Cylinder Skirt Broke off.

Lot of people seem to refuse to acknowledge the fact that there are still some issues w/ the Pol engine..

But mine had a very similar issue.
Mag bearing went out, but dealer found hair line fracture on the cylinder skirt when it was tore apart.

FYI, my oil pump was set on the low side it seems..and was turned up by the dealer during warranty work.
Weather thats the root of the cause or not, it can't hurt longevity I figure.

And I'll say it again, since I seem to have to say it in every post so people understand I'm not a Pol hater here to cause drama...
I love the sled, it works great for me, I even like the engine [up until it failed...].

I just don't think these engine issues should go unnoticed/recognized by the public or by Polaris.

I just had a customer sled loose the pto intake skirt and yes he is getting a new motor. Polaris is doing research on any failure to make the sled better in every way.Dealers fill out a page and a half of questions that Polaris is using to look at possible trends in failures.

Another "buddy" story, yes, but the exact same issue happened to a riding aquaintance.lol. Bottom of the skirt broke off and did some damage. 2000 miles though on a 2011. Warranty took care of it, but still cost him some riding time. Too many coincidental failures here, polaris should resolve the issue. But on a percentage basis, will they, or are the numbers too low for them to be concerned?

That really sucks. I went thru 4 of those on my 08 Dragon. My snow checked Pro has a 4yr warranty.

i busted a piston on a stock 2010 suzuki 800. life is short, ride them hard and let warranty fix them (and ride your backup sled while they're fixing it so you don't miss any pow!)

Are all the failures showing up on '11's only?
Or are a few new '12's mixed in as well? I ask because due to crappy conditions my new '12 Assault has about 100 miles or less on it, and not sure how many more it will see before the end of the season, making me mighty nervous going forward..

Nervous about what exactly? A breakdown or part failure on a mountain sled? LOL....that happens only like, every third time you go mountain riding?

My 07 Rev was towed out 1/2 a dozen times....still had lots of fun and went everywhere with it. Sorry to say, but they all CAN have problems and eventually they ALL do. The only 2 sleds I towed out with my Pro last year were an 07 Rev (no big surprize) and a 2010 M8 (gasp). The oldest sleds in our riding group with the most miles on the original motors are an 02 Polaris 800 (original crank, go figure) and an 05 Polaris 900 if you can believe it.

I have a 2011 pro that did the exact same thing at 1200miles..cylinder skirt broke, dropped into the bottom end took out the crank and put a huge hole in the front and back of the case, took out the reeds, the head, and some other good stuff...warranty coverd the new motor....My dealer said this was the third one he had seen and apparantly has been a common issue for the pro around 1500 miles.

Never underestimate the power of a bean counter. 4 million to recall and fix, 2 million in warranty claims. NO brainer. Cold hard fact of business in the world today is that 98% of business make their decesions based on what they can save. Not what is right.

I had my own situation with mother Polaris this year and they were going to go after a dealer that did some warranty work that had nothing to do with mods but since 2 months later the sled was modified, they are trying to go back after the dealer. My dealer even said, "Hey! What the hell are you doing? This guy has spent 70k in 7 years buying your product and your going to go back and bust his balls over a couple hundred dollars?" They informed him, "YES" "We save millions by going back after dealers"

Not stopping me at the moment from riding Polaris or even thinking about a 2013. But once the other's catch up with the Pro design, it will be easier to prove a point to them.

x2, I had the same thing happen. I lost a bunch of downtime due to warranty complications but it was eventually covered. Both the cyl skirt and piston skirt were broken off, I don't know which happened first and took out the other. Intake side of mag piston 1200 miles, 2011 PRO. I lost some riding time, but I still love the sled. Man its fun!

mine had been running like crap this whole year, dealer changed injectors and still was running ****ty.. took it to another dealer who changed all kinds of stuff, took it warm it up and took off, cylinder skirt also broke off, dont have pictures but this must be common

a new motors great, but 47 inches of fresh how often do you get that

ps.. approx 2200 miles on sled

hope they can find a solution, poo does not need this happening again... you would think this would be more frequent when boost is added, or is a harmonic issue

Sounds like we went threw the same thing, I also had some warranty complicatons that set me back a while. Not to mention the sled went down the first hour into our trip to Revelstoke....that really sucked.

A solution to what Freddy? Over 1600 people viewed this thread and a hand full said they had issues.:face-icon-small-con. All the pros around here run good and some get abused ridden very hard all day with no issues. Im sure some will fail but along with Doo and Arctic cat. Its a snowmobile, some just blow up. Have a look in the doo section some etechs lost there cranks maybe they need a solution. Cheers:present:

Yes some just blow up but my 2011 lost two cylinder skirts. 1,000 miles on the first one and 800 on the second one. Asked Polaris way it did it and what they did to fix the problem. They said it must been a bad casting. Down time sucks so I bought a 2012 with a 4 year warranty. No snow here this year so 250 mile and no problems. I love the sled, just hope Polaris can make a reliable motor some day. Same goes with doo and I hope the new motor from AC works too.

I agree. I think my Pro is a great mountain sled, but I just had my motor go down and it is getting fixed right now. I think a lot of it goes back to brand loyalty. Some people just refuse to believe that the product they bought could be inferior in any way. I don't post any problems to "whine" or complain, just to inform. That is why I ride sleds with warranty. This little hobby is expensive enough as it is.
