Cylinder Skirt Broke off.

One of the guys I ride with occasionally lost the engine on his 11 800 pro this weekend. Had about 1000 miles. Broke of the cyl. skirt down into the crank. Took out the crank, cyl., and cases.

He did buy the extended warranty and so far it looks like a new short block.

Makes me nervous each time I ride my new Pro. This is the first polaris I have owned in the last ten years. I really wanted to ride some polaris Iron over the years but heard nothing but engine, fuel injection and crank troubles.

Been thinking about the "FIX" this spring as my warranty will be up by then.

Looks like the same type of problem the the 08 -10 Dragons were having.

Another report from someone "I know" or the "Friend" broke their motor.

Pics? Any more info? Every motor EVER produced has gone down at some point. I'd say the reliability of the Pro Motor has been solid.

Don't believe it if you don't want to. Keep your blinders on buddy. I have no reason to say that it broke if it didn't. You a Polaris dealer or have some reason to defend them. On the pay roll. Lighten up dude.

Yes, it was the Cyl. skirt. Not the piston skirt. The part of the cyl that extends into the crank case broke off.

here is a first hand account for you. I had my CYLINDER skirt break and take out the entire motor two weeks ago. had to have the sled choppered out. the vid is somewhere here in the pro section. my motor had just shy of 2000 miles on it. and those are hard miles as i am not overly nice to my motors. very little trail miles. i had the extended warranty so the only thing i paid for was the 600 helicopter ride, well plus my 50 dollar deductible. which sucked but a hell of a lot better than the $4500 repair bill. plus my dealer had me up and running within a week. would have been faster if the damn insurance inspector wouldn't have dragged *** for two days and not shown up. only one around here that i have heard of loosing a cylinder skirt. i have heard of a few other issues but that is probably to be expected with the number of pros that have been sold. regardless, polaris does still does have some manufacturing issues with their motors but i think it is improving and it decidedly isn't bad enough that i worry about it or keep me from buying one.

clearance

so what is the "fix" or cure for this....all the "fix kits" i have been reading about are just piston kits with proper tolerance correct? is this issue a cyl/case clearance issue or a piston/cyl clearance issue?

So what are you looking for? An answer on how your buddy can make his Polaris more reliable?

I believe you that it happened. I just think its funny how the person whom it happens to doesn't post. It is always "my buddy"

pura vida,,where are you from? There is a motor at Polaris in Billings with a broken cylinder skirt and a story that is exactly the same as yours.

i'm in alaska and the sled has been pretty heavily abused. i always take care of it but i'm am not nice to it while riding.

i had a couple another issues (see other posts for details) and the one i think may have contributed to my failure were the motor plate bolts backing out which was causing the motor to move around and i think causing everything to twist under load. ftx has that motor plate setup that looks really nice but expensive. but after smoking the motor it might help prevent some issues. when i talked with ftx, before the motor let go, one of the big advantages they were really talking about was keeping the motor from twisting. not from twisting in the chassis (although it does that too) but the actual motor twisting. or it was just a casting failure. or a combination of both.

Same exact thing happened to my '08 Dragon. Then I got the replacements which "fixed" all the problems, and none ran as good as the original did.

this why I used the fix kit on my pro. he has a billet steel spacer that is tighter than the cases and supports the bottom of the cylinder, I used it also because with the longer piston it gave more support around the exchaust port.the pro motor has a small roundish port where as the dragons had a wider squarish port which makes more power, mines now more like the dragon,,well mabe a little bigger!!!LOL

lost my 'engine' 2 weeks ago ,pto cyl ,same skirt heck i thought you had a pic of my cyl, took out the piston then pieces punched through the bottom of the case, new engine is in and am picking it up today, think i will ride this year out and 'fix' it before next winter

This for the original poster. How much oil did your sled use? Have you ever adjusted the pump?

for those who have broke a cylinder skirt, did you loose or break any of the engine strap bolts? (not motor mount bolts) after i "fix" my loose and lost bolts on the mag side, when they replaced my motor they found the front pto side bolt had broke the head off. this was after i red loctite and added a lock washer to each bolt. regardless this is something to seriously watch on all the pro motors.

oil use would not be relevant to the cylinder skirt breaking. it either a design flaw in the caster or the cases are twisting and putting pressure on the skirt. but i did turn up my oil pump when the new motor was put in. definitely using more oil now which is not a bad thing.
