Here in MT the F.W.P. and F.S. govern snowmobiling. They plan on setting up check stations to give sobriety tests. My ? is can they stop you and test you without probable cause. I think they can ticket you just as if you were in your car or boat or cycle. Dino

Personally I think this is a GREAT idea.

No different than a road checkpoint. If you arent drinking then you have nothing to worry about. For the people who are drinking and riding I hope they lose their sled, their drivers license and get a big enough fine their kids will be paying it off after they die.

good...anybody operating a sled while impaired by alcohol should be stopped

And yes they can stop you and check, in fact you can even get a DUI on a bicycle!

If you have to drink while sledding just limit it to one or two, save the rest for after the ride while talking about the good times.

I think its an excellent idea. First place they ought to do it is Thompson Pass on a weekend.

I agree! It is a good idea. I get a big enough high when I ride that I don't need alchohol to heighten it. Have a beer, or a sip of baileys or something.. ok. Some think it is needed to pack a dozen...

I usually save it for after the ride, when I can reflect ,B.S. and relax. It tastes so much better then.:):beer;:D:beer;

agree, I usually pack a few beers when ridin, sit and drink one when we have lunch or if were digging sleds out all day. Gettin drunk while riding is dumb

I agree too, however I like to have a couple of beers when I ride and that is enough to get a DWI if stopped. I dont think the check point is cool. Not a bad idea but just another way of the gov watching over me.

I never drink and ride, I always pull safetly off to the side of the trail otherwise you spill it all over yourself LOL.

Most insurance companies will rate it as a major violation. Just as a DUI or driving on a suspended license is a Major violation on your license. Had a guy get an open container on a bicycle have it treated as a major. You are on a public transportation route occupied by others that you can cause harm to and be held liable for due to alcohol consumption. You are thus a higher risk.

I have a C.D.L....if I was to be givein a D.U.I. my license is toast right there and then, and my employer would have a tough time keeping me employed. As for the check points they dont set them up except at poker rides or large group events. Dino

drinkin and riding is for dipsticks....last thing I need is some drunk dude trying to set my broken leg 10 miles from the truck .....after we get back to the truck I always drink half a doz on the way home cuz I'm in the back seat ..

Drinking and riding is a bad choice,something about 150 hp and 500 lbs.Things happen too fast....but after the ride I'm all for some cold frosty adult beverages :beer;:):beer;

I tear up enough stuff while sober, I can't imagine drinking at the same time. Impaired on the hill is stupid IMO.

I was hit head on by a drunk driver near Drummond, WI in 1999. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital, drunk guy died on impact. So I'm all in favor of any check points they want. I don't care about your freedom to get smashed and ride because you have no self control. I want to live to ride another day. If you can't go a day of riding without drinking while doing it, maybe sell the sled and invest in your own personalized bar stool. If your going to drink, stay at home. Let the rest of us ride with some peace of mind.

You dont get out often?

State of Idaho is in Murry nailing us for outta state tags, State of MT is on the MT side nailing us for tags and DUI. And yes we try not to ride to Murry on the weekend, great food and great hosts, we try to patronize during the week. Dino

If your license is so important then dont drink and ride. Its really pretty simple.

If you need to drink then stay home. Riding is dangerous enough without having to worry about people drinking on the trails. Grow up and save the drinks for after.

And if you decide to take a chance I hope you lose your license, job, sled, and all your possesions after you cant afford to pay for them.

Here in the peoples republic of Minnesota, land of 10,000 taxes snowmobiling, even boating, ATV-ing , motor cycling, while impared goes against your drivers license just like DWI in a motor vehicle.

It seems a bit too severe but after some horrendous snowmobile and boating accidents a few years ago, the hand-wringers were pressing for legislation.

Personally I like to have a beer or a 'cocktail', but I can wait 'til I'm done burning gasoline in cylinders before kicking back with an adult beverage.:beer;

we see checkpts all the time riding trails here in ny...Even with those there are still lots of people who didnt care and get smashed, largely because several yrs ago here in ny dui on a sled didnt count towards your driving record so but hopefully its changed...This is the main reason why i hate riding trails far from home later at night never know the drunks...

No jail time.

As long as they don't lock you up. If some drunk killed my Wife I wouldn't want him locked up. Hell, I wouldn't even press charges. I become his best friend. On the last day anyone ever saw him ,people would comment on what best friends we had become. Heck I was even seen taking him out for a ride that last night.......

I can't understand someone not being able to wait until he's not operating a machine to drink. I think DUI drivers should be treated just like someone that sticks a gun out a window and pulls the trigger without even looking. No differant.

I also get pizzed picking up all the damn cans that get tossed all over.

There is a differance between freedom and irresponsibility.
