Cyclists-are you a pedestrian or a car?

I ride my mountain bikes around town occasionally. I pretty much ride like a drunk indian and do whatever I want....ride on the street, on the sidewalk, jump curbs, ride through boulevards, etc. All at high speeds, disobeying whatever traffic rules may apply.

That said, I'm competent rider and stay out of vehicle's way. It's not a car, so it should stay out of the way of cars whenever possible.

Milehigh.... Is the helmet law in place there at all?

I guess I understand it for kids but I think once you get a little older, should be personal choise.....

I don't know about a bicycle, but a motorcycle there here is no helmet law for those who are 18+

Legally, they are a car in Missoula, but they act like pedestrians...but want road rights too....

I must be a fag too. I must be really gay though because instead of a mountain bike I ride a triathlon bike. I haven't riden my bike for about 8 months but last summer while training for Ironman I was almost hit many many times. I was always obeying the law.

I agree some bicyclist are a$$holes just like some sledders. Coming on here bad mouthing all bicyclists is no different than a greeny bad mouthing all sledders.

Do ALL sledders ride in the wilderness and leave garbage everywhere? No but there are enough to make a bad name for all sledders. Same thing with cyclists.

I have no problem sharing the road with cyclists as long as they aren't morons and are somewhat competant. the one thing that just bugs the piss outa me and i was always taught was ride single file as far to the right as possible.

Definitely not all, like in the opening of the thread I said "Some" cyclists. I like the guys who do keep up with traffic and obey the rules, just don't see a lot of them.

I hate the ones in the road.... sidewalk's there for a reason.

i hate thoughs gay, spandex wearing h omo's! always trying to ride on the white line, then they wonder why they get run over! idiots.

Cyclists that ride in or near the traffic lanes are tree hugging fags that want to make it a point that you see how they are trying to help the world by biking!

Ride on the side walk and let us freedom loving, gas burning, single occupant large truck driving people get to work.

I have met many people that feel the way you do. Before you make judgements on how a Bicyclists should ride, maybe you should give it a Whirl! I commute with my bicycle and it is impossible to maintain 20MPH and be on a sidewalk. I believe a cyclists must obey the rules of the road, but have as much right to the road as you. Hate to see idiot bikers taking the lane when not necessary and not obeying rules of the road, but I will take a lane if my safety in jeapardy.

I do have a mirror on my helmet mainly to avoid you A$$hats that have bigger ego than brains. Always prepared to bail to the side if you need to make your point.

Totally agree... "Get the he!! out of my way!!!"

If they can't ride the speed limit, they need to GET THE *** OFF THE ROAD!

And NO, wearing a yellow jersey doesn't make you Lance Armstrong. Pay your dues. Chop off a nut, bang out Cheryl Crow & the Olsen Twins and then you can ride your yellow jersey on any road you want.

Every Spring this type of thread comes up. I actually find it rather humorous. How many of those complaining have ridden in traffic before? Here in UT, by law you are required to ride on the right hand side of the road, obey traffic laws, turn in the turning lanes ect. Are there some that blow threw stop signs and dont obey the law? Sure there are just like any other group, 90% obey the law & 10% are the dips that dont.

If there is not a shoulder to ride in, or emergancy lane then most cyclist ride on the white line or just to the left of it. Them main reason is for safety, to avoid glass and debris, & to be seen. If the pavement is wet the white paint is as slick as ice.

I have been run off the road several times. I had someone come up behind me one time and & throw a 2 liter bottle of coke on my back. Revenge came sweet during 5:00 traffic as I chased him down. Two punks in the front seat of daddy's suburban. They were pretty brave as they took off down the road, but when I caught up with them they were pretty nervous. They wouldnt pull over so I pulled out the cell phone and called the cops. Later that evening I got two very nervous parents calling me with all sorts of apologies wondering if I was pressing charges.

The gay comments are funny as h*ll. I will take you all on a 100 mile ride up 3 canyon climbs at 10%+ and down the other side at 40-50 mph, you might even hit upper 50's if your lucky. Doing 20-25 mph on the flats. Some one will be crying for their mommies before the ride is over. We start at 6 AM and will be done by noon or 1:00. Your all invited for a little pain & fun......

Maybe you guys can spend a day on the roads with your bikes and then see what tune you will be singing. It almost like motorist want to kill you, but don't worry you will be on bikes soon..... very soon, and then you too can get side swiped by people talking on cell phones and 80 year olds that can't see and people who just plain don't want you off the road. What price will it be? 20 dollars a gallon perhaps....lets see if this happens in 4 years. Just remember that guy on the bike saves your fat *** for another day.

There are way more a$$hole drivers than there are a$$hole cyclists. I mean really 200 lbs for rider and bike vs 2500 pounds for car and driver.

As for keeping up with traffic. Go for a bike ride try and maintain 17 or 18 miles an hour for 1/2 hour.

It takes TONS of riding to be able to maintain 20 if a guy can maintain 25 to keep up with traffic (even though I never see traffic going 25 in a 25 more like 30) stay away from him chances are you piss him off he will put you in a headlock with his legs and pop your head off

That sounds like a bad A$$ ride! Wish I lived closer and would take you up on it. Sounds fun. Working on doing hills right now, and have a Goal to ride the North Cascades here in Washington. Not quite conditioned enough yet, but working at it. My bike commute one way is 32 miles, and the last 15 miles are all hills. This keeps me in ok shape, but need to hit some longer steep grades to really get into shape.

I don't doubt for a second cycling is tough. But let me get this straight. You guys believe it's okay for a cyclist to go 15-20 blocking traffic that generally goes 35? Not only are they congesting the flow of traffic, but they are creating a dangerous situation where motorists have to cross into the oncoming lane to get around.

I never understand why a cyclist will take up half a lane when they can hug the right edge or get this...USE THE BIKE LANE OR SHOULDER and not congest traffic.

Go the speed limit and quit creating dangerous situations. Bottom line.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed Tom

That is the rules, bikes on the road. Though if you are going into oncoming traffic to pass a biker, you probably should just wait till it is clear to overtake the bike. I don't know why people are in such a rush.

For the most part, car/truck drivers are pretty curtious, and yield to bikers even though they might not like it. The people I fear the most when riding my bike are Old and young drivers. Old people don't know how to react, or don't see you, and young drivers are cocky and think it is funny to run you off the road.

Just keep one thing in mind. When you are in a rage because a biker has slowed you down to 15mph, there could be drastic consequences for a bad decision on your part. Kick back in the coushy truck seat, listen to the radio and wait for a safe time to pass.
