Building a cabin in the alpine

Okay guys, it has been a dream for me to at some point have a cabin in the mountains that I can snowmobile right from the door all winter long. Here is the thing, though, I want the cabin to be somewhere in the alpine!

Now, I am wondering if any of you guys here know anywhere in the U.S. or Canada that you can privately own land in the alpine, or close to it. Above pass level, generally. I have heard about an Area 90 or something in the Washington Cascades, which is pretty high up and near an alpine lake, that is privately owned by some guy. So, it must be possible, right?

Anyways, all information you guys may be able to provide would be very helpful.

What you want to look for is what is called a patented mining claim. I have looked into this a little myself. I was told you can build, drill wells, septic. there are usually some type of restictions and access would be tough. no power. it would be costly for sure, but would be cool!

You may want to look into "Trap Line" rights. I've heard of guys who have trap lines in a designated areas being allowed to have title to a private cabin within that area. Of course it's not likely you want to start a trap line but there may be someone out there willing to sell or share the rights to one. Trap lines are generally in remote alpine areas and perhaps there's a trapper out there who'd love to have you build a place for him to warm up or spend the night.

A lot of us in the Washington Cascades have cabins we can ride out of. Not high enough to be "alpine" terrain, but I can do it pretty much Dec. 1 well into March most years.

Where do you want to be located? A popular area in the WA Cascades is around the town of Cle Elum. Two large developments have Approx. 400 lots each, many lots are snowmobile access only.
