We are making our first trip to Colorado. Leaving Minnesota on March 29th.
We normally like the riding Cooke City, Island Park, Togwotee has to offer.
Where are your favorite places to ride? In the latest Snowest Western Guide To Snowmobiling I have been trying to figure which destination is right for us. I like the 8,000' to 10,000' range. Any higher I have trouble with the air. Or lack of it. We want non smoking, hot tub, restaurant, gas, dealers close by? cabin? and be able to ride from our door. Is it better to get as far away from Denver as possible? Is the end of March, early April to late in the year?:clock:
What to you people think about,
Grand Lake.
Rabbit Ears.
Winter Park.
Grand Mesa.
Keep in mind Denver is at least a 17-18 hour drive. :face-icon-small-sad
Oh, Yeah. What about out of state permits?:face-icon-small-ton

You're going to need to get a at least an hour or two away from denver before you get to the good riding, further the better really to avoid the crowds. That time of year you're just gonna have to chase the snow, it can literally change overnight depending on where the spring storms hit. I would wait til the last possible time before you decide where to book and go. All the places you mentioned are good. Steamboat area( Buff Pass, Rabbit Ears) has alot of lodging options in town and around the steamboat lake area, we like midnight ranch. Grand Mesa has a few good options too, Thunder Mountain Lodge, Alexander Lodge, Grand Mesa lodge, should all have what you want. Down south by Wolf Creek might your best option for that time of year, high avy danger though. All are about 3-4 hours past denver. Good luck

wolf creek will have snow then.awesome riding.southfork is a nice little town to stay 20 minutes away

Most everything up in the mtns will still have plenty of rideable snow. We usually get a couple late deep storms that keep the snow fresh.
I have snow guys coming out from Wi. the 23rd-29th. We are gonna ride it all, The ears, SC, tiger, church park. etc. etc.

Grand Lake has everything on your list!

You can get an 'out of state' permit/sticker from the Polaris Dealer here in town (and probably most large dealers in CO). I think they're about $30 and good for the entire season.

If you had come last year in late March/early April, you would have been VERY dissappointed in the Colorado snow. It just depends on how the storms hit. We just CAN'T have two crappy March's in a row, can we? March is typically Colorado's snowiest month.

Another recommendation for Steamboat Lake Outfitters, now known as Hahns Peak Roadhouse!! Trust me, sledding is awesome around there and you guys can come in from the North and not have to go through Denver:)

Snow is hit and miss that late in the season as others have mentioned!

Oh, and check out vrbo.com for rental properties around SLO, some absolutely amazing places to stay with hot tubs and heated garages for the sleds;)

Go to the Snowies in South Wyoming. It is easier for you to get there and it is great riding with cabins/food available. Saratoga has a free hotspring pool too! If you are dead set on Colorado then Grand Lake has the most amenities available and you can ride right from your room or hotel or cabin. Grand Lake has atleast 7 bars and restaurants, lots of shops for nick nacks and 2 gas stations and 2 grocery stores. The views are spectacular and Grand Lake is the largest natural lake in Colorado. FWIW here is the Grand Lake Trail Groomers website: http://www.grandlaketrailgroomers.com/

Awesome ideas everyone. I like the idea of not going through Denver. What is Rabbit Ears like? We will chase the snow where ever we go. Nothing written in stone yet. :face-icon-small-hap

Rabbit ears is good plenty of snow you can ride to buff pass from there its about 20 miles lots of meadows bowls and hill climbing. It just draws the crowd so allot of people ride it.it will be mostly springlike riding but you wont me disappointed. If you go to Steamboat lake or columbine the riding is more spread out and less people.

North Park Inn, Walden, Co--very snowmobile friendly owners/riders with access to Rabbit Ears/Buffalo Pass, No need to go thru Denver.
