California burning, ****!ng hypocrits!

Amazingly there hasn't been any big fires in the Rockies this summer. With all of the beetle kill, when the Rockies burn, they are really going to burn.
On my drive north through WY, UT, ID, and MT all I could think was "The fire that hits this forest is going to be frightening."

There are miles and miles of forrest along I-15 that are bright red beetle kill and grey widowmakers.

Well, I gave information based on education and limited experience.

You are taking my statement out of context. If you follow the conversation you will see that I am stating that the YNP policy should have been the policy used by the FS. I can respect your experience with beetles. I only researched them a small amount. The bulk of my research was on forest fire history and policy. I did not have much experience with your pheremone capsules(which I never gave a name for, just what they looked like, and I did misinform, sorry). Marcuso, informed me that they were atractants, not poison. If you read closely you can see that I even asked him a question about their use. I accepted that I was wrong, and tried to gain some information on the issue. And I am not going to follow your footsteps into foretstry, so I guess the forest can breathe easy. So, I apologize for my short fuse, I see how my statement on policy was misconstrued. So if you wouldn't mind, lets keep it civil. If you were respectful to me you would have gotten the same in return.

Hmmmm, if I wanted to be uncivil I could have put hate mail and a red apple in your box similar to the one you sent.

Hate mail, haha! Guess you should have just read my posts better and been respectful right off the bat. Since you didn't you got what was comin to ya.

The one fire by Mount Wilson has cost CALFIRE 106 million.

That does not include, homes, livestock , recreational use lost.

Also, they don't know what it will cost the City, Couties, Federal and other agencies.

School will open tomorrow.

Fire is 22% contained and still threatens many neighborhoods.

And when it rains here you are gonna hear about people, cars, bridges, homes getting washed away.

That is a good point.
Let nature takes it natural cource sounds nice and all, but as has been seen (such as Yellowstone) it isn't the best way to actually manage a forest.
that's the problem with "green" policies concerning forest/land management.
Enviro's (and ignorant people) love the look of a "wild" forest. They like to think that is the way a forest is supposed to look without man's interference.
They would be correct, that is the way a forest looks without man's interference, it is also the way to destroy a forest.
If fire doesn't kill the forest, overgrowth will choke it out.

A well managed forest system includes cutting timber, clearing underbrush, pest control (chemical and fire), prescribed burns and road access.
Unfortunetly, the forest service has become afraid of the enviro movement because they sue at the drop of a hat. So they don't do what is really needed to control fires and pestilence.
It's too bad really.

I'd say that depends on your defintion of "best"...sure from a logging and money based view letting forests and fires run the course isn't best....but from a 100 percent natural view it is best.....I'd say the best lies somewhere in the middle.

As for Cali, well that place is ripe for fires....long moist seasons for regrowth followed by long dry windy seasons. Equals burning and burning the next year.

The whole point of the forest service is to maintain the forest for long term growth and public enjoyment. Too bad they can't do that anymore.
You can't have a let it be and mother nature will take care of it attitude like a lot of enviro's do because it leads to massive out of control fires and situations like we see in western colorado with beatle kill.

On the other hand you can't return to the logging practices of the 50's and 60's. Where they would simply come in and clear cut 500 acres and call it a day.

You need to manage the forests for long term health and viability, which the forest service is SUPPOSED to do. Selective cutting and thinning operations along with an agressive pest control program would cure most of the problems with the forests and natural areas.

As for california's fire problem, either allow for the cutting of fire break and control zones so this kind of fire can't break out or stop building houses in the fire zone and don't worry about it.
It's not a firefighters job to put his life on the line to protect your home because someone wants to live in a fire zone.

Now is the time for people who are advocates for the Forest , our land to be multiple use areas to SHOW the COST, EXPENSE, POLUTION AND DAMAGE A WILDERNESS FIRE CAUSES.

And how does it help us? How is the world a better place?

Things like logging, ranching, mining, off road 4x4 , ATV, boating , snowmobiles all can use the forest and pay to do so before nature burns it away.

USE IT OR LOOSE IT !!!

I disagree about "naturalist" saying fires are natural. Here in Los Angeles they always try to find a "human" cause to the fire. If they can't find a direct human reason they blame the human effect of "Global Warming".

Now is the time to show how a "wilderness" left alone and unchecked will destroy itself by fire .

Educate the people and inform them how much a wilderness will really cost.
