chassis differences..can it be a mountain sled?

looking for a spare sled. im my m series needs a rest:face-icon-small-ton

i can get a 02 1000 cat/151 track low miles for a song/dance.

what chassis does it have??
the same as a king cat??

just trying to see if you can put in a 162 and make it mountain worthy.
this think is heavy!!:face-icon-small-sho

dont know much about the older sleds:face-icon-small-con

The 02 cat is not the quite the same as the King Cat. The differences are the King Cat and 1m chassis has a drop and roll of the chaincase and driveshaft stock from the factory. Also the front A arms are a little different and lighter. The tank and seat are separate and the seat is lighter. There are other differences in the cooling system and rear suspension parts but nothing drastic. You could put a 162 under it and it would probably be a decent mountain sled, but they are heavy. I rode one for a couple years and came home worn out after every ride. However my son and I have built a 3 cylinder 1460 cc sled using two 900 twin engines cut and welded and it is a blast to ride and doesn't feel much heavier than the twin does but it has to be about as heavy as a Thundercat. I can't explain the difference in the way it feels. If you can the get the 1000 cheap enough I'd go for it and see what happens.

the hardest part about putting a 162 on that chassis is you have to notch the track fot the coolers that run under the tunnel and thats nat real hard to do

I had one with a 151 that was a blast to ride.

Toss some narrower A arms on it, lighten it where you can for cheap, put on the long skid & go play.

You'll be tired at the end of the day... guaranteed!! :D

Could you change the coolers to the 1M style? Then you could avoid cutting a different track to fit.

Wouldn't drop brackets be enough to clear the heat exchanger ? Nice sound and power from a thundercat.

Drop brackets can give enough clearence for a 2" but you need to drop and roll the case to get a good track under it. You could drop 20 lbs. by putting a newer cat skid under it.

1000 tcat 151

i have been riding 1000 and 900 tcats since 1995 till 2007 they rock in most conditions, buy the 1000 motor put it in your m sled and go kick your friends *** all over the mountain.

Lucas, Before last season I took my 02 TC from the stock 151 to a 162"x16"x2.3" lug. It is a heavy sled but works great when set up right. Had to lengthen the tunnel ,add rail extensions, replace the upper idler wheels with a size larger wheel and drop the rear suspension rear bolt 1" down (homade drop bracket),and Gear it down some. I did have to notch the track to clear the tunnel coolers. you could run a 2" lug with no notching. This is my second TC -- just love that big tripple:face-icon-small-hap

So you have any detailed pics or any input on making your homemade drop brackets. What did you make them out of? How did you mount them? Things like that.

drop brackets

So you have any detailed pics or any input on making your homemade drop brackets. What did you make them out of? How did you mount them? Things like that.

Tie your rear suspension with a motorcycle tie down and block of wood to hold it fully extended. Unbolt the rear of the suspension raise the rear of the tunnel off of the rear scissor arm to what ever desired height you wish just not too high because this mod will change the A arm geometry some as well. Usually 1 or 2 " is good. Next make a cardboard cut out of a delta or triangle shape. Make it big enough to slide around on the tunnel at the old mounting hole on the tunnel. I put one of the points down over the end of the rear arm bolt hole. Leave yourself enough material around the two mounting holes in this triangle shape. use at least 3 bolts on the piece of the triangle that mates to the tunnel. I used a piece of aluminum 1/4" thick for strength.Use the cardboard cut out to transfer your bolt mounting points to the aluminum drill your holes and mount. Make sure you drill both pieces of aluminum at the same time and install them in the same direction side to side. hope this isn't too complicated..
