Camera help

If you're talking about FPS, why would you be talking about anything other than continuous mode? Even on my dslr, if I don't shoot in continuous mode there will be a delay in between shots.

Also, the G specifically DOES have an attachment for external lenses (not what those of us in the slr world would call lenses normally, but they are canon lenses, intended to be used with this camera)

Where the S has a control ring, the G series has a removable ring that the lenses attach to, around the stock lens. (yeah, you can mod it... so it's cool:face-icon-small-win) You press the button that is lower right of the lens & that decorative ring comes off.

With a range of $800 though... you can start looking at a 2-ish year old DSLR & one or two cheap lenses.

a digital rebel with 2 lenses
here's a couple quick examples of a reasonable setup for that kind of $$

a 40D with 1 lens
the D series are more durable, faster FPS, and tend to hold value better.

IF you could get into a 40D with a lens inside your budget, that will blow away anything else for that kind of $$ aside from the fact that an SLR is bigger & won't have video. The DSLR's with video are just the most recent ones & will bring a premium as they shoot phenomenal quality video & are in high demand right now.

Wow that pic looks really good!! what is all those things specifically?(wide angle, fisheye, longer tele, hotshoe), what are these things? id like to start taking pics of snowmobiling then id like to start taking pics of when i play paintball to later on. How many pics can u fit on the stock memory card on a G9? Thanks alot

You can get a 16 or 32gb card for one of those cameras, so I think you'd be around 3000 or 6000 pics respectively? (just a guess, but more than enough!!!)

A wide angle is usually a lens from about 8mm to around 25 (I was shooting at 12 mm in that shot I think, with the flash on a tripod, wirelessly contro9lled by the flash on my camera), normal lenses are 30-60 ish, tele is usually considered 70+ These numbers all change on different size sensors also though. It's complicated, but the size of the sensor (a big factor in quality of photos & why the G & S series cameras are great units) greatly affects how much "reach" the lens has. A fisheye is a lens that gives you a distorted view on purpose as if you were looking out a peephole

The hotshoe is where you would mount a flash, very few Pocket cameras have a hotshoe. This allows you to shoot with a quality flash instead of the unit on the camera. I'm not a studio guy, but here's a simple setup that I did for the ladies ride calendar a while back, the flash that's against the bouncer is wirelessly controlled so you can have light coming from off of the plane of the camera. This kind of ghetto setup can be had for rather cheap, The bouncer is a car sun screen, tripods are cheap, in the snow I normally just use a monopod & shove it into the snow though, a flash (small unit) can be had for just over $100, and a remote can be had for under $50.

With a remote you can do this with a G. I feel that wireless flash is one of the most important things in photography. If you start experimenting with it early you'll get a ton out of it down the road.

btw,

A good forum for learning camera stuff, I've got the same user name over there, feel free to shoot a PM.

When you let off the button because you think you are done taking pictures, and then your friend gets stuck and you want to take some more pictures, then you get the 2 second delay. On a D90, the delay between shots is very very small, like a 1/2 second. 4 times as fast as the S series cameras.

Do you always shoot in continuous mode?

99.9% of the time (I change the speed of the drive depending on what I'm shooting). Weddings, portraits, and any time I'm using strobes, no. (as they wouldn't recover by the time I hit the button again anyhow). I'm not sure where that figure comes from, but as long as you don't have to refocus it's not 2 seconds. I've shot with a g9 & that's just not a correct figure. (well, I'm not sure what the criteria they are using, but it's not something I have run across I should say)

You're going to need a way better camera to catch me stuck for more than 2 seconds....but for you being stuck...andy decent sketch artist can get you in full action..!!:face-icon-small-sho:face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-hap

It's amazing how cheap good cameras have become..almost makes me want to buy one....then I'd have to use it..and well, there's my problem...my camera phone catches images when I need them..and not too bad as compared to just a half dozens years ago....

Thanks alot backcountry. I think what I'm going to do is save up and just buy a new G9. It looks like a camera that would perform very very well for what I would be using it for. Once I get it I'll pm you and we can talk some more about how to mod that lense thing but for now I'm gonna start working so that I can buy one!! Once again, thanks for helping me out. You'll see my pics this coming season so heads up! Haha

Moving target = refocus, right?

Depends on how you're shooting. If you're shooting a moving target, why would you be in anything but continuous? It's not as if it's like my 7 where you can accidentally blow off 3 shots in one quick press!!

The majority of the time I prefocus, then hold 1/2 trigger, then shoot. If I need another shot, I'm only letting off to 1/2 trigger again so I don't have to let the camera guess at what it's focusing on. If you don't do this, you're likely to lose the next shot, as waiting for the camera to refocus will cost you more than I'm willing to give.

If you want to shoot something coming at you, then use servo mode (called live or Af or something in the little cameras) & it will track & you can at least predict how it will continue to focus after the first shot.

Btw, to be honest ruffy, looking at the newer cameras, it sure seems like the G series took a downturn, and the S came a long ways in the last few years. It's a great camera, I just feel like they're a good unit, but limiting in how you can grow with the camera.

Can't say I'm terribly impressed with the 10 or 11 though.

I hear the Leica M9 is a great camera, get one of those!

Good question, I guess I need to remember to put continuous on. I guess I wanted to conserve film. :face-icon-small-dis Though, I think the lag between times if hitting the trigger when on continuous increases by a lot, I think I am going to do some experimenting tonight. After some beers, that way, everything I learn I will forget in the morning. ha ha.

I normally do the half press when I am taking jump pictures, and you are right, it lessens the shutter lag by a lot, but I don't think only letting go half way allows you to take another shot as quickly. hmm.. Might have to try it out tonight.

Agreed, though having the ability to manual adjust things these days seems hard to find in a smaller camera.

I like this one too.. Panasonic FZ100

The stats look amazing,

Stockholm, Sweden (July 7, 2010) Panasonic, is pleased to introduce new DMC-FZ100, top-of-the-line of LUMIX popular FZ series that packs a powerful optical zoom and creative options including manual operation, adding full HD movie recording capability. The newly developed LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens in the DMC-FZ100 extends its optical zoom range from 27mm to 25mm at wide end and the zoom power from 18x to 24x to be even more versatile compared with the DMC-FZ35*1.

Also the newly developed 14.1-megapixel MOS sensor lets the FZ100 record high quality 1920x1080 full HD movie as smooth as 50i (PAL). Together with a host of options, the unlimited expression of not only photo but also of movie is now easily available with FZ100. The high speed MOS sensor realizes the industry’s fastest level of burst shooting in 14.1-megapixel full resolution at 11 fps with mechanical shutter and even 60 fps in 3.5-megapixel recording mode*2. It also enables the camera to record high speed movie at 220 fps in QVGA size, to capture the motion of a subject the naked eye cannot see.

The zoom range and the burst mode are amazing, along with the movie recording ability. So far though, the quality looks like arse. Typical of a camera that I like though.

On a G or an slr it does anyhow, it just doesn't turn the AF back on after the shot. if you're doing that & you accidentally let off all the way, it's VERY noticeably different.

There are a few like the lumix that are pretty impressive, but to me if it won't fit in my pocket while I'm riding I might as well go SLR.

the Casio Exilim EX-Z90 works good for me. don't know how much it costs though. takes good pictures and hd video.
