Caught in a slide in the snowies on sat!!!

Wow dude, told you guys not to ride at the snowies without a beacon, and especially right now!!!! Glad to hear you're ok!! Make sure you take Duffy's course this year!!!!!

What's wrong with the Walmart Shovel?

Um, I really hope you are kidding...

Mike Duffy puts on a great course, I highly recommend it! If you are riding back country, you NEED the gear! Too expensive? As Mike says in class, you pay a lot more than the gear costs every year for car insurance, and you hope you never need it!

I have a pic of that climb. But it would not let me upload it. Show you could show where it was.

Good thing your ok. That is always climbed, very popular place.

Hope there is not anymore, or anything like there was last year at 7 fools area.....very bad deal :(

Sorry to here about the avy. I took Mike Duffy's avy class in Minneapolis last month and it was the best money I have ever spent on avy saftey. I have ridden out west for 15+ years and have a beacon, probe, shovel and other saftey gear that I have always carried, but after that class I ordered an ABS pack the next day. I know they are expensive, But I figured "what is my life worth". I hope I never have to pull the trigger. It is there if I need it. I also make all my friends that go out west with me either buy beacons or rent them. They all have shovels and probes.

I just bought an ABS pack today, I have rode with a beacon for a few years now but the pack seems like the better way to go...glad your ok!

Glad your ok and thank God that we dont have the first fatality. Great eye opener. If you are under 8-15 feet like you said even a beacon wouldnt get you out in time so please everyone be safe.

Where can a person get an ABS pack from?

Ok heres the scoop. I have a good friend "Big Tom" that owns Big Toms Motor Sports. His # is 651-653-3507. He has all the avalache gear needed, beacons, probes, shovels, ABS packs and regular packs. He will sell this gear at very little over his cost. As he wants people to go home to there friends and family after riding. PLEASE give him a call if your looking for avalanche equipment. Be safe and have a GREAT winter...........:D

good eye opener, we are headed out to centennial on dec 28-jan2. Rode steamboat and big horns for the last 4 years without beacons, i know dumb right, yesterday we all went online and bought beacons and probes, most of us had shovels already

There is no point in anybody riding any of the western areas without beacons. Anybody who says nothing slides in the snowies is an idiot. Any hill can slide at anytime, I am from the midwest and I know that most of these people coming from around here do not have the proper gear and they are the ones who are getting caught in the avys un prepared. They spend thousands upon thousands on their sleds and trailers and trucks but have no clue when it comes to avalanches and gear for that. It is good to see everybody getting educated on the topic to hopefully save a few lives this year.

Very true!!!!!!!!

Thank God you were able to walk away from that. Good idea getting the beacons & gear. We have been riding out west for about 5 years now, numerous places. Do yourself a favor & take the Avy class with Mike Duffy as the instructor. It really makes you understand what to look for before to go into an area. I dont really climb all that much, mostly boondocking, but a slide can happen anywhere & at any time with little or no warning. Just be aware of your surroundings as well as the riders around you. Always leave yourself an "out" in case of a slide. The best thing to do is to avoid them at all. Good luck & be safe out there.

I thank the Lord He was gracious to you and spared your life. From what you described, the conditions, depth of snow, Boulder, AND BEING ABLE TO DIG YOURSELF OUT OF 4 FEET OF SNOW!! God truly did intervene on your behalf.

I have never heard of anyone digging themselves out when they were actually under the snow once the avalanche stopped. It usually sets up like concrete.

I have learned that avalanches do not follow the rules. They happen when and where they happen. They have very long run outs, very short deep run outs, break on steep slopes, break on mild slopes. There are obvious things to look for but after that, they happen when and where and how they happen.

Some how my greatest avalanche tool has been my gut instinct that things just are not right. We look for natural slides on the way in, we test the snow, We even try to create them on small steep hills that we feel certain would not be dangerous even if they slid, with all these measures they can still happen when you least expect them.

Once again, I am glad you are OK and that you have the sense to thank God for your still being with us to ride another day.

Guys, guys, guys
Do you need perspective, look at it this way.

What is your life worth?

Beacons for group use, $300 each
Probes, $50
A good metal shovel $40
Mike Duffy's avy class, $40

Total= $430 of security.

Some people brag about spending more on alcohol then that.

VS.

Having to explain to a widow/children how their loved one died a slow, SCARY death in a strange place, all alone and helpless while just having a great vacation out west.

Think it won't happen. Look around guys, it is happening and WILL bite you sooner than later.

I know there is talk of business here in Laramie having all this equip to rent at a fraction of the cost. There are options.

Get it done.

Yep, I know I was lucky, hence the beacons, shovel, probes on order. Unfortunately I'm traveling on business during Mr. Duffy's next class in Laramie, WY, but that is on the agenda.

www.snowbigdeal.com sold about $400 worth of gear to myself and all my partners after this ordeal.

Yes, and much agreed, by the grace of God I was saved.

For some reason when it all stopped, the snow was heavy, but not like concrete so I got out...lucky, huh?

dumb *** idiot! people like you will ruin our sport! no beacon ,no shovel, no probe, no brains ! on the good side you saved the state 10-20k for not digging your body out of the snow in spring.

WOW...we have ourselves a class act of a guy here!!! The guy almost loses his life doing something that all of us enjoy on this forum and you come on her calling him names:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Boy I sure hope your beacon saves your life one day so you can teach your kids to have better manners than their old man:)

How about JUST SAYING let's all be safe and wear the appropriate gear:D:D:D
