Caught in a slide in the snowies on sat!!!

Was this the hill? This is right by Lake Marie. The crapper is just out of the photo to the right. I took this photo this summer after watching a bunch of guys climbing it in mid April. Glad you and your bro made it!

It's just a bit around the "corner" to the left of that tree'd hill. There is a small bowl between that and the dark trees at far left. REMEMBER: LITTLE BITY PINE TREES ON A HILL ARE NOT GOOD!!!!

Congratulations Treekiller

Where did this happen?

I live in Wyoming and my wife and I have ridden the snowy range for years.I first want to say from one rider to another I am glad you are okay. I have never been in a slide or even seen one but it is always in the back of my mind. Could you tell me where approximately you were at and how it happened a little more in depth. Thanks and I am looking at beacons after I send this. Take Care

Yes my friend, that's the hill, only the weird part is that I was in the "safe part" which was to the far left of this pic in the "saddle" near the horizon. It slid right there, not on the steep part to the right of the photo.

Right you are trinitypowder, right you are. It was right there, a hundred yards above the tiny trees that apparently get crushed every year by slides. I'm just glad I wasnt fertilizer.

And to all that read this and want to call me a dummy or stupid or whatever, you're missing the point....I posted this to:

1. Give everyone a heads up. Read my initial post to start this thread and you'll get it. I know I was not respectfull enough and due to my experience, I was over confident enough. My hope is to get other people like me to think again.

2. I don't ride where it slides as a rule...however as I learned, you never know when and where, so be prepared.

Cheers to all. We got some big snow this week so be safe and skiis up!:beer;

PowderPunk, I'm still a little hazy as to where the slide happened. There is a small pass that we like to ride up and over that reconnects with the trail on the other side. It's right by lake marie or "Potty Hill" as we like to call it. It's to the left of that hill and you ride through a set of pine tree's and there is that pass up and over to the other side where you reconnect. Is this the area?

ZR, thats where Im understanding it was also. Crazy stuff. Just goes to show it can happen anywhere. Glad everything came out good.

ZR600cce, you are right. That little pass is right where I was and that's where it slid. About 100 yards from the summit is where it broke loose.

Wow that makes me nervous, we love taking that pass and skipping the trail because it usually gets so beat up around that part of the trail. Gonna have to be extra careful if we make that pass.

Pretty scary, was the crest wind loaded? 300 yards would have put you in the large pines, clear to the road. Don't feel bad, guess I was a dumb azz my first two years going west too. Guess some people are born avalanche geniuses? Glad you made it out. I was told todays wind and cold is the worst locals can remember. That kind of wind will make alot of hills scary. Hope the snow keeps dumping and the wind dies after Christmas.

The spot he's talking about would be a little right of the trail that everyone goes up an over on. There is ,usually, a small half cornice that developes to the right of the pass over trail and about 3/4 of the way up. I've been on that hill alot myself-thank God I have never seen it slide.

so i hate to ask a stupid question but can someone point it out on a map where this happened? if your sitting on lake marie looking at windowmaker where was the slide in relation?
i know a few flatlanders heading out in a week & they are the kind who think they don't need beacons. i'm tired of trying to drill it in their head & no longer ride with them but want to give them a heads up.
Thanks!

You are probably confused because you are thinking of a different hill. The Widowmaker is by the Gap Lakes at the 'top' of the roller coaster.

This slide was on the left side (as you are facing it) of the Lake Marie hill. There is a chute to the very far left that anyone can climb that is a shortcut, this slide was the hill just to the right of that chute, and left of the restroom hill (sh!thouse hill??) that is right on the highway (Trail U on the map)
