Diesel nears the $5.00 dollar mark and most likely a way of life

It's amazing how low your gas prices are, so it sounds a little strange to hear you complain about them, but as always, it's the change that hurts the most. If you're used to low prices and they suddenly doubles, you don't get that much happier just because the prices are even higher in other places...

I paid .79 cents a US Gallon of diesel back when I was in college (mid-1980s)... $5+ is insane to me.

The thing that makes me mad, is that there is no incentive for big oil to pump their own oil at a rate that will drop the cost overall per barrel. They are spending all this surplus they are making, by drilling and finding oil all over the place, then capping the wells and moving on. Somewhere down the road when their current wells dry up, only then will they move to the new fields to pump there. They hit oil all down through central utah in 2005 but only a few privately owned wells are pumping crude, the big oil companys capped theirs and moved on.

The oil that we have here in Utah is very heavy in parafins ... the wax is worth more for other petroleum products than the actual oil is for refining into fuel.

The other thing is, big companies such as ExxonMobil are still spending a percentage of their profits on new exploration and technology, but they're also buying back as much of their own stock as they possibly can. Eventually the "big five" will become private companies once more.

What that means for the price of oil I don't know, but I am assuming it will ease the price since you won't have "speculators" artificially driving the prices higher.

Sounds like some of us will have a tona untracked powder next season. Its depressing, but I'll give up so much more before sledding or hunting. Think of the money you'll save if you don't buy light weight parts, buy less food and just lose weight this season. Crap I got a good 30 pounds to spare. That's what 3k I'll save on light weight parts, prolly 1k in food costs. I'm good for next season 4k should cover my fuel bill. Better start now if I'm going to drop those 30 pounds.

Not a chance in He!! I'll cut back. I might have to put off my retirement plans until after sled season, but I'll be riding.

Worst case we all just learn to car pool...ok Diesel enclosed trailer pool and split gass.

Back in the day

My 66 pontiac had a 26 gallon tank on it, thought it was a big deal if I could run it low enough to get $10 worth of premium in it, I could never have imagined gas being 10 times what it was then, this is BULL---T !!!!!!!!!!

Kinda makes a new advantage to being a local :-).... lets see store your sleds and drive a hybrid to the hill and ride from the storage....HMMMM lets see you could probably save at 7 dollars a gallon of diesel 140 dollars a trip might cost 20 for the hybrid... hey another thought makes more sense now to buy a second home over here to ride from:-)

There are a couple homes for sale here in downtown! With what they want just for the dirt on the ridge, you could afford to drive a greyhound bus for 5 years back & forth from Seattle to go sledding here!

finally $5.08 in friday harbor, I figure that the snowparks will have alot fewer people this winter if things stay the same or keep going up, snopark permits will have to go up to, there is no way around it!!

I just need more of these!!!!!

it amazes me that we can put men on the moon, clone cells, and support illegal aliens by the thousands, BUT we cannot produce a cheap, powerful alternative fuel for our toys and trucks????

someone is holding out on us BIG TIME!!

were all just waiting on hydrogen fuel cells on our side of the pond or for the air pressure cars to learn the concept of driver safety, and make their way over here

I rode less this year, due to fuel costs.

last year I wouldn't think twice to load up the sled and hit the mountain on a weekday, now I wait for weekends and ride with friends when I can.

I dread the cost of getting the rest of my family envolved, can't leave them sit at home forever while dad has all the fun. I might be forced to make sacrifices and the sled will be on the chopping block. Can't really afford 4 of them + fuel.

1.45 per liter here in the lower mainland BC this morning.

1.45 x 3.785 conversion to US gallon is $5.49 a gallon.

My truck has a 144 L tank which means it is going to cost over $200.00 to fill it up today!

with prices like that my normal five trips north went to just one this year and none next!!!! it use to be 4 to 5 hundred for me and the kid for 3 to 4 days up in whistler, it was over $1000 for just me for four nights during the big dog, I know I could have stayed at the Pemho for about 50 cents but then whats the point of going, good thing the snow is only 20 min. away!!!

I hate the cost of sledding, flying, camping, quadding and everythng else that uses gas. Some of my friends that use to ride got into golfing and bowling because they said riding cost to much. (That's their problem!) Now I see them pay $700.00 for a golf club, $300.00 for a bowling ball, pay $100.00 to golf, fly down to Palm Springs for 3 or 4 days and still whine. We biatch, but we can still ride if we want to. The political systems that gives us the freedom to ride and all the other chit we enjoy, also allows big corps to bend us over. Enjoy it while you can. I think the bending over has just started!

So we are paying 5 bucks now, but Mexican diesel price today Is $2.11 us!!!!! theres is also not the low surfur stuff........ funny they pump there own oil and sell what they dont use, why cant we do that????? to bad they dont have any snow

Just saw a report on nbc or one of the big news shows about 4 days ago. A viewer emailed in asking about gas prices in other countries. Saudi pays something like .46 (yes that is cents) per gallon of gas.

How bad are we taking a beating by the towelheads? The treehuggers need to go pound sand while we drill for oil here - and build refineries.
