, baby is too.

In addition, pregnant women who drink as little as once a day are more likely to give birth to a low birth weight baby (under 5 pounds, 8 ounces) and their babies' are at increased risk of having problems with learning, speech and language, attention span, and hyperactivity later in life. Women who drink alcohol once a week during pregnancy are more likely to have children who have aggressive and delinquent behavior later in life, compared to non-drinkers.

Is it okay to drink when pregnant?
No. There is no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant should refrain from drinking alcohol.16 Several conditions, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders have been linked to alcohol use during pregnancy. Women of child bearing age should also avoid binge drinking to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy and potential exposure of a developing fetus to alcohol.

The info IS out there....

Catwoman, let's see info from a study. None of those are studies.

I am NOT saying go get loaded if you are pregnant. I am simply saying have a drink (singular) will not hurt you or the baby. In many cases it is beneficial because it lowers blood pressure and thins the blood.

I'll try to find a scientific study with numbers to back it up.

Because studies are always correct?? Kind of like Global Warming studies?? And there is nothing in the links I posted?? :face-icon-small-dis

It really doesn't matter to me. I DID the right thing for my children. Others can make their own choices. It's the innocent children I feel for, they don't have a choice.

It's called LOGIC :face-icon-small-win

Alcohol is not good for you....why would it be any different for someone in a belly? There is no disputing this except to brush up on debate skills.
I doubt there are any modern, legitimate controlled studies because it would be unethical to have anyone drink alcohol while pregnant and pose a risk to a child....and why is that?? Because they ALREADY KNOW alcohol is harmful...sheesh!

It's a trick question.

There is no reason to get the girl drunk if she's already preggers.
SOMEBODY BEAT YOU TO IT!!

Show me the study on global warming. There are studies that there is significant proof that it is true. There are also studies that the numbers do not add up.

A SCIENTIFIC study is the only way to show any proof, anything without these numbers is just a theory.

Catwoman: From your March of Dimes link:

A 2008 Danish study found that women who binge drink three or more times during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy had a 56 percent greater risk for stillbirth than women who did not binge drink

BINGE Drinking! Having one drink is not Binge Drinking. Binge Drinking is getting drunk and drinking to the point that you pass out. Big difference between that and having a glass of wine with dinner.

Winter Brew... Alcohol is not bad for you. Alcohol in excess is bad for you. Having 1 drink a day is healthy. It is good for your heart and also increases your "good" cholesterol.

Sugar is not bad for you, having too much sugar is bad for you. Fatty food are not bad for you. You need fat in your diet. Having too much fat in your diet is bad for you. See the trend?

Here is a link to read:

http://parentingsquad.com/yes-you-can-drink-while-pregnant

some highlights:

A study in 2006 by the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology concluded that there was no convincing evidence of adverse effects of prenatal alcohol exposure at low to moderate levels, where moderate was defined as 10.5 units per week (but, the study author Dr Robert Fraser reminds us, not at one sitting, obviously).

"Alcohol is mainly metabolised by the liver, and only what's left will be met by the placenta. The amount that could reach the foetus in a glass of beer or a glass of wine is negligible." -Dr Eric Jauniaux (been studying tranfer through the placenta for over 20 years)

As far as we know, drinking lightly during pregnancy does not have adverse consequences. The systematic studies and meta-analyses we looked at suggest that drinking fewer than three small drinks per week is a safe level of consumption for pregnant women. This result seems robust in that the literature reviews considered hundreds of articles.
- Stats

In the face of all this lack of proof that moderate amounts of alcohol is harmful, I wonder what else pregnant women will be asked to avoid. Women in France are asked not to eat any raw vegetables while pregnant -- no salads for them. Did you know too much sugar during pregnancy is harmful? Can you imagine the day when we're asked to avoid ANY sugar during pregnancy? And pregnant women are exposed to twice the amount of radiation from medical scans as they were a decade ago. The risk of radiation on the fetus is well documented, actually. Yet nobody questions the scanning "procedures" but there'll be hell to pay if a pregnant lady asks for a soy latte at Starbucks.

YOU can think what YOU want, and do what YOU want. If I look for ONLY things to support my point of view, I could find them too. I however, did a search for factual issues of drinking while pregnant.

YOU can say alcohol is good for a person all you want...doesn't make it so. It is beneficial to some (not pregnant).....but not others. I didn't spend 10 years on our local ambulance and not learn anything about this concerning everyone that drinking could affect (besides all of my other training).

Winter Brew is 100% correct....who is going to do a "study" with the potential to be sued because their kid is now messed up because of the Mom drinking?!!

You can argue with yourself now....I KNOW my facts, I've seen results....and I'm done in here.

This is as bad as an addict trying to justify why he/she does drugs.

why is it that just a couple of males are wanting to see the proof...??..it still doesn;t do ya any good if the proof supports your arguement...because you sure aint gonna get pregnant...and the wise female will ignore the so called proof anyway because she knows that the proof is bull...just because something is proven doesn;t make it proven...lol...proven is like a glass half full or half empty...its like a person worrying about getting holes in their socks when they buy them new with a hole..
