Well put them on drag race uphill and 858 finishes dead last most of the times. Throttle response is slow. 9R aint much quicker than 850etec (gen5)
2025etec is different than 2017 850etec. If you look at the parts list among the years, a lot has changed.
Out of the box the 858 clutching and mapping is really sub par. Poo at doo are a lot farther down the road on that.
I was suprised as the snowest podcast that all the riders agreed that the 858 felt stronger then the doo, of course poo’s 850 has always been lacking in power. Maybe the test crew got a good sled, its very possible there are scuds and duds out there being the first year of the cat stroker.

I ride a 9R. My experience with the 858 was very soft throttle low through mid, in fact that really surprised me. It was noticeably weaker than my wife’s Polaris 850 Pro RMK. I’ve never ridden an 850 NA Skidoo to compare, but my understanding is it has a lot more torque than other 850s. I’m sure the 858 I rode just needed some clutching improvements. The motor seemed to have tons of power up top.
In 22 poo made the 850 run a bunch better. I think they are more mid to top so a little deceiving compared to doo. Love the stronger bottom end of the doo. Clutching on my 858 made a substantial difference. Not a fan how it came.
Snowest podcast surprised me also until I changed Clutching. Those were supposed to be stock. I think someone cheated.
Well cat uses 48 srt helix so it sure feels it "pulls strong" but in real life its slow most of the time and feels sluggish on throttle. They should recalibrate the whole clutching to make it run light and revvy on deep conditions.
If I had a 858 cat, I would start with 42 srt helix and maybe 160-260 secondary spring and would work with primary from there to make it run properly.

I agree, we were in Revelstoke mid December and my friend had a 858 154 and I have a doo gen5 NA 850 154 and we dragged raced with the other 3 other Doo gen5 Turbos and the 858 was definitely not the first NA to the top. He definitely complained about the bottom end and throttle response.
More credibility to the shootout talk then there will be with the rumors.
Not so serious but wishlist for 2026 deep snow models
- New spindle to fix front end geometry, 2018 rs spindle is ready just use that
- Proper ski, just copy tmx/gripper/mohawk and be done with it
- Proper ski rubbers
- New 900cc non turbo 170hp+, 8300rpm+
- Lighter hood, better headlights, better storage compartment as stock
- Make a proper tunnel bag like Burandts bag is
- Add 4 piston brake also to deep snow sleds
Wishlist for G6 for the future
- Narrow the body and use 15" track in all models
- Shorter cooler and shorter tunnel overall, get rid of front cooler, its too sensitive to rocks
- Redesing the bulkhead so you can swap lower and upper A-arms without taking the hood off
- Lighten the turbo & components, theres a lot to do here
- New secondary that is not solid shaft to replace QRS
- Simplify everything to make it lighter, cheaper and easier to maintain

I have the Mohawk and Gripper, not sure they are any better. Maybe over the DS4 but not the DS3.
I've never wished for better brakes. Never overheated them or had a problem locking up the track.
Everyone that I know that has swapped to a 15" has regretted it, complained about flotation and switched back to 16" wide track.
The 3" track with Expert pkg already over heats in certain conditions like spring snow or hard icy, even with ice scratchers down.
It would be nice to be able to take the hood off without tools. Use Dzus quarter turn fasteners.
Stock ski is pretty useless, even dangerous when there are layers or crust. I switched to tmx and and day and night difference how the sled works all around.
Its not that much about overheating, but you have to use a lot of force and even still the brake is quite numb. I use brake a lot for sled control on the trees and stock brake just sucks.
I agree that 16" gives good flotation and has its advantages. I swapped to 16" on my 146" turbo this season. But my point is that Doo should renew their philosophy and one thing would be narrow tunnel. Adding to that would be simplification and weight reduction. Make sleds more nimble and rider first thinking.
At the moment its no brainer to go 15" track when you can use 16". But if I had to choose I would take poo style narrow tunnel over advantages of 16" track.
Dont care, I want the machine work for deep snow not the trails. Let them make better scratchers or whatever but I want purpose built sled. They can leave long coolers on SP or some other basic models, but make expert an real expert.
Yes, simplify and lighten the sleds. Less parts, easier maintenance.
So I haven't seen many insights on what we ARE going to get in a week or two..???

Other than Norona and Pahno posting sleds with covers on it out in public it must be not that crazy of a change
Thats a clue that the G5 is a damn good sled.
I hope it's not game changing like their ghost outboard project.
