Dogs chasing cars?

On my way home from work, I run into this every day. There is a dog that waits for me...and he chases my Jeep. He is so bad that he will run right in front of me, like he wants to get hit! I've called Animal control, and nothing has been done....I really don't want to see this dog hit, and I would just die if I hit him myself........he's getting worse and worse though. Is there anything you can do to get a dog to stop chasing your tires? Anyone have suggestions?

Had that problem when I owned an old chevy pick-up with manual tranny.
When the dog chased, I would turn off the ignition, coast for a little bit while pumping the gas pedal a few times then turn the ignition back on.... BOOM !
LOL, he quit

There isn’t really anything you can do except talk to the owner and tell him about it, who knows, maybe he is blind and doesn't know. My lab would chase cars, he wouldn’t run in front of them but aside them, I think out of boredom. My shock collar has settings of 1-8, when hunting a nick on 3 gets his attention real fast. As he was bolting for this car I hit him with an 8 which sent him to the dirt.......hasn't even given the notion to chase a car since.

Yeah, talk to the owner first. That way you will not have to explain yourself later. If the owner does not do anything, then feel free to experiment.

Be careful with the bear spray idea. Spraying that stuff out the window while moving may result in a unintended second-hand application.

...Not sure if I'd want to go up to the door with a dog that runs loose. But if you do and that doesn't work you talked to the owner. You called animal control and it's documented. I sure wouldn't risk my life by jamming the brakes to have an 18wheeler roll over me from behind. Nor would I swerve to miss him and risk rolling over. Drive is if nothing is there, if you hit him so be it, he's liable. Had a dog around here chasing cars and was reported several times. Dog ran out in front of the neighbor kid riding his rice rocket. Totaled the bike and put him in the hospital and killed the dog (german shepard). In all the kids insurance co went after the guy for intentional negligence as he was warned several times of the danger but failed in his responsiblity to attempt to protect the public from such danger.

Throw water balloons at it?

This is a good idea.

Our dog barks at cars that stop to talk to us when we are out walking. A dog trainer said to throw a water bomb (ziplock baggie) around his feet when he does this. It is so distracting it shuts him up right away. It is worth a try and really has no negative consequences, unless you loose control while throwing!

I've talked to the owner

And she is also looking for any way she can to get him to stop, he's apparently been hit twice already and still does it!
I've heard the water balloons...he comes at me from the passenger side though, not sure how I'm going to dodge a dog, shift and wing balloons out the window...but might be worth a shot!

agreed, 2nd hand spray is nasty, I know.

Zach gets east rep.

if you are in a rural area I used to throw packs of firecrackers out the window at one dog in my area or at the risk of sounding inhumain birdshot in the but. I agree with zach shock collars are the bomb but spendy

Take the water balloon idea one step further. Put Turpentine in it.....dogs hate turpentine.

when he gets next to the car door check him. (works best with an old car);)

10 ga shotgun with buckshot takes care of most of the dogs that run infront of my truck.(usually helps to have a shotgun rider););)

tie a towel to your rim and go slow!!!!!!! dog will bite teh towel and go for a ride. it works but don't go fast unless u want to kill the dog!!!!!

I know a guy that did that with a gunny sack. One of his neighbors had a pretty agressive dog that would chase his car for hundreds of yards until one day the dog followed him all the way down to his house. Since he had several small kids and repeatedly warned the owner (the ownder never did anyting about it) he tied a gunny sack to his wheel and went by the house at about 25 mph. That ended things right there. The owner of the dog never said a word.

Been there. I used to deal with this daily, till I got tired of it, as did all drivers on the road. Owner did nothing, neither did the fuzz so............on day I was driving by, seen em in the ditch, slowed to 40 mph with ole red fury(beater truck), when he got close, opened the door end BANG! Seen him rollin over and over in the ditch. He got up wobbling all over, but no damage. He did stop chasing cars though.
