Caught in a slide in the snowies on sat!!!

I've been given a second lease on life! BE CAREFUL GUYS! If I had a camera I would have taken pics to show you, but I didnt have a camera.

I was caught in a 300 yard slide that I set off while sidehilling in an area where YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT IT!!! I wound up 150 yards down the hill on under only 4' of snow on top of a huge boulder. Because of the height of the boulder I was under only 4 feet of snow and was lucky enough to have dug myself out. My riding buddy was 150 yrds up the hill looking for me by my sled. By the grace of God I wound up on that boulder and was able to work myself out only because I was on top of that big rock. All the snow that slid around it was 8-15' deep.

I've been riding for 21 years (got my 1st sled when I was 11) and I have never been involved in a slide and thought it could not happen to me because I was a "safe rider" who thought I knew the mountain and snow. The reason why I'm posting this is for you guys to contemplate some things.

1. Because of my ignorance and over confidence I was not wearing a beacon. I ordered one first thing Monday. If you were like me, order yours. My riding partner (my brother) was an absolute basket case after I got out. Don't do that to your family, suck it up and spend $300 on a good beacon!

2. Don't assume that because it doesnt look that steep, it won't slide. I've ridden over this same snow for years without a problem and last Sat. must have been just right.

3. Just be careful guys. It sounds noble to "die doing something you love" but if I had kicked it this weekend, nothing would have been noble about it. Get a dang beacon and make sure the guys you ride with have one!

glad you are here to talk about it...so have you taken an avy class? did your brother order a beacon as well? one scary feeling huh?

I cannot belive that some people who ride in the mountains STILL ride without beacons!!!:mad::mad::mad:

After last year with all the deaths you would think everybody would wake up.

You were incredibly lucky,4 ft of snow you should not have been able to dig your self out.

To answer a few questions:

1. Yeah, I know that I'm stupid not to have had a beacon. Nor did my brother. It was truly fortuitous that I was able to get out. With my bro in completely the wrong area I would have been SOL if I wasnt able to dig out.

2. The area of the Snowy Range I was in everyone knows. I was at the big hill by the crapper right off the highway right in between Centennial and Ryan Park, WY. The slide wasnt at the big hill directly in front of the crapper, it was on the "small" hill at the far left if you're looking at the the big hill.

3. Yes, my brother and I have beacons on order with shovels and probes.

Lake Marie? That area to the left/south is full of baby pine trees-it slides! Thank God your still here brother!!!

Good to hear your O.K. Please take a Avy course!!!!! Took one over the summer. I'll just say it opened my eyes to a whole new world. Beacon does no good without knowing how to use it. Also basic knowledge in reading the snow pack. After that I could not tell you how many times I was in the wrong place.

glad to hear everyone's ok powderpunk. We were on that hill Friday!! Never used to use beacons like yourself - our entire riding party now uses them as of this year. #300 buck is nothing if you don't come home. Be safe guys---

Beacons are great but like powderpunk says get the shovel and probes to. Have seen places that offer great package deals. Went riding with a guy once who bought a shovel at Wal Mart handed him my BCA and told him to trade me for the day. He looked at me kinda puzzled then I told him if I get buried I want you to have a decent shovel to dig my a** out not that cheap piece of crap. Don't cheap out on gear your buddies life could be depending on it! Glad your O.K. Powder Punk:beer;

thank god you are ok & sorry to hear you had to experience it.

#1 thing to do is TAKE THE AVY CLASS!!!! i just took mike duffy's class & it was the best thing i could ever have done. it is a huge eye opener & well worth the money.
