co-worker has diagnosed with H1N1 and wont go home!

Like it states he missed one day and is back today. Looks like crap and is laying around break room miserable and not productive. He has been asked to go home but wont (money reasons) I for one am staying away from him but at some point company is going to have to buck up and take some responsibility if they dont send him home.

how do you know its swine flu? Doesn't it take at least a week for the test to come back?

but even so, the company should kick him out, or they'll find a whole lot more employees sick.

This guys dept. does not get sick days paid.
Tough, I'm guessing he knows that and would put some money away for extended illnesses.
If not, too bad...Kick his arse out of there.
Get your management to send him home before everybody else gets sick and can't come in.
no sick leave? well just stay away from him then unless your wanting to use your sick leave :)
And everything he touches, and every room he spends any time in, and every other person he comes in contact with...
Some People are DYEING from this folks.
You don't heal from that.

This is just WRONG!! Now the break room isn't safe for anyone else, or anywhere else he's been.

Definitely should be told to get out of there. What's the place going to do when everyone else gets sick?

It's a freakin health risk...get him out of there.

CALL THE COPS, NOBODY LIKES TO DIE!!!!!!!

LOL

I have a co worker who uses all his sick days to play in WoW tournaments. Then he comes into work sicker than a dog and wont stay home cause he has no vacation or sick days left. He likes to stick his hands into the community pretzel bowl... I yell at him about every hour to go sanitize his hands. I bought a couple of those huge hand sanitizer bottles from Sams club to place around our cube farm... some peoples kids...

My wife's a nurse and she was told that even being within 10 feet of anyone with H1N1 can pass the virus to you.....so if you beat him, use at least a 11 foot pole.

I say beat him ! He is a threat to your health be a threat to his. Thats fair !

I'm guessing by your post this guy is pretty low on the totem pole and prob lives paycheck to paycheck. Usually it's my opinion that people live the lifestyle they choose and it's only themselves who put them in that position, but maybe it'd be better (and money ahead) for the company to offer him some kind of sickleave in a situation like this. Either offer him halfpaid time off or something or hold him accountable to make the time up after he comes back.

If he sneezes it can spread anywhere the air is circulating...and yes, people die every year from the flu, even the ordinary seasonal flu. Before you start spreading rumors about how bad it is...do some research. What is the case fatality rate of H1N1 and on the seasonal flu? People are getting bent way too out of shape about H1N1.

The media has taken this football and run with it. I can't see it being that much worse than a bad flu year. About 10 or 11 years ago, I got the flu real bad the week before Xmas and I was sick in bed for 5 days. Couldn't keep anything down and lost close to 25 lbs. I could see how an already unhealthy individual with a weakened immune system, or really young child could die from that. More people than we care to know about die from the flu every year, but we don't get force fed that fact hourly, like we are now.

I think that's partly the issue. Everyone this guy is exposing this stuff to, has the potential to then expose their children or grandchildren, or others who could really be adversely affected (not to mention lost production time when other employees start getting sick).

Last week we had a B-day get together for the Father-in-Law. An Aunt that works at the hospital was told NOT to go by Doctors there because there was a risk that she could potentially infect a couple people who would be there that had heart issues.

Edit: Also, what person would even want to be down like you were? (Not picking on you, just using the example you put forth) Down for that many days, losing that much weight, isn't good for healthy peeps either. I'm sure you felt horrible (as anyone else whose been there has), and why risk putting someone else in that position? I understand money issues, but one shouldn't put themselves above others when it comes to potentially infecting them with something that causes them misery.

I'll weigh in on this. I had H1N1 a few weeks ago, and I was pretty sick, but it wasn't much different than the regular flu. Talking to a guy I know that works in the health department, and through my own experience, it's just the flu. The media is taking this out of proportion. He said that the actual death rate is right on par with the seasonal flu, and that those that should watch out are people with weak immune systems just like someone already mentioned. He said that the only real problem with the H1N1 flu is that it is so contagious, except for old people. They think that older people have an immunity built up from something they had a while back.

So it's really just like a normal flu, but normal flu's aren't fun to go through either. If you can stay away from it, more power to you.

As far as your coworker goes, sickness is something is inevitable. You have to always be prepared for when it might strike. I don't care if you need money, stay home.
