Contacts?

Hey guys.

I'm wondering how many of you wear glasses while sledding in the backcountry? I tried it once and couldn't do it. They were fogging and extremely uncomfortable. Had to take them off after 20 minutes.

Do any of you wear contacts and do they work well?

Contacts work great. Before I had lasik, I wore contacts while riding. Never had an issue.

I wear contacts when I sled. And I ALWAYS carry a spare set with me in my pack in a safe place. I am blind as a bat and it would be an exciting ride back if my contacts fell out!

See, my eyesight isn't so bad that it effects my ability to ride or see where I'm going. But it does slightly effect my depth perception and how far I can see clearly. It would just be nice to see well while sledding.

I just think contacts would be nice.

Since we're on the topic, how was the laser eye surgery?

Lasik was amazing to say the least. I am now seeing 20/10. The first few weeks after were tough, halo's, dry eyes, but after a month, those issues were gone.

I am forced to wear contacts. Spare set is nice to have with you. I wear one soft in the left eye and a hard gas Permeable in my right. I don't carry a spare right because of the $400 cost of one. I highly recommend you bring eye drops and make it a point to re-wet several times while riding. It really helps out. I keep a small bottle of solution with me as well, one of those sample bottles works well. This way you can always take them out and re-wet/clean if needed.

I've never had a problem with contacts but all my friends have been telling me how great LASIK is. I wish insurance would cover some of the cost.

I'll try contacts this year, I think. Maybe sometime in the future after I'm out of high school I'll look into LAZIK. My eye sight isn't too bad, so.

Wait until you're at least 25 for LASIK. If you have a good eye doctor they'll probably recommend the same.

I went through 4 eye doctors to get one that could fit my contacts properly. I'm a special case.

Lasik strongly recommended! Contacts are a crutch!

I was in the same boat for years (eyesight is a lot worse than yours, three to four inches was my limit). Finally got contacts and holly shat what a difference! I have had my eyes freeze shut a couple times while riding in 55-65 below zero, not fun and nothing would have changed the out come. Finally got Lasik when I was in my late thirties. It was soo cool to be able to see the clock on the wall after coming out from under the laser. Being a welder it was similar to a mild flash burn and I was back to normal and driving the 300 miles home the next day! Reading road signs hundreds of yards before the wife could make them out!

Get yourself contacts as a crutch and get Lasik as soon as you can bag, borrow, or steal the funds! BEST money I ever spent, but then I was near legally blind beforehand.

Hope this helps! Ride on!

I wear contacts...30 day disposables. ONLY option for me. Just keep the eyes from getting dried out and I'm fine.

I HATE wearing glasses under my goggles.

I wear glasses under my goggles, and last season I tried just about every kind of goggle to find what works the best for me. Helmet had a lot to do with it as well.

I started off with a cheapo fly helmet and some scott xi goggles, and I was having a terrible time keeping my glasses from being fogged up.

I tried a set of oakleys - no better. What were better were 609 sinisters, and they fit my glasses just as good as the scott OTG glasses.

The biggest change I noticed was changing that cheap fly helmet (kinetic I think it was) for a klim f4. The extra venting did help A LOT with keeping the glasses from being fogged up under the goggles.

I also got new glasses mid-season last year, and got a new coating called opti-fog on my lenses. The coating is made by crizal, the same company that does the anti reflective coatings. I rub on some of the opti-fog activator before going (which lasts about a week or so), and those glasses were near impossible to get foggy after that.

I am going to try to get some contacts before this season starts, but after getting the opti-fog coating I have no trouble wearing glasses and worrying about them being fogged up, regardless of the helmet and goggles.

Never had a problem with my contacts. Deff agree with what the others said have a extra set available and have eye drops. Sucks driving out blind.:face-icon-small-ton

Chris, I used contacts, got along just fine. I'm not sure of your age, but I did the lasik 'bout 5 years ago and am very satisfied with that decision.

I wear contacts when I ride also. I can't see squat up close with them in, but they save my bacon seeing distance and the terrain. I keep a bottle of ReNu lubricating and rewetting drops inside my jacket.

I wear glasses well riding all the time i tried a few things out what works for me is scott googles and a hjc helmet and really clean your specs befor riding

Hm. I'm surprised how many of you are wearing glasses.

I've never worn anything for my eyesight while sledding or quadding before, but my eyesight is getting gradually worse. So I think it might be a good option to see the terrain a bit better. I have trouble with my depth perception too.

By the way, I'm 16, turning 17 in about a month from now.

I rode for years with glasses under goggles, and just dealt with the fogging up. Most of the time, I would ride without goggles because of this (as the glasses themself didn't fog as bad) and got used to the cold and wind. Now I wear contracts when I ride (and doing water sports in the summer) I have a slight astigmatism in my right eye that my glasses correct, but due to the cost my contacts do not. I have the 30 day disposables, but for riding I specifically wanted the daily disposables. Because I don't wear them every day (relying on my glasses most the time) a month supply last me quite a while. It's nice if you lose one while riding it's not a big deal to open another whereas the monthly ones cost more for each one. I take them out when back at the pickup and just throw them away and put my glasses on. I couldn't imagine riding in my glasses again (but do carry an old set in my bag) but even now catch myself without my goggles on due to the habit. I personally HATE putting my contacts in, and it takes me a while, but it is worth it for a day of hassle free vision.

Daily Dispossables

I wear the daily dispossables and only for sledding. For the $3 a ride how can you go wrong.End of day, dispose and put glasses back on. No more blind runs because of fog. 30 pack= $64 , lost glasses $350
