I want to get some bikes for me and my kids, I grew up on bikes, my last one was a cr500, I have never ridden one of these new four strokes, i have been looking at some mid 2000 450's. I want to stay around $3000- $3500.

I want to get bikes for my 11 year old boy and 8 year old girl, neither of them have ever ridden. My boy is a big kid, I was think a 150 for him and an 80 for her.

Any suggestions from you guys that ride bikes?

If you want a race bike, get a 2006+ CRF 450R.
Trail/hills bike 2006+ CRF450X.

I ride a 2006 CRF450R for the dunes and the track. I have a sportsman for the mountains.

get an 06-08 yzf 450. Aluminum frame makes it one of the lightest bikes ever. The motors were dialed those years. Good long lasting bikes, and can be found for pretty cheap.

as for kids, you cant go wrong with the little honda bikes. xr100 or crf130 or xr200. Great bikes that take the abuse of kids dropping, wrecking them.

Why not pick up an old 500?

I'm gonna lob my vote out for the blue smoke fun machines. And for KTM even though I ride a Yami. Ready to Race for a reason....

I want a trail bike to go play with my kids, the 500 is definitely not a trail bike. It is more of a dune/desert bike. I was seriously thinking about a 250 2 stroker though, they are on ksl pretty cheap!

For you:
Honda CRF 450X (04-07)
Yamaha WR450F (07-09)

Kids:
Any Honda CRF 4 stroke will be bullet proof. Just depends on their feet touching the ground. Another thing to consider for your 8 yr old is whether you want a clutch or auto shift (model pending).

My 8 yr is on a CRF70 which is auto. Next year she will be on her brothers CRF80F with clutch. He will then move to a CRF100F.

Can't go wrong with a 250 smoke. Though I do know guys who would be rather put off to hear you say a 500 is not a woods bike.

Have you considered the stealth known as 1 2 and 5?

For you I'd go with the CRF 450X. I have an 06 CRF 450R and its a way fun bike in the dunes and on the track. And most places you go in the mountains. But there have been a few times up in the hills I kind of wished I had the X. But that's just my opinion. I got my bike last fall for $2600 on KSL. And it still had the original tires :D

For the kids, I started out on a 2001 XR 70 when I was 9. It was a great little bike, took lots of abuse, and no clutch lever so it's easy to learn on. THen I moved to an 03 XR 100 when I was 11. It has a clutch lever but still was an easy bike to ride. Never had a probelm with them, just put gas and go. Can't go wrong with a little red bike :D

Woods and Mountains are not the same:face-icon-small-dis

And yes. A 125 would be a great KIDS bike.:face-icon-small-win

Just tell that to the multi year winner of the Erzburg and other hard enduros....on a 200:face-icon-small-win

Don't forget 125 used to be the bike of choice and guys took those all over. Not to mention there is a certain female out west who rides a 1 2 and 5 in the mountains quiet well. I can't recall her name, but Skadi knows her well.

Or go check the Arizona thread in the WA section of BCR.....I might have had a few beers but I think I saw a 200 in there.

Someday I will show you the light on my "kids" bike and no I will not leave the soft-ties on it as "lift straps" and profess to ride single track and have no issues with said "straps" catching:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-win And did I mention how light it is?

Or the ease of starting

Or how fun it is?

Or that 450 riders are just lazy and don't want to use a clutch:boxing::boxing::boxing::boxing::boxing::boxing::face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-win

LMFAO. I may help pay for your trip out here just to entertain the Forum.

Keep posting:ranger:

Seriously Robb???? You need to make the trip. Food, beer, and the room is on us. I want to be there watching your 1 2 and 5 get up some of the terrain we need to climb. You better be in good shape for climbing and holding your bike at the same time. Gas will be cheap:face-icon-small-win. LOL!

For you the best woods/ mountain bike is a ktm 300 xc-w.I've owned 450s,505s and the 300 is my favorite bike.
For your kids find the size of bike they should ride than buy one size bigger, kids learn fast .

Didn't know u was looken for a bike!! I have been trying to find time to list my 09 YZ450f on ksl. I figure I don't need it if its just gonna sit in my garage!!! Probably 3 tanks of fuel through it max and never been laid down!!!

It's the limited edition white and black:) $3900

Do I have to be on the bike when it makes it up or is ghost riding allowed?

Crap I need to get out on the dirt and ride this year.

One of these years I will show up with the old YZ and play. Unless my wife lets me get an orange bike sometime.

AF canyon, 157 from 4 trail junction up to rock springs... 125 would overheat trying to go up that boulder/shale infested steepness they try and call a trail... The best are the mountain trails in the woods... lots of steep n rocky switchbacks up there...

Keep in mind though that Robb is about your size GP...

I want the KTM 300 with the 6 speed and a recluse clutch... but it will be a few years before that happens.

GP and Ron, can i ride with you guys again someday? :face-icon-small-hap I rode saturday morning for the first time this summer and it was for 3 hours. Got the itch... now i just need to find the time :clock:

Tonight we will be on that shale infested trail. Oh, and Thurs too.
Come join us.:face-icon-small-win

Oh and don't forget about 157 up to Sunset Peak. That is steep and takes dedicated horsepower to make it.

Robb's my size?? Hummmm. I felt like a gorilla on my 125 and even had a riser put on it.

Phatty remember that trail you took Ron and I up a few years ago on my 230? I was a total newbie at the time and I suffered, wait, the bike suffered. :face-icon-small-win Maybe I could have made it if I would have been flying up it in 4th, but there's a lot controversy up AF about going fast on the trails. Some believe you should ride only in 1st and 2nd gear. :face-icon-small-sho
BTW, I hate the word shale. :faint:

Here are our kids on their Honda's. They learned quick and the bikes can take a lot of dropping......

Chris, where are you going to take them to learn? I wish we would have started ours off in the sand but being in the mountains every weekend we just started them on the dirt roads and then the atv trails around. They learn to pick lines quick!

We have to add music to our kid vids because we yell "get your feet on" the a lot of the time. lol

That is what I'd go with. Add a larger tank from Clark and you are set. Dang near bullet proof and cheap to fix/maintain. IMO, the 4s are a PITA, and costly to repair.

I ride a 2003 CR250r, 2.5 gallon tank (rip out a 75 mile day easy). I don't get overheating issues. Love it.

Why start them in the sand? The little bikes won't go in the sand. My boy has begged me to go to the sand dunes but I figured his crf50 wouldn't go anywhere and his ktm senior pro would just need ANOTHER $300 clutch:(

I want a ktm 300 also but after buying some parts for my kids bike they can take that orange MADE IN ITALY box and shove it up their ars!!
