xrated, you are getting some BS info from your so called chat with cops. there are steps cops must follow during the tests and investigation (they are a NATIONAL STANDARD, the field sobriety tests that is). There are all kinds of variables yes but the cops must do everything by the book or some jerkoff drunk gets off when they go to court.

Do some research before you start talking about something you don't know much about, this he-said she-said don't do much to get the proper info out.

I didn't say they weren't needed, I just said from my conversations, that the eye test is teh only one you can not throw or fake in any way shape or form. It checks involuntary reactions(your eyes twitch and twitch faster the drunker you are). Yes they may have to do the other tests, but they are not near as accurate as the eye tracking or blowing. Maybe you should have read what I was saying, I didn't say they were not needed, I said they were BS.

I think it's a good idea, they don't have to set up every weekend, an occasional check point would make people think twice before riding. I don't care if you want to ride all pizzed up and kill yourself, but think about the rest of us out there with our family and friends. There are way too many people getting killed in avys and other accidents we don't need drunks out ther too.:beer;

Here in MT the F.W.P. and F.S. govern snowmobiling. They plan on setting up check stations to give sobriety tests. My ? is can they stop you and test you without probable cause. I think they can ticket you just as if you were in your car or boat or cycle. Dino

I would sure hope they can do it just like a car or truck. It's a motor vehicle and whomever is drinking while riding is endangering others. Plain and simple.

The fines and such should be exactly the same IMO.

Check stations can be anything from simple registration checks to sound checks and anything else they feel like. It's a trail, there are rules and their are officers to patrol it. Better just simply mind your P's and Q's.

Well if we are lucky the LAW will soon tell us how many we can have in a group and also if the conditions are ok to ride. And if we are real lucky there will be a state law passed that will make bars have everybody blow before they leave to decide if we can ride or not.This a load of crap people just what we need more law recking a good day.

Dont get me wrong I had a niece killed in a drunk driving accident last year. Alot of bad s*it happens to good people and I feel for anybody who has lost somebody.But I dont think we should start policing everybody for everything.I do not drink in ride there for I dont whant to spend a hour a check station.

I agree drinking and riding is irresponsible and should be treated the same as if you were in your car. Maybe if they started doing something about this there would be less people getting hurt or even worse killed.

99% of east coast riders, ride and drink. For some reason, it seems like that is the only reason they have sleds. to get to the bars and home without having to ride the road in the car. I personally dont think having a couple is a big deal, but im definitly not for getting drunk. I guess if you are in a place with alot of people and lots of trails, they prob. should have check points. If your out in the middle of noware and there arnt any trails to worry about guys ripping into ya, screw it.. let em drink.

Do you want the FS to close the forests' when avy danger is high? That, too, is dangerous, and takes many lives. It is possible to have too much regulation.

Sure is alot of High and Mighty BS in the first 1/2 of this thread!
WTF people.
I would bet most that have typed so rightously here have been over the leagle limit a time or two. For alot of us that is 2 beers. I do not think getting drunk and riding is a good idea, In fact yes it is BAD. But to drink some while out is what it seems 90% or better that I see out there do. ( West coast) :beer;
I for one am out to have fun and not to talk to Johnny law and prove anything one way or the other to him.( or her) Major buz kill if I have nothing at all to drink.
I know... since the breath test is not the best lets have them do trail side Blood test.
"Sir please just pull up your sleeve..... Sir its only a syringe... Sir.. SIR..
OK get in the sled your under arrrest!"
its in all our best interest Right :beer;:beer;:beer;:beer;

Where I am it's an automatic DUI if you have ANY blood alcohol content... It wasnt uncommon a few years ago to trail ride from one bar to another, but not anymore. I don't drink and ride at all anymore. Its way more fun to pound em after the ride anyway...

I was surprised, and quite frankly disgusted, that ALOT of guys were drinking in revy last year! Having done both now, i'd have to say that riding the mountains is far more risky than riding flatland stuff here... I had a hard enough time keeping out of the trees sober, and some dudes had 12 packs on their backs. The mindset i saw up there reminded me of what used to happen here 20 years ago. I got the impression that drinking and riding was sort of frowned upon, but nobody really did anything about it.

I just got a ticket today actually lol... I was standing on the lake at 3pm with five other guys chipping a hut out of the ice, we took a break for a quick beer and got slapped by a sled cop with a 125$ ticket for "drinking in a public place".

Whatcha gonna do...:D

I assume (dangerous to do so) from the .ca in your sig that you are from the great white north. If you got a ticket for drinking on a lake minding your own business, is it true that if you are at a picnic at a park or at the rodeo/fairgrounds or similar you'd get a ticket also? Not trying to be a jerk, just curious.

my 2 cents

i don't support drinking and sledding at all, i wait till back at the house. i know that i've BURIED my sled and the last thing that i want to do is try to dig it out after drinkin a sixer. but, unless its the local sheriff, the FS cops can't do a damn thing about it. they are not true blue cops, we, as the people of the US, have never voted for the FS to have a law enforcement division. many people have fought and won cases against them. besides the FS doesn't have any laws, they are just regulations.

In theory, yeah thats possible. I go to public events in the summer where people have open liquor all over and they don't bother us. It seems to be at their discretion really. The guy today told me that they handed out WAY too many warnings this weekend (presumably to drunken morons acting like idiots and bothering people). No hard feelings on my part, he's just doing his job and it's only 125 bones. But still, we werent driving anything, and i had just cracked the beer as they rode up. Goes to show how tight assed they are around here i guess.

Maybe you should have read what I was saying, I didn't say they were not needed, I said they were BS.

I think they serve for some good stupid criminal videos from the dashboard camera for the police and publics entertainment.:D

In MT., F.S. Only the law enforcement officer will stop you and ask for registration, and or sobriety checks , hes the one with red and blue lights on top and has the authority to do so. F.W.P. Only the game warden has the authority to stop you and ask for tags and check for sobriety And yes they carry weapons. Dino

This thread is kinda mute on a 4m like this imo, if your on SW reading this then your prolly not the average 'joe' bombing down the trail on his old Jag tossing a beer can in the ditch every few miles

Myself, hell I can't drink enough water to keep me properly hydrated during the ride, couldn't even imagine drinking booze. I'd puke and have a giant dehydration headache in a few hours

I guess in case some 'joe' reads this at least they'd know how SW'rs feel about this issue
